    Fault-Tolerant Control of a Flux-switching Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine

    Je jasné, že nejúspěšnější konstrukce zahrnuje postup vícefázového řízení, ve kterém každá fáze může být považována za samostatný modul. Provoz kterékoliv z jednotek musí mít minimální vliv na ostatní, a to tak, že v případě selhání jedné jednotky ostatní mohou být v provozu neovlivněny. Modulární řešení vyžaduje minimální elektrické, magnetické a tepelné ovlivnění mezi fázemi řízení (měniče). Synchronní stroje s pulzním tokem a permanentními magnety se jeví jako atraktivní typ stroje, jejíž přednostmi jsou vysoký kroutící moment, jednoduchá a robustní konstrukce rotoru a skutečnost, že permanentní magnety i cívky jsou umístěny společně na statoru. FS-PMSM jsou poměrně nové typy střídavého stroje stator-permanentní magnet, které představují významné přednosti na rozdíl od konvenčních rotorů - velký kroutící moment, vysoký točivý moment, v podstatě sinusové zpětné EMF křivky, zároveň kompaktní a robustní konstrukce díky umístění magnetů a vinutí kotvy na statoru. Srovnání výsledků mezi FS-PMSM a klasickými motory na povrchu upevněnými PM (SPM) se stejnými parametry ukazuje, že FS-PMSM vykazuje větší vzduchové mezery hustoty toku, vyšší točivý moment na ztráty v mědi, ale také vyšší pulzaci díky reluktančnímu momentu. Pro stroje buzené permanentními magnety se jedná o tradiční rozpor mezi požadavkem na vysoký kroutící moment pod základní rychlostí (oblast konstantního momentu) a provozem nad základní rychlostí (oblast konstantního výkonu), zejména pro aplikace v hybridních vozidlech. Je předložena nová topologie synchronního stroje s permanentními magnety a spínaným tokem odolného proti poruchám, která je schopná provozu během vinutí naprázdno a zkratovaného vinutí i poruchách měniče. Schéma je založeno na dvojitě vinutém motoru napájeném ze dvou oddělených vektorově řízených napěťových zdrojů. Vinutí jsou uspořádána takovým způsobem, aby tvořila dvě nezávislé a oddělené sady. Simulace a experimentální výzkum zpřesní výkon během obou scénářů jak za normálního provozu, tak za poruch včetně zkratových závad a ukáží robustnost pohonu za těchto podmínek. Tato práce byla publikována v deseti konferenčních příspěvcích, dvou časopisech a knižní kapitole, kde byly představeny jak topologie pohonu a aplikovaná řídící schémata, tak analýzy jeho schopnosti odolávat poruchám.It has become clear that the most successful design approach involves a multiple phase drive in which each phase may be regarded as a single-module. The operation of any one module must have minimal impact upon the others, so that in the event of that module failing the others can continue to operate unaffected. The modular approach requires that there should be minimal electrical, magnetic and thermal interaction between phases of the drive. Flux-Switching permanent magnet synchronous machines (FS-PMSM) have recently emerged as an attractive machine type virtue of their high torque densities, simple and robust rotor structure and the fact that permanent magnets and coils are both located on the stator. Flux-switching permanent magnet (FS-PMSM) synchronous machines are a relatively new topology of stator PM brushless machine. They exhibit attractive merits including the large torque capability and high torque (power) density, essentially sinusoidal back-EMF waveforms, as well as having a compact and robust structure due to both the location of magnets and armature windings in the stator instead of the rotor as those in the conventional rotor-PM machines. The comparative results between a FS-PMSM and a traditional surface-mounted PM (SPM) motor having the same specifications reveal that FS-PMSM exhibits larger air-gap flux density, higher torque per copper loss, but also a higher torque ripple due to cogging -torque. However, for solely permanent magnets excited machines, it is a traditional contradiction between the requests of high torque capability under the base-speed (constant torque region) and wide speed operation above the base speed (constant power region) especially for hybrid vehicle applications. A novel fault-tolerant FS-PMSM drive topology is presented, which is able to operate during open- and short-circuit winding and converter faults. The scheme is based on a dual winding motor supplied from two separate vector-controlled voltage-sourced inverter drives. The windings are arranged in a way so as to form two independent and isolated sets. Simulation and experimental work will detail the driver’s performance during both healthy- and faulty- scenarios including short-circuit faults and will show the drive robustness to operate in these conditions. The work has been published in ten conference papers, two journal papers and a book chapter, presenting both the topology of the drive and the applied control schemes, as well as analysing the fault-tolerant capabilities of the drive.

    An Improved Sideband Current Harmonic Model of Interior PMSM Drive by Considering Magnetic Saturation and Cross-Coupling Effects

    The sideband current harmonics, as parasitic characteristics in permanent-magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) drives with space vector pulsewidth modulation technique, will increase the corresponding electromagnetic loss, torque ripple, vibration, and acoustic noises. Therefore, fast yet accurate evaluation of the resultant sideband current harmonic components is of particular importance during the design stage of the drive system. However, the inevitable magnetic saturation and cross-coupling effects in interior PMSM drives would have a significant impact on the current components, while the existing analytical sideband current harmonic model neglects those effects. This paper introduces a significant improvement on the analytical model by taking into account these effects with corresponding nonlinear factors. Experimental results are carried out to underpin the accuracy improvements of the predictions from the proposed model over the existing analytical one. The proposed model can offer a very detailed and insightful revelation of impacts of the magnetic saturation and cross-coupling effects on the corresponding sideband current harmonics

    Field-oriented control based on hysteresis band current controller for a permanent magnet synchronous motor driven by a direct matrix converter

    © 2018, The Institution of Engineering and Technology. The hysteresis band controller offers excellent dynamic performance. It has been widely researched and applied to the voltage source inverter and inverter fed drives, however it has not been investigated within the context of a matrix converter or a matrix converter based motor drive. In this study, both fixed-band and sinusoidal-band hysteresis current controllers are proposed and developed for a direct matrix converter. A comprehensive comparative evaluation of the two methods is then carried out. Both methods have fast dynamic performance and they inherently integrate the line modulation technique of the virtual rectifier stage into the overall modulation. Surge currents are prevented with the proposed scheme. The sinusoidal-band hysteresis controller demonstrates lower total harmonic distortion at the expense of higher average switching frequency, which is only significantly observable at very high sampling frequencies. The proposed controller is integrated with the field-oriented control to drive a matrix converter fed permanent magnet synchronous machine. The proposed methods are simple and incur a light computational burden, which advances the practical applications of matrix converters in AC motor drives. The simulation and experiment results demonstrate the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed scheme

    Neural-Network Vector Controller for Permanent-Magnet Synchronous Motor Drives: Simulated and Hardware-Validated Results

    This paper focuses on current control in a permanentmagnet synchronous motor (PMSM). The paper has two main objectives: The first objective is to develop a neural-network (NN) vector controller to overcome the decoupling inaccuracy problem associated with conventional PI-based vector-control methods. The NN is developed using the full dynamic equation of a PMSM, and trained to implement optimal control based on approximate dynamic programming. The second objective is to evaluate the robust and adaptive performance of the NN controller against that of the conventional standard vector controller under motor parameter variation and dynamic control conditions by (a) simulating the behavior of a PMSM typically used in realistic electric vehicle applications and (b) building an experimental system for hardware validation as well as combined hardware and simulation evaluation. The results demonstrate that the NN controller outperforms conventional vector controllers in both simulation and hardware implementation

    Reference voltage vector based model predictive torque control with RMS solution for PMSM

    To reduce the computational burden of a conventional model predictive torque controller (MPTC), a reference voltage vector based MPTC strategy is proposed. The reference voltage vector is obtained from the reference stator flux vector and the reference torque. According to the location of the reference voltage vector, a first optimal vector can be determined in a quite straightforward way, improving the system dynamic performance. Furthermore, in order to decrease the torque and flux ripple, a root mean square (RMS) based solution is employed to generate the reference voltage vector and calculate the duty ratio. This method aims at minimizing the RMS error of flux and torque during the whole control period. Then, the steady state performance is improved. Besides, since the new cost function contains only the reference voltage vector, the weighting factor in conventional MPTC is eliminated. In addition, to keep a balance between the steady state performance and switching frequency, the candidates for the second optimal vector are restricted to a certain scope. Simulations were carried out and the results verified the validation of the proposed MPTC strategy

    Min-Max Predictive Control of a Five-Phase Induction Machine

    In this paper, a fuzzy-logic based operator is used instead of a traditional cost function for the predictive stator current control of a five-phase induction machine (IM). The min-max operator is explored for the first time as an alternative to the traditional loss function. With this proposal, the selection of voltage vectors does not need weighting factors that are normally used within the loss function and require a cumbersome procedure to tune. In order to cope with conflicting criteria, the proposal uses a decision function that compares predicted errors in the torque producing subspace and in the x-y subspace.     An Advanced Model Predictive Current Control of Synchronous Reluctance Motors

    Synchronous reluctance motors (SynRMs) have, in recent years, attracted much attention due to their high-efficiency output and nature of their construction denoted by the lack of expensive magnetic materials, thus cheapening the overall cost whilst increasing in robustness. These benefits have made the SynRM a strong contender against other established electric motors in the market. Similarly, model predictive current control (MPCC) has recently become a powerful advanced control technology in industrial drives, being, therefore, a suitable choice for SynRM drives granting overall high control performance and efficiency. However, current prediction in MPCC requires a high number of voltage vectors (VVs) synthesizable by the converter, being therefore computationally demanding. Accordingly, the main goal of this work is the development and analysis of a more efficient and advanced MPCC for SynRMs whilst reducing the computational burden and delivering good control performance in contrast with the standard MPCC. Therefore, to achieve the intended levels of efficiency and control performance in SynRM drives, a combination of two control strategies is developed, which combines hysteresis current control (HCC) and MPCC, dubbed in this work HCC-MPCC. Furthermore, the SynRM dynamic model equations comprising the magnetic saturating effects and iron losses are presented through a detailed theoretical and computational analysis of the drive’s control. Conclusively, the developed HCC-MPCC for SynRM drives is analyzed through thorough and rigorous experimental tests alongside the standard MPCC, whose obtained results are detailed comprehensively.Os motores síncronos de relutância (SynRMs) têm, nos últimos anos, atraído muita atenção devido às suas características construtivas, designadamente pela falta de materiais magnéticos caros, depreciando assim o custo em geral; e simultaneamente pelo aumento em robustez. Esses benefícios tornaram o SynRM num forte concorrente face a outros motores elétricos existentes no mercado. Da mesma forma, o modelo preditivo de controlo de corrente (MPCC) tornou-se recentemente numa poderosa estratégia de controlo avançado em acionamentos industriais, sendo, portanto, uma escolha adequada para acionamentos envolvendo SynRMs, garantindo elevado desempenho e eficiência de controlo. No entanto, a previsão da corrente no MPCC requer um grande número de vetores de tensão (VVs) sintetizáveis pelo conversor, sendo, portanto, exigente computacionalmente. Consequentemente, o objetivo principal deste trabalho é o desenvolvimento e análise de um MPCC mais eficiente e avançado para SynRMs, reduzindo a carga computacional e, simultaneamente, demonstrando um bom desempenho de controlo em contraste com o MPCC clássico. Portanto, para atingir os níveis pretendidos de eficiência e desempenho de controlo em acionamentos com SynRMs, uma combinação de duas estratégias de controlo é desenvolvida, combinando o controlo de corrente de histerese (HCC) e MPCC, denominado neste trabalho HCC-MPCC. Além disso, as equações do modelo dinâmico do SynRM, compreendendo os efeitos de saturação magnética e as perdas de ferro, são apresentadas através de uma análise teórica e computacional detalhada do controlo do acionamento.     A New Scheme to Direct Torque Control of Matrix Converter-Fed Five-Phase Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor

    Multiphase machines have gained an increasing attention due to their more advantages in comparison with three-phase machines. In recent literatures, only voltage source inverters (VSIs) have been used to supply five-phase drives. Matrix converters (MCs) pose many advantages over conventional VSIs, such as lack of dc-bulk capacitors, high quality power output waveform and higher number of output voltages. Due to some special applications of multiphase machines such as ship propulsion and aerospace, the volume of these drives is an important challenging problem. As a consequence, using MCs can be a reasonable alternative. In this paper, a new direct torque control (DTC) algorithm using a three-to-five phase MC is proposed for five-phase permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs). All of output voltage space vectors of three-to-five phase MC are extracted and a new switching table is proposed. Because of higher number of output voltages in MCs, there is a degree of freedom to control input power factor to keep close to unit moreover the torque and flux control. In other words, this proposed method use the advantages of both DTC method and MCs. Simulation results show the effectiveness of presented method in different operation modes

    Fixed Switching Period Discrete-Time Sliding Mode Current Control of a PMSM

The aim of the paper is to design a SMC that improves the traditional PI based Field Oriented Control (FOC) transient response, as well as to reduce the switching frequency variations of the Direct Torque Control (DTC). Such SMC requires a decoupling method of the control actions, which also brings constant switching functions slopes. These constant slopes allow to calculate the required hysteresis band value to control the switching frequency. The digital implementation degrades the performance of the hysteresis comparator and as a consequence, the previously calculated band becomes inaccurate to regulate the switching frequency. In order to recover the analogue hysteresis band comparator performance, a predictive algorithm is proposed.     Parameter estimation for VSI-Fed PMSM based on a dynamic PSO with learning strategies

    © 1986-2012 IEEE.A dynamic particle swarm optimization with learning strategy (DPSO-LS) is proposed for key parameter estimation for permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs), where the voltage-source inverter (VSI) nonlinearities are taken into account in the parameter estimation model and can be estimated simultaneously with other machine parameters. In the DPSO-LS algorithm, a novel movement modification equation with variable exploration vector is designed to effectively update particles, enabling swarms to cover large areas of search space with large probability and thus the global search ability is enhanced. Moreover, a Gaussian-distribution-based dynamic opposition-based learning strategy is developed to help the pBest jump out local optima. The proposed DPSO-LS can significantly enhance the estimator model accuracy and dynamic performance. Finally, the proposed algorithm is applied to multiple parameter estimation including the VSI nonlinearities of a PMSM. The performance of DPSO-LS is compared with several existing PSO algorithms, and the comparison results show that the proposed parameters estimation method has better performance in tracking the variation of machine parameters effectively and estimating the VSI nonlinearities under different operation conditions
