    Real-time UAV Complex Missions Leveraging Self-Adaptive Controller with Elastic Structure

    The expectation of unmanned air vehicles (UAVs) pushes the operation environment to narrow spaces, where the systems may fly very close to an object and perform an interaction. This phase brings the variation in UAV dynamics: thrust and drag coefficient of the propellers might change under different proximity. At the same time, UAVs may need to operate under external disturbances to follow time-based trajectories. Under these challenging conditions, a standard controller approach may not handle all missions with a fixed structure, where there may be a need to adjust its parameters for each different case. With these motivations, practical implementation and evaluation of an autonomous controller applied to a quadrotor UAV are proposed in this work. A self-adaptive controller based on a composite control scheme where a combination of sliding mode control (SMC) and evolving neuro-fuzzy control is used. The parameter vector of the neuro-fuzzy controller is updated adaptively based on the sliding surface of the SMC. The autonomous controller possesses a new elastic structure, where the number of fuzzy rules keeps growing or get pruned based on bias and variance balance. The interaction of the UAV is experimentally evaluated in real time considering the ground effect, ceiling effect and flight through a strong fan-generated wind while following time-based trajectories.Comment: 18 page

    Hybrid active force control for fixed based rotorcraft

    Disturbances are considered major challenges faced in the deployment of rotorcraft unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) systems. Among different types of rotorcraft systems, the twin-rotor helicopter and quadrotor models are considered the most versatile flying machines nowadays due to their range of applications in the civilian and military sectors. However, these systems are multivariate and highly non-linear, making them difficult to be accurately controlled. Their performance could be further compromised when they are operated in the presence of disturbances or uncertainties. This dissertation presents an innovative hybrid control scheme for rotorcraft systems to improve disturbance rejection capability while maintaining system stability, based on a technique called active force control (AFC) via simulation and experimental works. A detailed dynamic model of each aerial system was derived based on the Euler–Lagrange and Newton-Euler methods, taking into account various assumptions and conditions. As a result of the derived models, a proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller was designed to achieve the required altitude and attitude motions. Due to the PID's inability to reject applied disturbances, the AFC strategy was incorporated with the designed PID controller, to be known as the PID-AFC scheme. To estimate control parameters automatically, a number of artificial intelligence algorithms were employed in this study, namely the iterative learning algorithm and fuzzy logic. Intelligent rules of these AI algorithms were designed and embedded into the AFC loop, identified as intelligent active force control (IAFC)-based methods. This involved, PID-iterative learning active force control (PID-ILAFC) and PID-fuzzy logic active force control (PID-FLAFC) schemes. To test the performance and robustness of these proposed hybrid control systems, several disturbance models were introduced, namely the sinusoidal wave, pulsating, and Dryden wind gust model disturbances. Integral square error was selected as the index performance to compare between the proposed control schemes. In this study, the effectiveness of the PID-ILAFC strategy in connection with the body jerk performance was investigated in the presence of applied disturbance. In terms of experimental work, hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) experimental tests were conducted for a fixed-base rotorcraft UAV system to investigate how effective are the proposed hybrid PID-ILAFC schemes in disturbance rejection. Simulated results, in time domains, reveal the efficacy of the proposed hybrid IAFC-based control methods in the cancellation of different applied disturbances, while preserving the stability of the rotorcraft system, as compared to the conventional PID controller. In most of the cases, the simulated results show a reduction of more than 55% in settling time. In terms of body jerk performance, it was improved by around 65%, for twin-rotor helicopter system, and by a 45%, for quadrotor system. To achieve the best possible performance, results recommend using the full output signal produced by the AFC strategy according to the sensitivity analysis. The HIL experimental tests results demonstrate that the PID-ILAFC method can improve the disturbance rejection capability when compared to other control systems and show good agreement with the simulated counterpart. However, the selection of the appropriate learning parameters and initial conditions is viewed as a crucial step toward this improved performance

    Adaptive backstepping controller design of quadrotor biplane for payload delivery

    Performance of the UAVs for a particular application can be enhanced by hybrid design, where take-off, hover, and landing happen like rotary-wing UAVs, and flies like fixed-wing UAVs. A backstepping controller and an adaptive backstepping controller are designed for trajectory tracking and payload delivery in a medical emergency or medical substance delivery like vaccine delivery in the presence of wind gust. Simulation results show that the backstepping controller effectively tracks the trajectory during the entire flight envelope, including take-off, hovering, the transition phase, level flight mode, and landing. A comparison between Backstepping, Integral Terminal Sliding Mode (ITSMC) and Adaptive Backstepping controllers for payload delivery show that the adaptive backstepping controller effectively tracks the altitude and attitude. ITSMC is capable of tracking the desired trajectory for a change in the mass but has sluggish response.     Advanced control for miniature helicopters : modelling, design and flight test

    Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) have been receiving unprecedented development during the past two decades. Among different types of UAVs, unmanned helicopters exhibit promising features gained from vertical-takeoff-and-landing, which make them as a versatile platform for both military and civil applications. The work reported in this thesis aims to apply advanced control techniques, in particular model predictive control (MPC), to an autonomous helicopter in order to enhance its performance and capability. First, a rapid prototyping testbed is developed to enable indoor flight testing for miniature helicopters. This testbed is able to simultaneously observe the flight state, carry out complicated algorithms and realtime control of helicopters all in a Matlab/Simulink environment, which provides a streamline process from algorithm development, simulation to flight tests. Next, the modelling and system identification for small-scale helicopters are studied. A parametric model is developed and the unknown parameters are estimated through the designed identification process. After a mathematical model of the selected helicopter is available, three MPC based control algorithms are developed focusing on different aspects in the operation of autonomous helicopters. The first algorithm is a nonlinear MPC framework. A piecewise constant scheme is used in the MPC formulation to reduce the intensive computation load. A two-level framework is suggested where the nonlinear MPC is combined with a low-level linear controller to allow its application on the systems with fast dynamics. The second algorithm solves the local path planning and the successive tracking control by using nonlinear and linear MPC, respectively. The kinematics and obstacle information are incorporated in the path planning, and the linear dynamics are used to design a flight controller. A guidance compensator dynamically links the path planner and flight controller. The third algorithm focuses on the further reduction of computational load in a MPC scheme and the trajectory tracking control in the presence of uncertainties and disturbances. An explicit nonlinear MPC is developed for helicopters to avoid online optimisation, which is then integrated with a nonlinear disturbance observer to significantly improve its robustness and disturbance attenuation.     A Survey of path following control strategies for UAVs focused on quadrotors

    The trajectory control problem, defined as making a vehicle follow a pre-established path in space, can be solved by means of trajectory tracking or path following. In the trajectory tracking problem a timed reference position is tracked. The path following approach removes any time dependence of the problem, resulting in many advantages on the control performance and design. An exhaustive review of path following algorithms applied to quadrotor vehicles has been carried out, the most relevant are studied in this paper.     Development of U-model enhanced nonlinear dynamic control systems —Framework, algorithms and validation

    This study aims to develop the classical model-based U-control design framework to enhance its robustness and reduce its dependence on model accuracy. By absorbing the design concepts of other advanced control algorithms, firstly, based on the discrete-time U-control algorithm, a continuous-time (CT) U-model based dynamic inversion algorithm is proposed. Then the CT U-control system design procedures are presented and explained step by step with numerical and simulation demonstrations of the linear and nonlinear U-control system design examples. Secondly, the U-control algorithm develops two mainstream nonlinear robust control algorithms, disturbances suppression and disturbances compensation, while maintaining its system dynamic cancellation characteristics, including two-degree-of-freedom U-model-based internal model control (UTDF-IMC), Disturbance observer-based U-control (DOBUC), sliding mode enhanced U-control (U-SMC) and U-model based double sliding mode control (UDSMC) algorithms. At the same time this study first developed and applied the U-control method to a practical industry application: robust quadrotor trajectory tracking control. The proposed UDSMC method and multiple-input and multiple-output extended-state-observer (MIMO-ESO) established the quadrotor flight control system. The difficulties associated with quadrotor velocity measurement disturbances and uncertain aerodynamics are successfully addressed in this control design. A rigorous theoretical analysis has been carried out to determine whether the proposed control system can achieve stable trajectory tracking performance, and a comparative real-time experimental study has also been carried out to verify the better effectiveness of the proposed control system than the classical SMC and built-in PID control system. This study is clearly novel as the methods and experiments it proposed have not been researched before

    Design, Development and Implementation of Intelligent Algorithms to Increase Autonomy of Quadrotor Unmanned Missions

    This thesis presents the development and implementation of intelligent algorithms to increase autonomy of unmanned missions for quadrotor type UAVs. A six-degree-of freedom dynamic model of a quadrotor is developed in Matlab/Simulink in order to support the design of control algorithms previous to real-time implementation. A dynamic inversion based control architecture is developed to minimize nonlinearities and improve robustness when the system is driven outside bounds of nominal design. The design and the implementation of the control laws are described. An immunity-based architecture is introduced for monitoring quadrotor health and its capabilities for detecting abnormal conditions are successfully demonstrated through flight testing. A vision-based navigation scheme is developed to enhance the quadrotor autonomy under GPS denied environments. An optical flow sensor and a laser range finder are used within an Extended Kalman Filter for position estimation and its estimation performance is analyzed by comparing against measurements from a GPS module. Flight testing results are presented where the performances are analyzed, showing a substantial increase of controllability and tracking when the developed algorithms are used under dynamically changing environments.     A Novel Method of Robust Trajectory Linearization Control Based on Disturbance Rejection

    A novel method of robust trajectory linearization control for a class of nonlinear systems with uncertainties based on disturbance rejection is proposed. Firstly, on the basis of trajectory linearization control (TLC) method, a feedback linearization based control law is designed to transform the original tracking error dynamics to the canonical integral-chain form. To address the issue of reducing the influence made by uncertainties, with tracking error as input, linear extended state observer (LESO) is constructed to estimate the tracking error vector, as well as the uncertainties in an integrated manner. Meanwhile, the boundedness of the estimated error is investigated by theoretical analysis. In addition, decoupled controller (which has the characteristic of well-tuning and simple form) based on LESO is synthesized to realize the output tracking for closed-loop system. The closed-loop stability of the system under the proposed LESO-based control structure is established. Also, simulation results are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the control strategy
