    A Robust Consensus Algorithm for Current Sharing and Voltage Regulation in DC Microgrids

    In this paper a novel distributed control algorithm for current sharing and voltage regulation in Direct Current (DC) microgrids is proposed. The DC microgrid is composed of several Distributed Generation units (DGUs), including Buck converters and current loads. The considered model permits an arbitrary network topology and is affected by unknown load demand and modelling uncertainties. The proposed control strategy exploits a communication network to achieve proportional current sharing using a consensus-like algorithm. Voltage regulation is achieved by constraining the system to a suitable manifold. Two robust control strategies of Sliding Mode (SM) type are developed to reach the desired manifold in a finite time. The proposed control scheme is formally analyzed, proving the achievement of proportional current sharing, while guaranteeing that the weighted average voltage of the microgrid is identical to the weighted average of the voltage references.Comment: 12 page

    Passivity-Based Design of Sliding Modes for Optimal Load Frequency Control

    This paper proposes a distributed sliding mode (SM) control strategy for optimal load frequency control (OLFC) in power networks, where besides frequency regulation, minimization of generation costs is also achieved (economic dispatch). We study a nonlinear power network of interconnected (equivalent) generators, including voltage and second-order turbine-governor dynamics. The turbine-governor dynamics suggest the design of a sliding manifold such that the turbine-governor system enjoys a suitable passivity property, once the sliding manifold is attained. This paper offers a new perspective on OLFC by means of SM control, and in comparison with the existing literature, we relax required dissipation conditions on the generation side and assumptions on the system parameters

    Decentralized Sliding Mode Control of Islanded AC Microgrids with Arbitrary Topology

    The present paper deals with modelling of complex microgrids and the design of advanced control strategies of sliding mode type to control them in a decentralized way. More specifically, the model of a microgrid including several distributed generation units (DGus), connected according to an arbitrary complex and meshed topology, and working in islanded operation mode (IOM), is proposed. Moreover, it takes into account all the connection line parameters and it is affected by unknown load dynamics, nonlinearities and unavoidable modelling uncertainties, which make sliding mode control algorithms suitable to solve the considered control problem. Then, a decentralized second order sliding mode (SOSM) control scheme, based on the Suboptimal algorithm is designed for each DGu. The overall control scheme is theoretically analyzed, proving the asymptotic stability of the whole microgrid system. Simulation results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed control approach

    Design of robust Higher Order Sliding Mode control for microgrids

    This paper deals with the design of advanced control strategies of sliding mode type for microgrids. Each distributed generation unit (DGu), constituting the considered microgrid, can work in both grid-connected operation mode (GCOM) and islanded operation mode (IOM). The DGu is affected by load variations, nonlinearities and unavoidable modelling uncertainties. This makes sliding mode control particularly suitable as a solution methodology for the considered problem. In particular, a second order sliding mode (SOSM) control algorithm, belonging to the class of Suboptimal SOSM control, is proposed for both GCOM and IOM, while a third-order sliding mode (3-SM) algorithm is designed only for IOM, in order to achieve, also in this case, satisfactory chattering alleviation. The microgrid system controlled via the proposed sliding mode control laws exhibits appreciable stability properties, which are formally analyzed in the paper. Simulation results also confirm that the obtained closed-loop performances comply with the IEEE recommendations for power systems

    One dimensional chain of quantum molecule motors as a mathematical physics model for muscle fibre

    A quantum chain model of many molecule motors is proposed as a mathematical physics theory on the microscopic modeling of classical force-velocity relation and tension transients of muscle fibre. We proposed quantum many-particle Hamiltonian to predict the force-velocity relation for the slow release of muscle fibre which has no empirical relation yet, it is much more complicate than hyperbolic relation. Using the same Hamiltonian, we predicted the mathematical force-velocity relation when the muscle is stimulated by alternative electric current. The discrepancy between input electric frequency and the muscle oscillation frequency has a physical understanding by Doppler effect in this quantum chain model. Further more, we apply quantum physics phenomena to explore the tension time course of cardiac muscle and insect flight muscle. Most of the experimental tension transients curves found their correspondence in the theoretical output of quantum two-level and three-level model.     Effect of Vinyl Flooring on the Modal Properties of a Steel Footbridge

    Damping ratios associated with non structural elements play an important role in mitigating the pedestrian-induced vibrations of slender footbridges. In particular, this paper analyses the effect of vinyl flooring on the modal parameters of steel footbridges. Motivated by the unexpected high experimental damping ratios of the first vibration modes of a real footbridge, whose deck was covered by a vinyl flooring, this paper aims at assessing more accurately the experimental damping ratios generated by this non-structural element on steel footbridges. For this purpose, a laboratory footbridge was built and vinyl flooring was installed on it. Its numerical and experimental modal parameters without and with the vinyl flooring were determined. The operational modal analysis method was used to estimate experimentally the modal parameters of the structure. The damping ratios associated with the vinyl flooring were obtained via the substraction between the experimental damping ratios of the laboratory footbridge with and without the vinyl flooring. An average increase of the damping ratios of 2.069% was observed due to the vinyl flooring installed.     Stabilizing control for power converters connected to transmission lines

    This paper proposes a switching control strategy for the set-point stabilization of a power converter connected via a transmission line to a resistive load. The strategy employs a Lyapunov function that is directly based on energy considerations of the power converter, as well as of the transmission line described by the telegraph equations. The proposed stabilizing switching control still allows a certain freedom in the choice of the control law, a comparison between a maximum descent strategy and a minimum commutation strategy being discussed on a simple example.
