    Optimization approaches for exploiting the load flexibility of electric heating devices in smart grids

    Energy systems all over the world are undergoing a fundamental transition to tackle climate change and other environmental challenges. The share of electricity generated by renewable energy sources has been steadily increasing. In order to cope with the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources, like photovoltaic systems and wind turbines, the electrical demand has to be adjusted to their power generation. To this end, flexible electrical loads are necessary. Moreover, optimization approaches and advanced information and communication technology can help to transform the traditional electricity grid into a smart grid. To shift the electricity consumption in time, electric heating devices, such as heat pumps or electric water heaters, provide significant flexibility. In order to exploit this flexibility, optimization approaches for controlling flexible devices are essential. Most studies in the literature use centralized optimization or uncoordinated decentralized optimization. Centralized optimization has crucial drawbacks regarding computational complexity, privacy, and robustness, but uncoordinated decentralized optimization leads to suboptimal results. In this thesis, coordinated decentralized and hybrid optimization approaches with low computational requirements are developed for exploiting the flexibility of electric heating devices. An essential feature of all developed methods is that they preserve the privacy of the residents. This cumulative thesis comprises four papers that introduce different types of optimization approaches. In Paper A, rule-based heuristic control algorithms for modulating electric heating devices are developed that minimize the heating costs of a residential area. Moreover, control algorithms for minimizing surplus energy that otherwise could be curtailed are introduced. They increase the self-consumption rate of locally generated electricity from photovoltaics. The heuristic control algorithms use a privacy-preserving control and communication architecture that combines centralized and decentralized control approaches. Compared to a conventional control strategy, the results of simulations show cost reductions of between 4.1% and 13.3% and reductions of between 38.3% and 52.6% regarding the surplus energy. Paper B introduces two novel coordinating decentralized optimization approaches for scheduling-based optimization. A comparison with different decentralized optimization approaches from the literature shows that the developed methods, on average, lead to 10% less surplus energy. Further, an optimization procedure is defined that generates a diverse solution pool for the problem of maximizing the self-consumption rate of locally generated renewable energy. This solution pool is needed for the coordination mechanisms of several decentralized optimization approaches. Combining the decentralized optimization approaches with the defined procedure to generate diverse solution pools, on average, leads to 100 kWh (16.5%) less surplus energy per day for a simulated residential area with 90 buildings. In Paper C, another decentralized optimization approach that aims to minimize surplus energy and reduce the peak load in a local grid is developed. Moreover, two methods that distribute a central wind power profile to the different buildings of a residential area are introduced. Compared to the approaches from the literature, the novel decentralized optimization approach leads to improvements of between 0.8% and 13.3% regarding the surplus energy and the peak load. Paper D introduces uncertainty handling control algorithms for modulating electricheating devices. The algorithms can help centralized and decentralized scheduling-based optimization approaches to react to erroneous predictions of demand and generation. The analysis shows that the developed methods avoid violations of the residents\u27 comfort limits and increase the self-consumption rate of electricity generated by photovoltaic systems. All introduced optimization approaches yield a good trade-off between runtime and the quality of the results. Further, they respect the privacy of residents, lead to better utilization of renewable energy, and stabilize the grid. Hence, the developed optimization approaches can help future energy systems to cope with the high share of intermittent renewable energy sources

    Semantic discovery and reuse of business process patterns

    Patterns currently play an important role in modern information systems (IS) development and their use has mainly been restricted to the design and implementation phases of the development lifecycle. Given the increasing significance of business modelling in IS development, patterns have the potential of providing a viable solution for promoting reusability of recurrent generalized models in the very early stages of development. As a statement of research-in-progress this paper focuses on business process patterns and proposes an initial methodological framework for the discovery and reuse of business process patterns within the IS development lifecycle. The framework borrows ideas from the domain engineering literature and proposes the use of semantics to drive both the discovery of patterns as well as their reuse

    Factors of effectiveness in Kentucky nonprofit social welfare organizations.

    This dissertation is an exploratory, mixed methods study using grounded perspective to examine how stakeholders (including consumers, administrators, and practitioners) in social welfare organizations perceive effectiveness in the nonprofit social welfare sector. Focus groups were held in eight regions constituting the Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) in Kentucky. A total of 25 people participated in the study. A theoretical framework of nonprofit social welfare organizational effectiveness emerged from the data indicating that the five most significant factors identified by stakeholders as constituting effectiveness in the nonprofit social welfare sector in Kentucky were (a) client services, (b) organizational structure © workplace environment, (d) staff efficiency, and (e) organizational funding. Thirty-five statements emerged under these five categories highlighting the activities that are considered most important to an effective non-profit social welfare organization in Kentucky. The sub-categories culminated into a grant application and an evaluation tool for use by the philanthropic group to judge if an organization is effective and deserves to be funded. Chapter I presents the research question and purpose of the study as well as an overview of the theoretical perspectives and value foundations that have motivated the charitable movement in the United States. Chapter I provides an overview of how these perspectives and foundations are tied to the concept of nonprofit social welfare organizational effectiveness. Chapter II, a review of the relevant literature, presents what has been developed in the way of conceptualizing and measuring nonprofit social welfare organizational effectiveness. Chapter III describes the methodology incorporated in this study. Chapter IV details the results as well as the emerging framework of how stakeholders in nonprofit social welfare organizations in Kentucky view organizational effectiveness. Chapter V provides overarching implications of the research, strengths and limitations, and implications for future studies

    Integration, control and optimization of the solar photovoltaic-battery system in microgrids

    This document composes the work realised and the research results developed within the scope of electric energy storage at the Renewable Energy Chair of the University of Évora. The current legal and technological framework of electrochemical energy storage technologies is reported, and its framework is demonstrated in the Portuguese and European contexts. Next, the experimental microgrid that comprises several electric energy storage technologies is described. The lithium-ion and vanadium redox flow technologies were tested and characterized for later validation of the electrical models that describe their performance. A state-of-the-art review allowed the experimentation of energy management strategies that fit the technologies studied, allowing smarter management in residential and services sectors. In this thesis, management algorithms, battery models, and an indication of technical, economic and energy parameters were combined in a tool to study the simulation of the operation of these technologies, allowing to define different operating objectives, fine-tune parameters and even join the operation of different technologies. This work was accompanied by national and international projects, attempting to respond to existing problems in the operation of real systems and gaps identified in the design phase, such as a robust dimensioning tool, with the integration of different battery managing methods; Integração, controlo e otimização do sistema solar fotovoltaico-bateria em microrredes Resumo: Este documento compõe o trabalho realizado e respetivos resultados da investigação desenvolvida no âmbito do armazenamento de energia elétrica na Cátedra Energias Renováveis da Universidade de Évora. Os atuais enquadramentos legais e tecnológicos das tecnologias eletroquímicas de armazenamento de energia são relatados, nos contextos português e europeu. Seguidamente, uma microrrede experimental que inclui diversas tecnologias de armazenamento de energia elétrica é descrita. As tecnologias de fluxo redox de vanádio e de iões de lítio foram objeto de ensaio e caracterização, para posterior validação dos correspondentes modelos que descrevem a sua performance elétrica. A revisão do estado da arte permitiu a experimentação de estratégias de gestão de energia que se adequam às tecnologias estudadas, que permitam a sua gestão inteligente, no contexto residencial e de serviços. Nesta tese, os algoritmos de gestão, os modelos das baterias, a indicação de parâmetros técnicos, económicos e energéticos foram combinados numa ferramenta para estudo da simulação da operação destas tecnologias permitindo definir diferente objetivos, afinar parâmetros e até operar conjuntamente diferentes tecnologias. Este trabalho foi acompanhado pelo paralelismo de projetos nacionais e internacionais, tentado dar resposta a problemas existentes na operação de sistemas reais, e lacunas identificadas na fase de projeto, tal como uma ferramenta de dimensionamento robusto, com a integração de diferentes formas de gerir baterias

    COBE's search for structure in the Big Bang

    The launch of Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) and the definition of Earth Observing System (EOS) are two of the major events at NASA-Goddard. The three experiments contained in COBE (Differential Microwave Radiometer (DMR), Far Infrared Absolute Spectrophotometer (FIRAS), and Diffuse Infrared Background Experiment (DIRBE)) are very important in measuring the big bang. DMR measures the isotropy of the cosmic background (direction of the radiation). FIRAS looks at the spectrum over the whole sky, searching for deviations, and DIRBE operates in the infrared part of the spectrum gathering evidence of the earliest galaxy formation. By special techniques, the radiation coming from the solar system will be distinguished from that of extragalactic origin. Unique graphics will be used to represent the temperature of the emitting material. A cosmic event will be modeled of such importance that it will affect cosmological theory for generations to come. EOS will monitor changes in the Earth's geophysics during a whole solar color cycle
