    Energy-efficient acceleration of MPEG-4 compression tools

    We propose novel hardware accelerator architectures for the most computationally demanding algorithms of the MPEG-4 video compression standard-motion estimation, binary motion estimation (for shape coding), and the forward/inverse discrete cosine transforms (incorporating shape adaptive modes). These accelerators have been designed using general low-energy design philosophies at the algorithmic/architectural abstraction levels. The themes of these philosophies are avoiding waste and trading area/performance for power and energy gains. Each core has been synthesised targeting TSMC 0.09 μm TCBN90LP technology, and the experimental results presented in this paper show that the proposed cores improve upon the prior art

    Efficient Architecture of Variable Size HEVC 2D-DCT for FPGA Platforms

    This study presents a design of two-dimensional (2D) discrete cosine transform (DCT) hardware architecture dedicated for High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) in field programmable gate array (FPGA) platforms. The proposed methodology efficiently proceeds 2D-DCT computation to fit internal components and characteristics of FPGA resources. A four-stage circuit architecture is developed to implement the proposed methodology. This architecture supports variable size of DCT computation, including 4×4, 8×8, 16×16, and 32×32. The proposed architecture has been implemented in System Verilog and synthesized in various FPGA platforms. Compared with existing related works in literature, this proposed architecture demonstrates significant advantages in hardware cost and performance improvement. The proposed architecture is able to sustain 4K@30fps ultra high definition (UHD) TV real-time encoding applications with a reduction of 31-64% in hardware cost

    HEVC 2D-DCT architectures comparison for FPGA and ASIC implementations

    This paper compares ASIC and FPGA implementations of two commonly used architectures for 2-dimensional discrete cosine transform (DCT), the parallel and folded architectures. The DCT has been designed for sizes 4x4, 8x8, and 16x16, and implemented on Silterra 180nm ASIC and Xilinx Kintex Ultrascale FPGA. The objective is to determine suitable low energy architectures to be used as their characteristics greatly differ in terms of cells usage, placement and routing methods on these platforms. The parallel and folded DCT architectures for all three sizes have been designed using Verilog HDL, including the basic serializer-deserializer input and output. Results show that for large size transform of 16x16, ASIC parallel architecture results in roughly 30% less energy compared to folded architecture. As for FPGAs, folded architecture results in roughly 34% less energy compared to parallel architecture. In terms of overall energy consumption between 180nm ASIC and Xilinx Ultrascale, ASIC implementation results in about 58% less energy compared to the FPGA

    Design and FPGA Implementation of CORDIC-based 8-point 1D DCT Processor

    CORDIC or CO-ordinate Rotation DIgital Computer is a fast, simple, efficient and powerful algorithm used for diverse Digital Signal Processing applications. Primarily developed for real-time airborne computations, it uses a unique computing technique which is especially suitable for solving the trigonometric relationships involved in plane co-ordinate rotation and conversion from rectangular to polar form. It comprises a special serial arithmetic unit having three shift registers, three adders/subtractors, Look-Up table and special interconnections. Using a prescribed sequence of conditional additions or subtractions the CORDIC arithmetic unit can be controlled to solve either of the following equations: Y’=K (Ycos λ+ Xsin λ) X’=K (Xcos λ - Ysin λ); where K is a constant In this project: • A CORDIC-based processor for sine/cosine calculation was designed using VHDL programming in Xilinx ISE 10.1. The CORDIC module was tested for its functionality and correctness by test-bench analysis. Subsequently, FPGA implementation of the CORDIC core followed by ChipScopePro analysis of the output logic waveforms was performed. • Using this CORDIC core a DCT processor was designed to calculate the 8-point 1D DCT. The functionality and operational correctness of this processor was tested, first on the test-bench and then via ChipScopePro analysis, post FPGA implementation. The output obtained in both the cases was compared with the actual values to test for consistency and the percentage of accuracy was established. Power consumption and FPGA resource utilization were observed. The results obtained were discussed

    Energy efficient hardware acceleration of multimedia processing tools

    The world of mobile devices is experiencing an ongoing trend of feature enhancement and generalpurpose multimedia platform convergence. This trend poses many grand challenges, the most pressing being their limited battery life as a consequence of delivering computationally demanding features. The envisaged mobile application features can be considered to be accelerated by a set of underpinning hardware blocks Based on the survey that this thesis presents on modem video compression standards and their associated enabling technologies, it is concluded that tight energy and throughput constraints can still be effectively tackled at algorithmic level in order to design re-usable optimised hardware acceleration cores. To prove these conclusions, the work m this thesis is focused on two of the basic enabling technologies that support mobile video applications, namely the Shape Adaptive Discrete Cosine Transform (SA-DCT) and its inverse, the SA-IDCT. The hardware architectures presented in this work have been designed with energy efficiency in mind. This goal is achieved by employing high level techniques such as redundant computation elimination, parallelism and low switching computation structures. Both architectures compare favourably against the relevant pnor art in the literature. The SA-DCT/IDCT technologies are instances of a more general computation - namely, both are Constant Matrix Multiplication (CMM) operations. Thus, this thesis also proposes an algorithm for the efficient hardware design of any general CMM-based enabling technology. The proposed algorithm leverages the effective solution search capability of genetic programming. A bonus feature of the proposed modelling approach is that it is further amenable to hardware acceleration. Another bonus feature is an early exit mechanism that achieves large search space reductions .Results show an improvement on state of the art algorithms with future potential for even greater savings

    Image Processing using Approximate Data-path Units

    abstract: In this work, we present approximate adders and multipliers to reduce data-path complexity of specialized hardware for various image processing systems. These approximate circuits have a lower area, latency and power consumption compared to their accurate counterparts and produce fairly accurate results. We build upon the work on approximate adders and multipliers presented in [23] and [24]. First, we show how choice of algorithm and parallel adder design can be used to implement 2D Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) algorithm with good performance but low area. Our implementation of the 2D DCT has comparable PSNR performance with respect to the algorithm presented in [23] with ~35-50% reduction in area. Next, we use the approximate 2x2 multiplier presented in [24] to implement parallel approximate multipliers. We demonstrate that if some of the 2x2 multipliers in the design of the parallel multiplier are accurate, the accuracy of the multiplier improves significantly, especially when two large numbers are multiplied. We choose Gaussian FIR Filter and Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) algorithms to illustrate the efficacy of our proposed approximate multiplier. We show that application of the proposed approximate multiplier improves the PSNR performance of 32x32 FFT implementation by 4.7 dB compared to the implementation using the approximate multiplier described in [24]. We also implement a state-of-the-art image enlargement algorithm, namely Segment Adaptive Gradient Angle (SAGA) [29], in hardware. The algorithm is mapped to pipelined hardware blocks and we synthesized the design using 90 nm technology. We show that a 64x64 image can be processed in 496.48 µs when clocked at 100 MHz. The average PSNR performance of our implementation using accurate parallel adders and multipliers is 31.33 dB and that using approximate parallel adders and multipliers is 30.86 dB, when evaluated against the original image. The PSNR performance of both designs is comparable to the performance of the double precision floating point MATLAB implementation of the algorithm.Dissertation/ThesisM.S. Computer Science 201
