    A Sinusoidal Current Driver With an Extended Frequency Range and Multifrequency Operation for Bioimpedance Applications

    This paper describes an alternative sinusoidal current driver suitable for bioimpedance applications where high frequency operation is required. The circuit is based on a transconductor and provides current outputs with low phase error for frequencies around its pole frequency. This extends the upper frequency operational limit of the current driver. Multifrequency currents can be generated where each individual frequency is phase corrected. Analysis of the circuit is presented together with simulation and experimental results which demonstrate the proof of concept for both single and dual frequency current drivers. Measurements on a discrete test version of the circuit demonstrate a phase reduction from 25 ^{\circ} to 4 ^{\circ} at 3 MHz for 2 mAp-p output current. The output impedance of the current driver is essentially constant at about 1.1 M \Omega over a frequency range of 100 kHz to 5 MHz due to the introduction of the phase compensation. The compensation provides a bandwidth increase of a factor of about six for a residual phase delay of 4 ^{\circ

    Linear models for control of cavity flow oscillations

    Models for understanding and controlling oscillations in the flow past a rectangular cavity are developed. These models may be used to guide control designs, to understand performance limits of feedback, and to interpret experimental results. Traditionally, cavity oscillations are assumed to be self-sustained: no external disturbances are necessary to maintain the oscillations, and amplitudes are limited by nonlinearities. We present experimental data which suggests that in some regimes, the oscillations may not be self-sustained, but lightly damped: oscillations are sustained by external forcing, such as boundary-layer turbulence. In these regimes, linear models suffice to describe the behaviour, and the final amplitude of oscillations depends on the characteristics of the external disturbances. These linear models are particularly appropriate for describing cavities in which feedback has been used for noise suppression, as the oscillations are small and nonlinearities are less likely to be important. It is shown that increasing the gain too much in such feedback control experiments can lead to a peak-splitting phenomenon, which is explained by the linear models. Fundamental performance limits indicate that peak splitting is likely to occur for narrow-bandwidth actuators and controllers

    On dynamic delay and repeater insertion.

    In deep sub-micron technologies, as the wires are placed ever closer and signal rise and fall times go into the sub-nano second region, increased crosstalk has implications on the data throughput and on signal integrity. Depending on the data correlation on the coupled lines, the delay can either decrease or increase. Here we show that in uniform coupled lines, the response for several important switching configurations has a dominant pole characteristic. This allows easy prediction for the average, worst-case and best-case delay of buffered lines. We show that the repeater numbering and sizing can be optimised to deal with crosstalk under different constraints to best match the application. Area and power issues are considered and all equations are checked against a dynamic circuit simulator (SPECTRE)

    Very wide range tunable CMOS/bipolar current mirrors with voltage clamped input

    In low power current mode signal processing circuits it is often necessary to use current mirrors to replicate and amplify/attenuate current signals and clamp the voltage of nodes with high parasitic capacitances so that the smallest currents do not introduce unacceptable delays. The use of tunable active-input current mirrors would meet both requirements. In conventional active-input current mirrors, stability compensation is required. Furthermore, once stabilized, the input current cannot be made arbitrarily small. In this paper we introduce two new active-input current mirrors that clamp their input node to a given voltage. One of them does not require compensation, while the other may under some circumstances. However, for both, the input current may take any value. The mirrors can operate with their transistors biased in strong inversion, weak inversion, or even as CMOS compatible lateral bipolar devices. If it is biased in weak inversion or as lateral bipolars, the current mirror gain can be tuned over a very wide range. According to the experimental measurements provided in this paper, the input current may spawn beyond nine decades and the current mirror gain can be tuned over 11 decades. As an application example, a sinusoidal gm-C-based VCO has been fabricated, whose oscillation frequency could be tuned for over seven decades, between 74 mHz and 1 MHz.Office of Naval Research (USA) N00014-95-1-040

    A virtual actuator approach for the secure control of networked LPV systems under pulse-width modulated DoS attacks

    In this paper, we formulate and analyze the problem of secure control in the context of networked linear parameter varying (LPV) systems. We consider an energy-constrained, pulse-width modulated (PWM) jammer, which corrupts the control communication channel by performing a denial-of-service (DoS) attack. In particular, the malicious attacker is able to erase the data sent to one or more actuators. In order to achieve secure control, we propose a virtual actuator technique under the assumption that the behavior of the attacker has been identified. The main advantage brought by this technique is that the existing components in the control system can be maintained without need of retuning them, since the virtual actuator will perform a reconfiguration of the plant, hiding the attack from the controller point of view. Using Lyapunov-based results that take into account the possible behavior of the attacker, design conditions for calculating the virtual actuators gains are obtained.
