    SMaTTS: standard malay text to speech system

    This paper presents a rule-based text- to- speech (TTS) Synthesis System for Standard Malay, namely SMaTTS. The proposed system using sinusoidal method and some pre- recorded wave files in generating speech for the system. The use of phone database significantly decreases the amount of computer memory space used, thus making the system very light and embeddable. The overall system was comprised of two phases the Natural Language Processing (NLP) that consisted of the high-level processing of text analysis, phonetic analysis, text normalization and morphophonemic module. The module was designed specially for SM to overcome few problems in defining the rules for SM orthography system before it can be passed to the DSP module. The second phase is the Digital Signal Processing (DSP) which operated on the low-level process of the speech waveform generation. A developed an intelligible and adequately natural sounding formant-based speech synthesis system with a light and user-friendly Graphical User Interface (GUI) is introduced. A Standard Malay Language (SM) phoneme set and an inclusive set of phone database have been constructed carefully for this phone-based speech synthesizer. By applying the generative phonology, a comprehensive letter-to-sound (LTS) rules and a pronunciation lexicon have been invented for SMaTTS. As for the evaluation tests, a set of Diagnostic Rhyme Test (DRT) word list was compiled and several experiments have been performed to evaluate the quality of the synthesized speech by analyzing the Mean Opinion Score (MOS) obtained. The overall performance of the system as well as the room for improvements was thoroughly discussed

    A Text-to-speech synthesizer is an application that converts text into spoken word, by analyzing and processing the text using Natural Language Processing (NLP) and then using Digital Signal Processing (DSP) technology to convert this processed text into synthesized speech representation of the text. Here, we developed a useful text-to-speech synthesizer in the form of a simple application that converts inputted text into synthesized speech and reads out to the user which can then be saved as an mp3.file.     The "Tiepstem" : an experimental Dutch keyboard-to-speech system for the speech impaired

    An experimental Dutch keyboard-to-speech system has been developed to explor the possibilities and limitations of Dutch speech synthesis in a communication aid for the speech impaired. The system uses diphones and a formant synthesizer chip for speech synthesis. Input to the system is in pseudo-phonetic notation. Intonation contours using a declination line and various rises and falls are generated starting from an input consisting of punctuation and accent marks. The hardware design has resulted in a small, portable and battery-powered device. A short evaluation with users has been carried out, which has shown possibilities for such a device but has also indicated some problems with the current pseudo-phonetic input

    Design and development of a speech synthesis software for colombian spanish applied to communication through mobile devices

    In several scenarios of everyday life, there is a need to communicate orally with other people. However, various technological solutions such as mobile phones cannot be used in places such as meetings, classrooms, or conference rooms without disrupting the activities of people around the speaker. This research develops a tool that enables people to establish a conversation in a public place without disrupting the surrounding environment. To this end, a speech synthesizer is implemented on a personal computer connected to a cell phone, which allows one to establish a mobile call without using the human voice. The speech synthesizer uses the diphone concatenation technique and is developed specifically for the Spanish from Colombia. A mathematical description of the synthesizer shows the decomposition of the synthesizer into various mutually independent processes. Several user-acceptance and quality tests of the obtained signal were performed to evaluate the performance of the tool. The results show a high signal to noise ratio of generated signals and a high intelligibility of the tool

    A Prosodic Turkish text-to-speech synthesizer

    Naturalness in Text-to-Speech systems is very important in achieving high quality waveform. The naturalness of the waveform is highly correlated with phonetic coverage and prosodic features such as, duration and F0 contour. Duration determines the timing for the synthesized phoneme, whereas F0 contour determines fundamental frequency component of the waveform. This thesis presents the development of a prosodic Text-to-Speech System for Turkish Language using the Festival Tool [31]. We describe a complete realization of a new male voice, covering allophones of Turkish using duration and F0 parameters. The duration of the allophones and the word stress have been studied extensively. Sentence stress and phrasal stress are also discussed by in less detail. Carrier words are designed approximately for all allophone-allophone combinations. 1680 carrier words are recorded in a sound-proof recording studio. LPC (linear predictive coding) and RES (residual) parameters are computed. The text normalisation module is implemented for abbreviations and numbers. Durations for the allophones are entered. Sentence level and word level F0 generation modules are implemented. By increasing the number of phonemes and giving prosody we obtained a more natural sounding Text-to-Speech System for Turkish Language

    U radu je prikazan sustav koji omogućuje umjetnu tvorbu hrvatskoga govora prema proizvoljnom ulaznom tekstu. Ulazni tekst, koji mora biti u normaliziranom obliku, sustav pretvara u niz fonema (pretvorba grafem-fonem), a zatim stvara zvučni zapis na temelju fonetskoga niza. Korišteni postupak sinteze temelji se na ulančavanju manjih akustičkih jedinica govora – difona metodom TD-PSOLA. Za potrebe sustava izrađena je i baza difona za hrvatski govor. Predložen je automatski postupak odabira difona iz govornoga korpusa. Kvaliteta ostvarenoga postupka ispitana je provođenjem ankete među ispitanicima. Ispitanici su dali subjektivnu ocjenu kvalitete dobivenoga govora, a time je provjerena i njegova razumljivost.This paper presents the development of a Croatian text-to-speech system capable of synthesizing speech from arbitrary text. Input text in normalized form is first transcribed into a phonetic string (grapheme-to-phoneme conversion) and then processed by a TD-PSOLA based synthesizer. A procedure for automatic selection of diphones from a spoken corpus is proposed. A Croatian language diphone database was built for the system. Subjective quality evaluations of the resulting speech were performed, as well as tests for intelligibility

    Generating expressive speech for storytelling applications

    Work on expressive speech synthesis has long focused on the expression of basic emotions. In recent years, however, interest in other expressive styles has been increasing. The research presented in this paper aims at the generation of a storytelling speaking style, which is suitable for storytelling applications and more in general, for applications aimed at children. Based on an analysis of human storytellers' speech, we designed and implemented a set of prosodic rules for converting "neutral" speech, as produced by a text-to-speech system, into storytelling speech. An evaluation of our storytelling speech generation system showed encouraging results

    The cross-linguistic performance of word segmentation models over time.

    We select three word segmentation models with psycholinguistic foundations - transitional probabilities, the diphone-based segmenter, and PUDDLE - which track phoneme co-occurrence and positional frequencies in input strings, and in the case of PUDDLE build lexical and diphone inventories. The models are evaluated on caregiver utterances in 132 CHILDES corpora representing 28 languages and 11.9 m words. PUDDLE shows the best performance overall, albeit with wide cross-linguistic variation. We explore the reasons for this variation, fitting regression models to performance scores with linguistic properties which capture lexico-phonological characteristics of the input: word length, utterance length, diversity in the lexicon, the frequency of one-word utterances, the regularity of phoneme patterns at word boundaries, and the distribution of diphones in each language. These properties together explain four-tenths of the observed variation in segmentation performance, a strong outcome and a solid foundation for studying further variables which make the segmentation task difficult

After the invention of computers, computers have been used in order to synthesize speech. By the help of this new technology, Text To Speech (TTS) systems that take a text as input and produce speech as output have been created. Some languages like English and French have taken most of the attention and some languages like Turkish have not been taken into consideration. This thesis presents a TTS system for Turkish that uses the diphone concatenation method. It takes a text as input and produces corresponding speech in Turkish. The output can be obtained in one male voice only in this system. Since Turkish is a phonetic language, this system also can be used for other phonetic languages with some minor modifications. If this system is integrated with a pronunciation unit, it can also be used for languages that are not phonetic.Eker, BarışM.S
