Kinematic and Dynamic Analysis of the 2-DOF Spherical Wrist of Orthoglide 5-axis

    Get PDF
This paper deals with the kinematics and dynamics of a two degree of freedom spherical manipulator, the wrist of Orthoglide 5-axis. The latter is a parallel kinematics machine composed of two manipulators: i) the Orthoglide 3-axis; a three-dof translational parallel manipulator that belongs to the family of Delta robots, and ii) the Agile eye; a two-dof parallel spherical wrist. The geometric and inertial parameters used in the model are determined by means of a CAD software. The performance of the spherical wrist is emphasized by means of several test trajectories. The effects of machining and/or cutting forces and the length of the cutting tool on the dynamic performance of the wrist are also analyzed. Finally, a preliminary selection of the motors is proposed from the velocities and torques required by the actuators to carry out the test trajectories

Kinematic Analysis and Trajectory Planning of the Orthoglide 5-axis

The subject of this paper is about the kinematic analysis and the trajectory planning of the Orthoglide 5-axis. The Orthoglide 5-axis a five degrees of freedom parallel kinematic machine developed at IRCCyN and is made up of a hybrid architecture, namely, a three degrees of freedom translational parallel manip-ulator mounted in series with a two degrees of freedom parallel spherical wrist. The simpler the kinematic modeling of the Or-thoglide 5-axis, the higher the maximum frequency of its control loop. Indeed, the control loop of a parallel kinematic machine should be computed with a high frequency, i.e., higher than 1.5 MHz, in order the manipulator to be able to reach high speed motions with a good accuracy. Accordingly, the direct and inverse kinematic models of the Orthoglide 5-axis, its inverse kine-matic Jacobian matrix and the first derivative of the latter with respect to time are expressed in this paper. It appears that the kinematic model of the manipulator under study can be written in a quadratic form due to the hybrid architecture of the Orthoglide 5-axis. As illustrative examples, the profiles of the actuated joint angles (lengths), velocities and accelerations that are used in the control loop of the robot are traced for two test trajectories.Comment: Appears in International Design Engineering Technical Conferences \& Computers and Information in Engineering Conference, Aug 2015, Boston, United States. 201

    Parallel Manipulators

    Get PDF
In recent years, parallel kinematics mechanisms have attracted a lot of attention from the academic and industrial communities due to potential applications not only as robot manipulators but also as machine tools. Generally, the criteria used to compare the performance of traditional serial robots and parallel robots are the workspace, the ratio between the payload and the robot mass, accuracy, and dynamic behaviour. In addition to the reduced coupling effect between joints, parallel robots bring the benefits of much higher payload-robot mass ratios, superior accuracy and greater stiffness; qualities which lead to better dynamic performance. The main drawback with parallel robots is the relatively small workspace. A great deal of research on parallel robots has been carried out worldwide, and a large number of parallel mechanism systems have been built for various applications, such as remote handling, machine tools, medical robots, simulators, micro-robots, and humanoid robots. This book opens a window to exceptional research and development work on parallel mechanisms contributed by authors from around the world. Through this window the reader can get a good view of current parallel robot research and applications

An Overview of Kinematic and Calibration Models Using Internal/External Sensors or Constraints to Improve the Behavior of Spatial Parallel Mechanisms

    Get PDF
This paper presents an overview of the literature on kinematic and calibration models of parallel mechanisms, the influence of sensors in the mechanism accuracy and parallel mechanisms used as sensors. The most relevant classifications to obtain and solve kinematic models and to identify geometric and non-geometric parameters in the calibration of parallel robots are discussed, examining the advantages and disadvantages of each method, presenting new trends and identifying unsolved problems. This overview tries to answer and show the solutions developed by the most up-to-date research to some of the most frequent questions that appear in the modelling of a parallel mechanism, such as how to measure, the number of sensors and necessary configurations, the type and influence of errors or the number of necessary parameters

Optimal Reconfiguration of a Parallel Robot for Forward Singularities Avoidance in Rehabilitation Therapies. A Comparison via Different Optimization Methods

[EN] This paper presents an efficient algorithm for the reconfiguration of a parallel kinematic manipulator with four degrees of freedom. The reconfiguration of the parallel manipulator is posed as a nonlinear optimization problem where the design variables correspond to the anchoring points of the limbs of the robot on the fixed platform. The penalty function minimizes the forces applied by the actuators during a specific trajectory. Some constraints are imposed to avoid forward singularities and guarantee the feasibility of the active generalized coordinates for a certain trajectory. The results are compared with different optimization approaches with the aim of avoiding getting trapped into a local minimum and undergoing forward singularities. The comparison covers evolutionary algorithms, heuristics optimizers, multistrategy algorithms, and gradient-based optimizers. The proposed methodology has been successfully tested on an actual parallel robot for different trajectories. This research was funded by the Spanish Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports, grant number DPI2017-84201-R.Llopis-Albert, C.; Valero ChuliĂĄ, FJ.; Mata Amela, V.; Pulloquinga-Zapata, J.; Zamora-Ortiz, P.; Escarabajal-SĂĄnchez, RJ. Multiobjective Optimum Design of a 3-RRR Spherical Parallel Manipulator with Kinematic and Dynamic Dexterities

    Get PDF
This paper deals with the kinematic synthesis problem of a 3-underlineRRR spherical parallel manipulator, based on the evaluation criteria of the kinematic, kinetostatic and dynamic performances of the manipulator. A multiobjective optimization problem is formulated to optimize the structural and geometric parameters of the spherical parallel manipulator. The proposed approach is illustrated with the optimum design of a special spherical parallel manipulator with unlimited rolling motion. The corresponding optimization problem aims to maximize the kinematic and dynamic dexterities over its regular shaped workspace

Design and Development of 3-DOF Modular Micro Parallel Kinematic Manipulator

    Get PDF
This paper presents the research and development of a 3-legged micro Parallel Kinematic Manipulator (PKM) for positioning in micro-machining and assembly operations. The structural characteristics associated with parallel manipulators are evaluated and the PKMs with translational and rotational movements are identified. Based on these identifications, a hybrid 3-UPU (Universal Joint-Prismatic Joint-Universal Joint) parallel manipulator is designed and fabricated. The principles of the operation and modeling of this micro PKM is largely similar to a normal size Stewart Platform (SP). A modular design methodology is introduced for the construction of this micro PKM. Calibration results of this hybrid 3-UPU PKM are discussed in this paper.Singapore-MIT Alliance (SMA
