    ARMD Workshop on Materials and Methods for Rapid Manufacturing for Commercial and Urban Aviation

    This report documents the goals, organization and outcomes of the NASA Aeronautics Research Mission Directorates (ARMD) Materials and Methods for Rapid Manufacturing for Commercial and Urban Aviation Workshop. The workshop began with a series of plenary presentations by leaders in the field of structures and materials, followed by concurrent symposia focused on forecasting the future of various technologies related to rapid manufacturing of metallic materials and polymeric matrix composites, referred to herein as composites. Shortly after the workshop, questionnaires were sent to key workshop participants from the aerospace industry with requests to rank the importance of a series of potential investment areas identified during the workshop. Outcomes from the workshop and subsequent questionnaires are being used as guidance for NASA investments in this important technology area

    RISKS IDENTIFICATION AND MITIGATION IN UAV APPLICATIONS DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS

    With the recent advances in aircraft technologies, software, sensors, and communications, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) can offer a wide range of applications. UAVs can play important roles in applications, such as search and rescue, situation awareness in natural disasters, environmental monitoring, and perimeter surveillance. Developing UAV applications involves integrating hardware, software, sensors, and communication components with the UAV’s base system. UAV applications development projects are complex because of the various development stages and the integration complexity of high component. This research addresses the business and technical challenges encountered by UAV applications development and Project Management (PM). It identifies the risks associated with UAV applications development and compares various risk mitigation and management techniques that can be used. The study also investigates the role of Knowledge Management (KM) in reducing and managing risks. Furthermore, this study proposes a KM framework that reduces risks in UAV applications development projects. In addition, the proposed framework relies on KM and text mining techniques to enhance the efficiency of executing these projects

    GTTC Future of Ground Testing Meta-Analysis of 20 Documents

    National research, development, test, and evaluation ground testing capabilities in the United States are at risk. There is a lack of vision and consensus on what is and will be needed, contributing to a significant threat that ground test capabilities may not be able to meet the national security and industrial needs of the future. To support future decisions, the AIAA Ground Testing Technical Committees (GTTC) Future of Ground Test (FoGT) Working Group selected and reviewed 20 seminal documents related to the application and direction of ground testing. Each document was reviewed, with the content main points collected and organized into sections in the form of a gap analysis current state, future state, major challenges/gaps, and recommendations.     Standardization Roadmap for Unmanned Aircraft Systems, Version 2.0

    This Standardization Roadmap for Unmanned Aircraft Systems, Version 2.0 (“roadmap”) is an update to version 1.0 of this document published in December 2018. It identifies existing standards and standards in development, assesses gaps, and makes recommendations for priority areas where there is a perceived need for additional standardization and/or pre-standardization R&D. The roadmap has examined 78 issue areas, identified a total of 71 open gaps and corresponding recommendations across the topical areas of airworthiness; flight operations (both general concerns and application-specific ones including critical infrastructure inspections, commercial services, and public safety operations); and personnel training, qualifications, and certification. Of that total, 47 gaps/recommendations have been identified as high priority, 21 as medium priority, and 3 as low priority. A “gap” means no published standard or specification exists that covers the particular issue in question. In 53 cases, additional R&D is needed. As with the earlier version of this document, the hope is that the roadmap will be broadly adopted by the standards community and that it will facilitate a more coherent and coordinated approach to the future development of standards for UAS. To that end, it is envisioned that the roadmap will continue to be promoted in the coming year. It is also envisioned that a mechanism may be established to assess progress on its implementation

    A plm implementation for aerospace systems engineering-conceptual rotorcraft design

    The thesis will discuss the Systems Engineering phase of an original Conceptual Design Engineering Methodology for Aerospace Engineering-Vehicle Synthesis. This iterative phase is shown to benefit from digitization of Integrated Product&Process Design (IPPD) activities, through the application of Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) technologies. Requirements analysis through the use of Quality Function Deployment (QFD) and 7 MaP tools is explored as an illustration. A "Requirements Data Manager" (RDM) is used to show the ability to reduce the time and cost to design for both new and legacy/derivative designs. Here the COTS tool Teamcenter Systems Engineering (TCSE) is used as the RDM. The utility of the new methodology is explored through consideration of a legacy RFP based vehicle design proposal and associated aerospace engineering. The 2001 American Helicopter Society (AHS) 18th Student Design Competition RFP is considered as a starting point for the Systems Engineering phase. A Conceptual Design Engineering activity was conducted in 2000/2001 by Graduate students (including the author) in Rotorcraft Engineering at the Daniel Guggenheim School of Aerospace Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta GA. This resulted in the "Kingfisher" vehicle design, an advanced search and rescue rotorcraft capable of performing the "Perfect Storm" mission, from the movie of the same name. The associated requirements, architectures, and work breakdown structure data sets for the Kingfisher are used to relate the capabilities of the proposed Integrated Digital Environment (IDE). The IDE is discussed as a repository for legacy knowledge capture, management, and design template creation. A primary thesis theme is to promote the automation of the up-front conceptual definition of complex systems, specifically aerospace vehicles, while anticipating downstream preliminary and full spectrum lifecycle design activities.     Health management design considerations for an all electric aircraft

    This paper explains the On-board IVHM system for a State-Of-the-Art “All electric aircraft” and explores implementing practices for analysis based design, illustrations and development of IVHM capabilities. On implementing the system as an on board system will carry out fault detection and isolation, recommend maintenance action, provides prognostic capabilities to highest possible problems before these became critical. The vehicle Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) and adaptive control algorithm development based on an open architecture system which allow “Plug in and Plug off” various systems in a more efficient and flexible way. The scope of the IVHM design included consideration of data collection and communication from the continuous monitoring of aircraft systems, observation of current system states, and processing of this data to support proper maintenance and repair actions. Legacy commercial platforms and HM applications for various subsystems of these aircraft were identified. The list of possible applications was down-selected to a reduced number that offer the highest value using a QFD matrix based on the cost benefit analysis. Requirements, designs and system architectures were developed for these applications. The application areas considered included engine, tires and brakes, pneumatics and air conditioning, generator, and structures. IVHM design program included identification of application sensors, functions and interfaces; IVHM system architecture, descriptions of certification requirements and approaches; the results of a cost/benefit analyses and recommended standards and technology gaps. The work concluded with observations on nature of HM, the technologies, and the approaches and challenges to its integration into the current avionics, support system and business infrastructure. The IVHM design for All Electric Hybrid Wing Body (HWB) Aircraft has a challenging task of addressing and resolving the shortfalls in the legacy IVHM framework. The challenges like sensor battery maintenance, handling big data from SHM, On-Ground Data transfer by light, Extraction of required features at sensor nodes/RDCUs, ECAM/EICAS Interfaces, issues of certification of wireless SHM network has been addressed in this paper. Automatic Deployable Flight Data recorders are used in the design of HWB aircraft in which critical flight parameters are recorded. The component selection of IVHM system including software and hardware have been based on the COTS technology. The design emphasis on high levels of reliability and maintainability. The above systems are employed using IMA and integrated on AFDX data bus. The design activities has to pass through design reviews on systematic basis and the overall approach has been to make system highly lighter, effective “All weather” compatible and modular. It is concluded from the study of advancement in IVHM capabilities and new service offerings that IVHM technology is emerging as well as challenging. With the inclusion of adaptive control, vehicle condition based maintenance and pilot fatigue monitoring, IVHM evolved as a more proactively involved on-board system

    Trim Flight Conditions for a Low-Boom Aircraft Design Under Uncertainty

    The purpose of this paper is to investigate the noise generation of a low-boom aircraft design in flight trim conditions under uncertainty. The deflection of control surfaces to maintain a trimmed flight state has the potential to change the perceived loudness at the ground. Furthermore, the uncertainties associated with the control surface deflections can complicate the overall uncertainty quantification. Incorporation of the uncertainties in the prediction of perceived sound levels during the design phase can lead to improved robustness. In this paper, a brief review of low-boom flight trim research is presented. Realistic flight trim conditions requiring control surface deflection are integrated into the current research efforts for uncertainty quantification and vehicle design. In addition, a generalized set of procedures for the characterization of uncertainties in flight trim conditions are introduced. In a case study of the application of these procedures, a 5 decibel average difference in the perceived level of loudness was found between clean (no deflections) and trimmed configurations. Also, uncertainties attributable to control surface deflection were found to account for, on average, over 50% of the total near field uncertainty. Uncertainty discretization methods implemented were able to give more insight into the overall global variances

    Baseline Assumptions and Future Research Areas for Urban Air Mobility Vehicles

    NASA is developing Urban Air Mobility (UAM) concepts to (1) create first-generation reference vehicles that can be used for technology, system, and market studies, and (2) hypothesize second-generation UAM aircraft to determine high-payoff technology targets and future research areas that reach far beyond initial UAM vehicle capabilities. This report discusses the vehicle-level technology assumptions for NASAs UAM reference vehicles, and highlights future research areas for second-generation UAM aircraft that includes deflected slipstream concepts, low-noise rotors for edgewise flight, stacked rotors/propellers, ducted propellers, solid oxide fuel cells with liquefied natural gas, and improved turbo shaft and reciprocating engine technology. The report also highlights a transportation network-scale model that is being developed to understand the impact of these and other technologies on future UAM solutions
