A Key to Dutch History
Many people know the stories behind the tulip mania in the 17th century and the legacy of the Dutch East India Company, but what basic knowledge of Dutch history and culture should be passed on to future generations? A Key to Dutch History and its resulting overview of historical highlights, assembled by a number of specialists in consultation with the Dutch general public, provides a thought-provoking and timely answer. The democratic process behind the volume is reminiscent of the way in which the Netherlands has succeeded for centuries at collective craftsmanship, and says as much about the Netherlands as does the outcome of the opinions voiced. The Cultural Canon of the Netherlands consists of a list of fifty topics from Dutch culture and history, varying from the megalithic tombs in the province of Drenthe and Willem of Orange to the Dutch constitution and the vast natural gas field in the province of Groningen. These fifty topics act as a framework for understanding and even studying Dutch culture and history. The canon should lead to further understanding and deepening of our knowledge of our past and act as an inspirational source for pupils, students and the public at large
Photographs in Dutch History Textbooks: Quantity, type and educational use
This article demonstrates a media scientific approach by studying the use of photographs in Dutch History textbooks for High School pupils in the period 1970 – 2000. The quantity of photos has been determined as well as the types of pictures and its use as educational tool. Results show that more photographs are published over time, press photographs are used more often and photos function more frequently as educational instrument and are not only used as illustration. However, statistical analysis shows that the rise in educational use of photographs can not be linked at the increasing use of press photos. Nevertheless, three reasons for this increasing educational use are formulated. First, more images are available through archives by the process of digitization and better search techniques. Second, changing curricula and the way learning objectives are defined create better ways to use photographs in textbooks. Third, Dutch authors of history textbooks increasingly pay attention to educational theories. This new generation editors are called ‘hybrid historians’. They are skilled historians and are specialized in didactic methods which help them to utilize pictures as didactical instruments and not only as illustration

The Netherlands:political development and data for 2017
The year 2017 was a period of contradictory developments in terms of political stability in the Netherlands. On the one hand, the Mark Rutte II cabinet, the longest serving cabinet since the Second World War, was the first since 1998 to complete its entire term. On the other hand, the highly volatile 2017 national elections yielded the most fractionalized parliament in Dutch history. The ensuing cabinet formation was the longest one to date

Cleavage in Dutch society : changing patterns of social and economic discrimination
The paper considers a (static) portfolio system that satisfies adding-up contraints and the gross substitution theorem. The paper shows the relationship of the two conditions to the weak dominant diagonal property of the matrix of interest rate elasticities. This enables to investigate the impact of simultaneous changes in interest rates on the asset demands.
