ESPRIT-like two-dimensional direction finding for mixed circular and strictly noncircular sources based on joint diagonalization

In this paper, a two-dimensional (2-D) direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation method for a mixture of circular and strictly noncircular signals is presented based on a uniform rectangular array (URA). We first formulate a new 2-D array model for such a mixture of signals, and then utilize the observed data coupled with its conjugate counterparts to construct a new data vector and its associated covariance matrix for DOA estimation. By exploiting the second-order non-circularity of incoming signals, a computationally effective ESPRIT-like method is adopted to estimate the 2-D DOAs of mixed sources which are automatically paired by joint diagonalization of two direction matrices. One particular advantage of the proposed method is that it can solve the angle ambiguity problem when multiple incoming signals have the same angle θ or β. Furthermore, the theoretical error performance of the proposed method is analyzed and a closed-form expression for the deterministic Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) for the considered signal scenario is derived. Simulation results are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method

A structure-aware DOA estimation method for sources with short known waveforms

For direction of arrival (DOA) estimation with known waveform information, with a larger number of snapshots and a longer duration of the known waveforms, the required storage space for hardware implementation will increase. To save storage resources and also reduce the response time of the array system, the DOA estimation problem with short known waveforms in snapshot size is studied in this paper. We first establish the connection between DOA estimation for known waveform sources and the structured least squares (SLS) technique utilizing a potential rotation invariant property. Next, a constraint is formulated and then transformed into its real and imaginary parts to satisfy the requirements of SLS, and the resultant SLS optimization problem is solved iteratively. Simulation results show that the proposed method has a better performance than the existing DEML method for small numbers of snapshots

Direction of arrival estimation based on a mixed signal transmission model employing a linear tripole array

Direction of arrival (DOA) estimation is an important topic in array signal processing. Currently, most research activities are focused on the single signal transmission (SST) type of signals, i.e. only one physical signal is used to carry the information from a transmitter to a receiver with a given polarisation setting. However, to make full use of the degrees of freedom in spatial domain, signals based on the dual signal transmission (DST) model are more and more widely used, i.e., two signals with different polarisations carrying different information are employed for communication between the transmitter and the receiver. But there is rarely any work on DOA estimation of DST signals. Motivated by such a problem, the paper proposes two methods for DOA estimation of signals based on a mixed signal transmission (MST) model, i.e., a mixture of SST and DST signals. The first method provides a two-step solution and estimate the DOA of the SST signals first and then the DST signals second. The second method estimates the DOA of all signals in one step. Moreover, CRB (Cramér-Rao Bound) for the estimation model is derived to evaluate the performance the proposed methods
