They are constrained by hardware since they cannot be too heavy and rely on batteries. Their use still raises a large set of exciting new challenges in terms of trajectory optimization and positioning when they are used alone or in cooperation, and communication when they evolve in swarm, to name but a few examples.     A Survey on Energy Optimization Techniques in UAV-Based Cellular Networks: From Conventional to Machine Learning Approaches

    Wireless communication networks have been witnessing an unprecedented demand due to the increasing number of connected devices and emerging bandwidth-hungry applications. Albeit many competent technologies for capacity enhancement purposes, such as millimeter wave communications and network densification, there is still room and need for further capacity enhancement in wireless communication networks, especially for the cases of unusual people gatherings, such as sport competitions, musical concerts, etc. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been identified as one of the promising options to enhance the capacity due to their easy implementation, pop up fashion operation, and cost-effective nature. The main idea is to deploy base stations on UAVs and operate them as flying base stations, thereby bringing additional capacity to where it is needed. However, because the UAVs mostly have limited energy storage, their energy consumption must be optimized to increase flight time. In this survey, we investigate different energy optimization techniques with a top-level classification in terms of the optimization algorithm employed; conventional and machine learning (ML). Such classification helps understand the state of the art and the current trend in terms of methodology. In this regard, various optimization techniques are identified from the related literature, and they are presented under the above mentioned classes of employed optimization methods. In addition, for the purpose of completeness, we include a brief tutorial on the optimization methods and power supply and charging mechanisms of UAVs. Moreover, novel concepts, such as reflective intelligent surfaces and landing spot optimization, are also covered to capture the latest trend in the literature.Comment: 41 pages, 5 Figures, 6 Tables.     Thirty Years of Machine Learning: The Road to Pareto-Optimal Wireless Networks

    Future wireless networks have a substantial potential in terms of supporting a broad range of complex compelling applications both in military and civilian fields, where the users are able to enjoy high-rate, low-latency, low-cost and reliable information services. Achieving this ambitious goal requires new radio techniques for adaptive learning and intelligent decision making because of the complex heterogeneous nature of the network structures and wireless services. Machine learning (ML) algorithms have great success in supporting big data analytics, efficient parameter estimation and interactive decision making. Hence, in this article, we review the thirty-year history of ML by elaborating on supervised learning, unsupervised learning, reinforcement learning and deep learning. Furthermore, we investigate their employment in the compelling applications of wireless networks, including heterogeneous networks (HetNets), cognitive radios (CR), Internet of things (IoT), machine to machine networks (M2M), and so on. This article aims for assisting the readers in clarifying the motivation and methodology of the various ML algorithms, so as to invoke them for hitherto unexplored services as well as scenarios of future wireless networks.Comment: 46 pages, 22 fig

    Top-Down & Bottom-Up Approaches to Robot Design

    This thesis presents a study of different engineering design methodologies and demonstrates their effectiveness and limitations in actual robot designs. Some of these methods were blended together with focus on providing an easily interpreted project design flow while implementing more bottom-up, or feedback, elements into the design methodology. Typically design methods are learned through experience, and design taught in academia aims to shape and formalize previous experience. Usually, inexperienced engineers are taught approaches resembling the Verein Deutscher Ingenieure (VDI) 2221 process. This method presented by the Association of German Engineers in 2006 is regarded as the general system design process. This introductory process is largely left open to interpretation, and it is often unclear when to implement feedback in the design process. The objective of this thesis is to investigate the roles of top-down and bottom-up processes, and how to integrate them in the robot design methodology. The proposed approach utilizes several components from existing design methods. There are three main conditional loops within the proposed approach. The first loop focuses on defining the problem in a top-down manner through logical decomposition, defining technical requirements, researching solutions, and conducting a trade study. These four steps are done iteratively until reaching the bottom of the system, the most primitive components. This is followed by a modeling and analysis loop. This works from the bottom to the top of the design in preparation for manufacturing and validation. The final loop of the proposed approach focuses on validation and verification. The testing and manufacturing involved allows for alterations to the design to fulfill the original technical requirements. These three loops occur until a proof of concept is achieved. The proposed method is intended to be applied iteratively. The first pass of the method results in a proof of concept, while the second results in a preproduction prototype, and the third in a production model. This assembly of design elements provides a project flow that leaves little to be interpreted and is suitable for small design teams while still flexible enough to be applied to diverse robotics projects. This thesis provides three case studies analyzing the application of the hybrid design approach mentioned above to robotic system development. The first study showcases a complicated system design with a small development team. The second case is of simpler construction with a smaller developer team. This simpler case better demonstrates the benefits of this hybrid approach in robotic system development due to the comparatively higher speed at which the system matures. The third case study shows how this same proposed approach can be applied to the design of a bottom-up controlled swarm. These case studies are for future designers to reference as examples of the hybrid design methodology in application, and what can happen when there is a lack of feedback in design. This proposed hybrid design method can encourage design practices in new engineers that translate better to industrial applications, and therefore encourage faster integration of new engineers into established design engineering practices

    Holistic resource management in UAV-assisted wireless networks

    Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are considered as a promising solution to assist terrestrial networks in future wireless networks (i.e., beyond fifth-generation (B5G) and sixth-generation (6G)). The convergence of various technologies requires future wireless networks to provide multiple functionalities, including communication, computing, control, and caching (4C), necessary for applications such as connected robotics and autonomous systems. The majority of existing works consider the developments in 4C individually, which limits the cooperation among 4C for potential gains. UAVs have been recently introduced to supplement mobile edge computing (MEC) in terrestrial networks to reduce network latency by providing mobile resources at the network edge in future wireless networks. However, compared to ground base stations (BSs), the limited resources at the network edge call for holistic management of the resources, which requires joint optimization. We provide a comprehensive review of holistic resource management in UAV-assisted wireless networks. Integrated resource management considers the challenges associated with aerial networks (such as three-dimensional (3D) placement of UAVs, trajectory planning, channel modelling, and backhaul connectivity) and terrestrial networks (such as limited bandwidth, power, and interference). We present architectures (source-UAV-destination and UAV-destination architecture) and 4C in UAV-assisted wireless networks. We then provide a detailed discussion on resource management by categorizing the optimization problems into individual or combinations of two (communication and computation) or three (communication, computation and control). Moreover, solution approaches and performance metrics are discussed and analyzed for different objectives and problem types. We formulate a mathematical framework for holistic resource management to minimize the linear combination of network latency and cost for user association while guaranteeing the offloading, computing, and caching constraints. Binary decision variables are used to allocate offloading and computing resources. Since the decision variables are binary and constraints are linear, the formulated problem is a binary linear programming problem. We propose a heuristic algorithm based on the interior point method by exploiting the optimization structure of the problem to get a sub-optimal solution with less complexity. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed work when compared to the optimal results obtained using branch and bound. Finally, we discuss insight into the potential future research areas to address the challenges of holistic resource management in UAV-assisted wireless networks

    Information-Theoretic Control of Multiple Sensor Platforms

    This thesis is concerned with the development of a consistent, information-theoretic basis for understanding of coordination and cooperation decentralised multi-sensor multi-platform systems. Autonomous systems composed of multiple sensors and multiple platforms potentially have significant importance in applications such as defence, search and rescue mining or intelligent manufacturing. However, the effective use of multiple autonomous systems requires that an understanding be developed of the mechanisms of coordination and cooperation between component systems in pursuit of a common goal. A fundamental, quantitative, understanding of coordination and cooperation between decentralised autonomous systems is the main goal of this thesis. This thesis focuses on the problem of coordination and cooperation for teams of autonomous systems engaged in information gathering and data fusion tasks. While this is a subset of the general cooperative autonomous systems problem, it still encompasses a range of possible applications in picture compilation, navigation, searching and map building problems. The great advantage of restricting the domain of interest in this way is that an underlying mathematical model for coordination and cooperation can be based on the use of information-theoretic models of platform and sensor abilities. The information theoretic approach builds on the established principles and architecture previously developed for decentralised data fusion systems. In the decentralised control problem addressed in this thesis, each platform and sensor system is considered to be a distinct decision maker with an individual information-theoretic utility measure capturing both local objectives and the inter-dependencies among the decisions made by other members of the team. Together these information-theoretic utilities constitute the team objective. The key contributions of this thesis lie in the quantification and study of cooperative control between sensors and platforms using information as a common utility measure. In particular, * The problem of information gathering is formulated as an optimal control problem by identifying formal measures of information with utility or pay-off. * An information-theoretic utility model of coupling and coordination between decentralised decision makers is elucidated. This is used to describe how the information gathering strategies of a team of autonomous systems are coupled. * Static and dynamic information structures for team members are defined. It is shown that the use of static information structures can lead to efficient, although sub-optimal, decentralised control strategies for the team. * Significant examples in decentralised control of a team of sensors are developed. These include the multi-vehicle multi-target bearings-only tracking problem, and the area coverage or exploration problem for multiple vehicles. These examples demonstrate the range of non-trivial problems to which the theory in this thesis can be employed
