Topic Maps : a bibliometric study
Topic Maps is an international standard (ISO/IEC 13250) to describe and encode knowledge structures and associating them with relevant information resources. This thesis seeks to investigate what has been written about Topic Maps from year 2000 to 2011, as well as finding out the research and publication trend in Topic Maps. This study was based on quantitative methodology, which was bibliometric analysis. The data was collected from Scopus and Web of Knowledge databases. Search keywords used are ātopic mapā, ātopic mapsā and āISO/IEC 13250ā. A total of 356 publications (265 conference papers, 91 journal articles) from 2001 to 2011 taken into data analysis. The findings revealed that Topic Maps researchers had a preference to present their findings in conference rather than in journal. The authorship pattern was more towards coauthorship. Most researchers were coauthored locally, as international collaboration was very low. Computer science and library and information science related journals were the favourite publishing venue. Majority of the conferences were computer science and education related. The focus of the topic maps was on data integration and interoperability (2001-2004), information theory (2005 ā 2008), knowledge and intelligent based system (2009 ā 2011). Also, there were five themes identified, namely content management, repository, ontology, information architecture, retrieval and navigation, and semantic web. The future research areas will possibly be collaborative e-learning system, knowledge visualization system, visualization construction, semantic metadata creation from a relational database, knowledge navigation and retrieval improvement, intelligent topic map, distributed knowledge management based on extended topic maps, knowledge service system, knowledge representation modeling, and multi granularity and multi-level knowledge.Joint Master Degree in Digital Library Learning (DILL
Geoscience after IT: Part L. Adjusting the emerging information system to new technology
Coherent development depends on following widely used standards that respect our vast legacy of existing entries in the geoscience record. Middleware ensures that we see a coherent view from our desktops of diverse sources of information. Developments specific to managing the written word, map content, and structured data come together in shared metadata linking topics and information types
Knowledge Integration and Diffusion: Measures and Mapping of Diversity and Coherence
I present a framework based on the concepts of diversity and coherence for
the analysis of knowledge integration and diffusion. Visualisations that help
understand insights gained are also introduced. The key novelty offered by this
framework compared to previous approaches is the inclusion of cognitive
distance (or proximity) between the categories that characterise the body of
knowledge under study. I briefly discuss the different methods to map the
cognitive dimension
Contextualization of topics - browsing through terms, authors, journals and cluster allocations
This paper builds on an innovative Information Retrieval tool, Ariadne. The
tool has been developed as an interactive network visualization and browsing
tool for large-scale bibliographic databases. It basically allows to gain
insights into a topic by contextualizing a search query (Koopman et al., 2015).
In this paper, we apply the Ariadne tool to a far smaller dataset of 111,616
documents in astronomy and astrophysics. Labeled as the Berlin dataset, this
data have been used by several research teams to apply and later compare
different clustering algorithms. The quest for this team effort is how to
delineate topics. This paper contributes to this challenge in two different
ways. First, we produce one of the different cluster solution and second, we
use Ariadne (the method behind it, and the interface - called LittleAriadne) to
display cluster solutions of the different group members. By providing a tool
that allows the visual inspection of the similarity of article clusters
produced by different algorithms, we present a complementary approach to other
possible means of comparison. More particular, we discuss how we can - with
LittleAriadne - browse through the network of topical terms, authors, journals
and cluster solutions in the Berlin dataset and compare cluster solutions as
well as see their context.Comment: proceedings of the ISSI 2015 conference (accepted
Building Near-Real-Time Processing Pipelines with the Spark-MPI Platform
Advances in detectors and computational technologies provide new
opportunities for applied research and the fundamental sciences. Concurrently,
dramatic increases in the three Vs (Volume, Velocity, and Variety) of
experimental data and the scale of computational tasks produced the demand for
new real-time processing systems at experimental facilities. Recently, this
demand was addressed by the Spark-MPI approach connecting the Spark
data-intensive platform with the MPI high-performance framework. In contrast
with existing data management and analytics systems, Spark introduced a new
middleware based on resilient distributed datasets (RDDs), which decoupled
various data sources from high-level processing algorithms. The RDD middleware
significantly advanced the scope of data-intensive applications, spreading from
SQL queries to machine learning to graph processing. Spark-MPI further extended
the Spark ecosystem with the MPI applications using the Process Management
Interface. The paper explores this integrated platform within the context of
online ptychographic and tomographic reconstruction pipelines.Comment: New York Scientific Data Summit, August 6-9, 201
Web and Semantic Web Query Languages
A number of techniques have been developed to facilitate
powerful data retrieval on the Web and Semantic Web. Three categories
of Web query languages can be distinguished, according to the format
of the data they can retrieve: XML, RDF and Topic Maps. This article
introduces the spectrum of languages falling into these categories
and summarises their salient aspects. The languages are introduced using
common sample data and query types. Key aspects of the query
languages considered are stressed in a conclusion
Grids and the Virtual Observatory
We consider several projects from astronomy that benefit from the Grid paradigm and
associated technology, many of which involve either massive datasets or the federation
of multiple datasets. We cover image computation (mosaicking, multi-wavelength
images, and synoptic surveys); database computation (representation through XML,
data mining, and visualization); and semantic interoperability (publishing, ontologies,
directories, and service descriptions)
Realising intelligent virtual design
This paper presents a vision and focus for the CAD Centre research: the Intelligent Design Assistant (IDA). The vision is based upon the assumption that the human and computer can operate symbiotically, with the computer providing support for the human within the design process. Recently however the focus has been towards the development of integrated design platforms that provide general support irrespective of the domain, to a number of distributed collaborative designers. This is illustrated within the successfully completed Virtual Reality Ship (VRS) virtual platform, and the challenges are discussed further within the NECTISE, SAFEDOR and VIRTUE projects
