AirSync: Enabling Distributed Multiuser MIMO with Full Spatial Multiplexing
The enormous success of advanced wireless devices is pushing the demand for
higher wireless data rates. Denser spectrum reuse through the deployment of
more access points per square mile has the potential to successfully meet the
increasing demand for more bandwidth. In theory, the best approach to density
increase is via distributed multiuser MIMO, where several access points are
connected to a central server and operate as a large distributed multi-antenna
access point, ensuring that all transmitted signal power serves the purpose of
data transmission, rather than creating "interference." In practice, while
enterprise networks offer a natural setup in which distributed MIMO might be
possible, there are serious implementation difficulties, the primary one being
the need to eliminate phase and timing offsets between the jointly coordinated
access points.
In this paper we propose AirSync, a novel scheme which provides not only time
but also phase synchronization, thus enabling distributed MIMO with full
spatial multiplexing gains. AirSync locks the phase of all access points using
a common reference broadcasted over the air in conjunction with a Kalman filter
which closely tracks the phase drift. We have implemented AirSync as a digital
circuit in the FPGA of the WARP radio platform. Our experimental testbed,
comprised of two access points and two clients, shows that AirSync is able to
achieve phase synchronization within a few degrees, and allows the system to
nearly achieve the theoretical optimal multiplexing gain. We also discuss MAC
and higher layer aspects of a practical deployment. To the best of our
knowledge, AirSync offers the first ever realization of the full multiuser MIMO
gain, namely the ability to increase the number of wireless clients linearly
with the number of jointly coordinated access points, without reducing the per

Exploiting programmable architectures for WiFi/ZigBee inter-technology cooperation
The increasing complexity of wireless standards has shown that protocols cannot be designed once for all possible deployments, especially when unpredictable and mutating interference situations are present due to the coexistence of heterogeneous technologies. As such, flexibility and (re)programmability of wireless devices is crucial in the emerging scenarios of technology proliferation and unpredictable interference conditions.
In this paper, we focus on the possibility to improve coexistence performance of WiFi and ZigBee networks by exploiting novel programmable architectures of wireless devices able to support run-time modifications of medium access operations. Differently from software-defined radio (SDR) platforms, in which every function is programmed from scratch, our programmable architectures are based on a clear decoupling between elementary commands (hard-coded into the devices) and programmable protocol logic (injected into the devices) according to which the commands execution is scheduled.
Our contribution is two-fold: first, we designed and implemented a cross-technology time division multiple access (TDMA) scheme devised to provide a global synchronization signal and allocate alternating channel intervals to WiFi and ZigBee programmable nodes; second, we used the OMF control framework to define an interference detection and adaptation strategy that in principle could work in independent and autonomous networks. Beyond the Bits: Cooperative Packet Recovery Using Physical Layer Information
PhD thesisWireless networks can suffer from high packet loss rates. This paper shows that the loss rate can be significantly reduced by exposing information readily available at the physical layer. We make the physical layer convey an estimate of its confidence that a particular bit is ``0'' or ``1'' to the higher layers. When used with cooperative design, this information dramatically improves the throughput of the wireless network. Access points that hear the same transmission combine their information to correct bits in a packet with minimal overhead. Similarly, a receiver may combine multiple erroneous transmissions to recover a correct packet. We analytically prove that our approach minimizes the errors in packet recovery. We also experimentally demonstrate its benefits using a testbed of GNU software radios. The results show that our approach can reduce loss rate by up to 10x in comparison with the current approach, and significantly outperforms prior cooperation proposals
Architecture for Cognitive Networking within NASAs Future Space Communications Infrastructure
Future space mission concepts and designs pose many networking challenges for command, telemetry, and science data applications with diverse end-to-end data delivery needs. For future end-to-end architecture designs, a key challenge is meeting expected application quality of service requirements for multiple simultaneous mission data flows with options to use diverse onboard local data buses, commercial ground networks, and multiple satellite relay constellations in LEO, MEO, GEO, or even deep space relay links. Effectively utilizing a complex network topology requires orchestration and direction that spans the many discrete, individually addressable computer systems, which cause them to act in concert to achieve the overall network goals. The system must be intelligent enough to not only function under nominal conditions, but also adapt to unexpected situations, and reorganize or adapt to perform roles not originally intended for the system or explicitly programmed. This paper describes architecture features of cognitive networking within the future NASA space communications infrastructure, and interacting with the legacy systems and infrastructure in the meantime. The paper begins by discussing the need for increased automation, including inter-system collaboration. This discussion motivates the features of an architecture including cognitive networking for future missions and relays, interoperating with both existing endpoint-based networking models and emerging information-centric models. From this basis, we discuss progress on a proof-of-concept implementation of this architecture as a cognitive networking on-orbit application on the SCaN Testbed attached to the International Space Station
Cooperative communication in wireless networks: algorithms, protocols and systems
Current wireless network solutions are based on a link abstraction where a
single co-channel transmitter transmits in any time duration. This model severely
limits the performance that can be obtained from the network. Being inherently an
extension of a wired network model, this model is also incapable of handling the
unique challenges that arise in a wireless medium. The prevailing theme of this
research is to explore wireless link abstractions that incorporate the broadcast and
space-time varying nature of the wireless channel. Recently, a new paradigm for
wireless networks which uses the idea of 'cooperative transmissions' (CT) has garnered
significant attention. Unlike current approaches where a single transmitter transmits
at a time in any channel, with CT, multiple transmitters transmit concurrently after
appropriately encoding their transmissions. While the physical layer mechanisms for
CT have been well studied, the higher layer applicability of CT has been relatively
unexplored. In this work, we show that when wireless links use CT, several network
performance metrics such as aggregate throughput, security and spatial reuse can
be improved significantly compared to the current state of the art. In this context,
our first contribution is Aegis, a framework for securing wireless networks against
eavesdropping which uses CT with intelligent scheduling and coding in Wireless Local
Area networks. The second contribution is Symbiotic Coding, an approach to encode
information such that successful reception is possible even upon collisions. The third
contribution is Proteus, a routing protocol that improves aggregate throughput in
multi-hop networks by leveraging CT to adapt the rate and range of links in a flow.

Efficient DSP and Circuit Architectures for Massive MIMO: State-of-the-Art and Future Directions
Massive MIMO is a compelling wireless access concept that relies on the use
of an excess number of base-station antennas, relative to the number of active
terminals. This technology is a main component of 5G New Radio (NR) and
addresses all important requirements of future wireless standards: a great
capacity increase, the support of many simultaneous users, and improvement in
energy efficiency. Massive MIMO requires the simultaneous processing of signals
from many antenna chains, and computational operations on large matrices. The
complexity of the digital processing has been viewed as a fundamental obstacle
to the feasibility of Massive MIMO in the past. Recent advances on
system-algorithm-hardware co-design have led to extremely energy-efficient
implementations. These exploit opportunities in deeply-scaled silicon
technologies and perform partly distributed processing to cope with the
bottlenecks encountered in the interconnection of many signals. For example,
prototype ASIC implementations have demonstrated zero-forcing precoding in real
time at a 55 mW power consumption (20 MHz bandwidth, 128 antennas, multiplexing
of 8 terminals). Coarse and even error-prone digital processing in the antenna
paths permits a reduction of consumption with a factor of 2 to 5. This article
summarizes the fundamental technical contributions to efficient digital signal
processing for Massive MIMO. The opportunities and constraints on operating on
low-complexity RF and analog hardware chains are clarified. It illustrates how
terminals can benefit from improved energy efficiency. The status of technology
and real-life prototypes discussed. Open challenges and directions for future

Modular Heterogeneous Multi-Agent Control Framework with Integrated Payloads
Small unmanned aircraft are being used in an increasing number of applications ranging from emergency response to parcel delivery. Many of these applications are benefited when employed as a multiple-vehicle operation. Such operations often require tight cooperation between heterogeneous vehicles and often depend on integration with sensors and payloads. Multi-agent control algorithms can be implemented to control such systems but often require the development of an underlying vehicle communications framework in addition to a sensors and payloads communications framework. This thesis presents a single unified modular framework, named Clark, and supports heterogeneous multi-agent control and sensor/payload integration. Clark provides a wireless network between agents without relying on pre-existing communications infrastructure, and provides software interfaces for connecting to a variety of payloads. This thesis first reviews small unmanned aircraft systems (SUAS), multi-agent control, multi-agent control testbeds, and wireless networking technologies used on SUAS. Systems engineering is then employed to develop an Identified Need, Concept of Operations (ConOps), and requirements. All Defined, Derived, and Design Requirements are explained and justified. Some requirements are highlighted to demonstrate key features of the Clark framework. The software architecture is explained in detail in a top-down approach. Hardware is selected for prototyping and shown to meet the requirements. Bench tests, ground tests, and flight tests are conducted to verify the framework’s ability to communicate between agents and affect control. Ground testing includes a multi-agent cooperative mission while flight testing features two and three agent missions. Test results are presented and demonstrate the candidacy of Clark as a modular heterogeneous multi-agent control framework with integrated payloads
