    Driving the Network-on-Chip Revolution to Remove the Interconnect Bottleneck in Nanoscale Multi-Processor Systems-on-Chip

    The sustained demand for faster, more powerful chips has been met by the availability of chip manufacturing processes allowing for the integration of increasing numbers of computation units onto a single die. The resulting outcome, especially in the embedded domain, has often been called SYSTEM-ON-CHIP (SoC) or MULTI-PROCESSOR SYSTEM-ON-CHIP (MP-SoC). MPSoC design brings to the foreground a large number of challenges, one of the most prominent of which is the design of the chip interconnection. With a number of on-chip blocks presently ranging in the tens, and quickly approaching the hundreds, the novel issue of how to best provide on-chip communication resources is clearly felt. NETWORKS-ON-CHIPS (NoCs) are the most comprehensive and scalable answer to this design concern. By bringing large-scale networking concepts to the on-chip domain, they guarantee a structured answer to present and future communication requirements. The point-to-point connection and packet switching paradigms they involve are also of great help in minimizing wiring overhead and physical routing issues. However, as with any technology of recent inception, NoC design is still an evolving discipline. Several main areas of interest require deep investigation for NoCs to become viable solutions: • The design of the NoC architecture needs to strike the best tradeoff among performance, features and the tight area and power constraints of the onchip domain. • Simulation and verification infrastructure must be put in place to explore, validate and optimize the NoC performance. • NoCs offer a huge design space, thanks to their extreme customizability in terms of topology and architectural parameters. Design tools are needed to prune this space and pick the best solutions. • Even more so given their global, distributed nature, it is essential to evaluate the physical implementation of NoCs to evaluate their suitability for next-generation designs and their area and power costs. This dissertation performs a design space exploration of network-on-chip architectures, in order to point-out the trade-offs associated with the design of each individual network building blocks and with the design of network topology overall. The design space exploration is preceded by a comparative analysis of state-of-the-art interconnect fabrics with themselves and with early networkon- chip prototypes. The ultimate objective is to point out the key advantages that NoC realizations provide with respect to state-of-the-art communication infrastructures and to point out the challenges that lie ahead in order to make this new interconnect technology come true. Among these latter, technologyrelated challenges are emerging that call for dedicated design techniques at all levels of the design hierarchy. In particular, leakage power dissipation, containment of process variations and of their effects. The achievement of the above objectives was enabled by means of a NoC simulation environment for cycleaccurate modelling and simulation and by means of a back-end facility for the study of NoC physical implementation effects. Overall, all the results provided by this work have been validated on actual silicon layout

    Towards Efficient Resource Allocation for Embedded Systems

    Das Hauptthema ist die dynamische Ressourcenverwaltung in eingebetteten Systemen, insbesondere die Verwaltung von Rechenzeit und Netzwerkverkehr auf einem MPSoC. Die Idee besteht darin, eine Pipeline für die Verarbeitung von Mobiler Kommunikation auf dem Chip dynamisch zu schedulen, um die Effizienz der Hardwareressourcen zu verbessern, ohne den Ressourcenverbrauch des dynamischen Schedulings dramatisch zu erhöhen. Sowohl Software- als auch Hardwaremodule werden auf Hotspots im Ressourcenverbrauch untersucht und optimiert, um diese zu entfernen. Da Applikationen im Bereich der Signalverarbeitung normalerweise mit Hilfe von SDF-Diagrammen beschrieben werden können, wird deren dynamisches Scheduling optimiert, um den Ressourcenverbrauch gegenüber dem üblicherweise verwendeten statischen Scheduling zu verbessern. Es wird ein hybrider dynamischer Scheduler vorgestellt, der die Vorteile von Processing-Networks und der Planung von Task-Graphen kombiniert. Es ermöglicht dem Scheduler, ein Gleichgewicht zwischen der Parallelisierung der Berechnung und der Zunahme des dynamischen Scheduling-Aufands optimal abzuwägen. Der resultierende dynamisch erstellte Schedule reduziert den Ressourcenverbrauch um etwa 50%, wobei die Laufzeit im Vergleich zu einem statischen Schedule nur um 20% erhöht wird. Zusätzlich wird ein verteilter dynamischer SDF-Scheduler vorgeschlagen, der das Scheduling in verschiedene Teile zerlegt, die dann zu einer Pipeline verbunden werden, um mehrere parallele Prozessoren einzubeziehen. Jeder Scheduling-Teil wird zu einem Cluster mit Load-Balancing erweitert, um die Anzahl der parallel laufenden Scheduling-Jobs weiter zu erhöhen. Auf diese Weise wird dem vorhandene Engpass bei dem dynamischen Scheduling eines zentralisierten Schedulers entgegengewirkt, sodass 7x mehr Prozessoren mit dem Pipelined-Clustered-Dynamic-Scheduler für eine typische Signalverarbeitungsanwendung verwendet werden können. Das neue dynamische Scheduling-System setzt das Vorhandensein von drei verschiedenen Kommunikationsmodi zwischen den Verarbeitungskernen voraus. Bei der Emulation auf Basis des häufig verwendeten RDMA-Protokolls treten Leistungsprobleme auf. Sehr gut kann RDMA für einmalige Punkt-zu-Punkt-Datenübertragungen verwendet werden, wie sie bei der Ausführung von Task-Graphen verwendet werden. Process-Networks verwenden normalerweise Datenströme mit hohem Volumen und hoher Bandbreite. Es wird eine FIFO-basierte Kommunikationslösung vorgestellt, die einen zyklischen Puffer sowohl im Sender als auch im Empfänger implementiert, um diesen Bedarf zu decken. Die Pufferbehandlung und die Datenübertragung zwischen ihnen erfolgen ausschließlich in Hardware, um den Software-Overhead aus der Anwendung zu entfernen. Die Implementierung verbessert die Zugriffsverwaltung mehrerer Nutzer auf flächen-effiziente Single-Port Speichermodule. Es werden 0,8 der theoretisch möglichen Bandbreite, die normalerweise nur mit flächenmäßig teureren Dual-Port-Speichern erreicht wird. Der dritte Kommunikationsmodus definiert eine einfache Message-Passing-Implementierung, die ohne einen Verbindungszustand auskommt. Dieser Modus wird für eine effiziente prozessübergreifende Kommunikation des verteilten Scheduling-Systems und der engen Ansteuerung der restlichen Prozessoren benötigt. Eine Flusskontrolle in Hardware stellt sicher, dass eine große Anzahl von Sendern Nachrichten an denselben Empfänger senden kann. Dabei wird garantiert, dass alle Nachrichten korrekt empfangen werden, ohne dass eine Verbindung hergestellt werden muss und die Nachrichtenlaufzeit gering bleibt. Die Arbeit konzentriert sich auf die Optimierung des Codesigns von Hardware und Software, um die kompromisslose Ressourceneffizienz der dynamischen SDF-Graphen-Planung zu erhöhen. The idea is to dynamically schedule a mobile communication signal processing pipeline on the chip to improve hardware resource efficiency while not dramatically improve resource consumption because of dynamic scheduling overhead. Both software and hardware modules are examined for resource consumption hotspots and optimized to remove them. Since signal processing can usually be described with the help of static data flow (SDF) graphs, the dynamic handling of those is optimized to improve resource consumption over the commonly used static scheduling approach. A hybrid dynamic scheduler is presented that combines benefits from both processing networks and task graph scheduling. It allows the scheduler to optimally balance parallelization of computation and addition of dynamic scheduling overhead. The resulting dynamically created schedule reduces resource consumption by about 50%, with a runtime increase of only 20% compared to a static schedule. Additionally, a distributed dynamic SDF scheduler is proposed that splits the scheduling into different parts, which are then connected to a scheduling pipeli ne to incorporate multiple parallel working processors. Each scheduling stage is reworked into a load-balanced cluster to increase the number of parallel scheduling jobs further. This way, the still existing dynamic scheduling bottleneck of a centralized scheduler is widened, allowing handling 7x more processors with the pipelined, clustered dynamic scheduler for a typical signal processing application. The presented dynamic scheduling system assumes the presence of three different communication modes between the processing cores. When emulated on top of the commonly used remote direct memory access (RDMA) protocol, performance issues are encountered. Firstly, RDMA can neatly be used for single-shot point-to-point data transfers, like used in task graph scheduling. Process networks usually make use of high-volume and high-bandwidth data streams. A first in first out (FIFO) communication solution is presented that implements a cyclic buffer on both sender and receiver to serve this need. The buffer handling and data transfer between them are done purely in hardware to remove software overhead from the application. The implementation improves the multi-user access to area-efficient single port on-chip memory modules. It achieves 0.8 of the theoretically possible bandwidth, usually only achieved with area expensive dual-port memories. The third communication mode defines a lightweight message passing (MP) implementation that is truly connectionless. It is needed for efficient inter-process communication of the distributed and clustered scheduling system and the worker processing units’ tight coupling. A hardware flow control assures that an arbitrary number of senders can spontaneously start sending messages to the same receiver. Yet, all messages are guaranteed to be correctly received while eliminating the need for connection establishment and keeping a low message delay. The work focuses on the hardware-software codesign optimization to increase the uncompromised resource efficiency of dynamic SDF graph scheduling.     Mixed-Criticality Systems on Commercial-Off-the-Shelf Multi-Processor Systems-on-Chip

    Avionics and space industries are struggling with the adoption of technologies like multi-processor system-on-chips (MPSoCs) due to strict safety requirements. This thesis propose a new reference architecture for MPSoC-based mixed-criticality systems (MCS) - i.e., systems integrating applications with different level of criticality - which are a common use case for aforementioned industries. This thesis proposes a system architecture capable of granting partitioning - which is, for short, the property of fault containment. It is based on the detection of spatial and temporal interference, and has been named the online detection of interference (ODIn) architecture. Spatial partitioning requires that an application is not able to corrupt resources used by a different application. In the architecture proposed in this thesis, spatial partitioning is implemented using type-1 hypervisors, which allow definition of resource partitions. An application running in a partition can only access resources granted to that partition, therefore it cannot corrupt resources used by applications running in other partitions. Temporal partitioning requires that an application is not able to unexpectedly change the execution time of other applications. In the proposed architecture, temporal partitioning has been solved using a bounded interference approach, composed of an offline analysis phase and an online safety net. The offline phase is based on a statistical profiling of a metric sensitive to temporal interference’s, performed in nominal conditions, which allows definition of a set of three thresholds: 1. the detection threshold TD; 2. the warning threshold TW ; 3. the α threshold. Two rules of detection are defined using such thresholds: Alarm rule When the value of the metric is above TD. Warning rule When the value of the metric is in the warning region [TW ;TD] for more than α consecutive times. ODIn’s online safety-net exploits performance counters, available in many MPSoC architectures; such counters are configured at bootstrap to monitor the selected metric(s), and to raise an interrupt request (IRQ) in case the metric value goes above TD, implementing the alarm rule. The warning rule is implemented in a software detection module, which reads the value of performance counters when the monitored task yields control to the scheduler and reset them if there is no detection. ODIn also uses two additional detection mechanisms: 1. a control flow check technique, based on compile-time defined block signatures, is implemented through a set of watchdog processors, each monitoring one partition. 2. a timeout is implemented through a system watchdog timer (SWDT), which is able to send an external signal when the timeout is violated. The recovery actions implemented in ODIn are: • graceful degradation, to react to IRQs of WDPs monitoring non-critical applications or to warning rule violations; it temporarily stops non-critical applications to grant resources to the critical application; • hard recovery, to react to the SWDT, to the WDP of the critical application, or to alarm rule violations; it causes a switch to a hot stand-by spare computer. Experimental validation of ODIn was performed on two hardware platforms: the ZedBoard - dual-core - and the Inventami board - quad-core. A space benchmark and an avionic benchmark were implemented on both platforms, composed by different modules as showed in Table 1 Each version of the final application was evaluated through fault injection (FI) campaigns, performed using a specifically designed FI system. There were three types of FI campaigns: 1. HW FI, to emulate single event effects; 2. SW FI, to emulate bugs in non-critical applications; 3. artificial bug FI, to emulate a bug in non-critical applications introducing unexpected interference on the critical application.     Architectural Support for Hypervisor-Level Intrusion Tolerance in MPSoCs

    Increasingly, more aspects of our lives rely on the correctness and safety of computing systems, namely in the embedded and cyber-physical (CPS) domains, which directly affect the physical world. While systems have been pushed to their limits of functionality and efficiency, security threats and generic hardware quality have challenged their safety. Leveraging the enormous modular power, diversity and flexibility of these systems, often deployed in multi-processor systems-on-chip (MPSoC), requires careful orchestration of complex and heterogeneous resources, a task left to low-level software, e.g., hypervisors. In current architectures, this software forms a single point of failure (SPoF) and a worthwhile target for attacks: once compromised, adversaries can gain access to all information and full control over the platform and the environment it controls, for instance by means of privilege escalation and resource allocation. Currently, solutions to protect low-level software often rely on a simpler, underlying trusted layer which is often a SPoF itself and/or exhibits downgraded performance. Architectural hybridization allows for the introduction of trusted-trustworthy components, which combined with fault and intrusion tolerance (FIT) techniques leveraging replication, are capable of safely handling critical operations, thus eliminating SPoFs. Performing quorum-based consensus on all critical operations, in particular privilege management, ensures no compromised low-level software can single handedly manipulate privilege escalation or resource allocation to negatively affect other system resources by propagating faults or further extend an adversary’s control. However, the performance impact of traditional Byzantine fault tolerant state-machine replication (BFT-SMR) protocols is prohibitive in the context of MPSoCs due to the high costs of cryptographic operations and the quantity of messages exchanged. Furthermore, fault isolation, one of the key prerequisites in FIT, presents a complicated challenge to tackle, given the whole system resides within one chip in such platforms. There is so far no solution completely and efficiently addressing the SPoF issue in critical low-level management software. It is our aim, then, to devise such a solution that, additionally, reaps benefit of the tight-coupled nature of such manycore systems. In this thesis we present two architectures, using trusted-trustworthy mechanisms and consensus protocols, capable of protecting all software layers, specifically at low level, by performing critical operations only when a majority of correct replicas agree to their execution: iBFT and Midir. Moreover, we discuss ways in which these can be used at application level on the example of replicated applications sharing critical data structures. It then becomes possible to confine software-level faults and some hardware faults to the individual tiles of an MPSoC, converting tiles into fault containment domains, thus, enabling fault isolation and, consequently, making way to high-performance FIT at the lowest level

    A Survey of Software-Defined Networks-on-Chip: Motivations, Challenges and Opportunities

    Current computing platforms encourage the integration of thousands of processing cores, and their interconnections, into a single chip. Mobile smartphones, IoT, embedded devices, desktops, and data centers use Many-Core Systems-on-Chip (SoCs) to exploit their compute power and parallelism to meet the dynamic workload requirements. Networks-on-Chip (NoCs) lead to scalable connectivity for diverse applications with distinct traffic patterns and data dependencies. However, when the system executes various applications in traditional NoCs—optimized and fixed at synthesis time—the interconnection nonconformity with the different applications’ requirements generates limitations in the performance. In the literature, NoC designs embraced the Software-Defined Networking (SDN) strategy to evolve into an adaptable interconnection solution for future chips. However, the works surveyed implement a partial Software-Defined Network-on-Chip (SDNoC) approach, leaving aside the SDN layered architecture that brings interoperability in conventional networking. This paper explores the SDNoC literature and classifies it regarding the desired SDN features that each work presents. Then, we described the challenges and opportunities detected from the literature survey. Moreover, we explain the motivation for an SDNoC approach, and we expose both SDN and SDNoC concepts and architectures. We observe that works in the literature employed an uncomplete layered SDNoC approach. This fact creates various fertile areas in the SDNoC architecture where researchers may contribute to Many-Core SoCs designs.Las plataformas informáticas actuales fomentan la integración de miles de núcleos de procesamiento y sus interconexiones, en un solo chip. Los smartphones móviles, el IoT, los dispositivos embebidos, los ordenadores de sobremesa y los centros de datos utilizan sistemas en chip (SoC) de muchos núcleos para explotar su potencia de cálculo y paralelismo para satisfacer los requisitos de las cargas de trabajo dinámicas. Las redes en chip (NoC) conducen a una conectividad escalable para diversas aplicaciones con distintos patrones de tráfico y dependencias de datos. Sin embargo, cuando el sistema ejecuta varias aplicaciones en las NoC tradicionales -optimizadas y fijadas en el momento de síntesis, la disconformidad de la interconexión con los requisitos de las distintas aplicaciones genera limitaciones en el rendimiento. En la literatura, los diseños de NoC adoptaron la estrategia de redes definidas por software (SDN) para evolucionar hacia una solución de interconexión adaptable para los futuros chips. Sin embargo, los trabajos estudiados implementan un enfoque parcial de red definida por software en el chip (SDNoC) de SDN, dejando de lado la arquitectura en capas de SDN que aporta interoperabilidad en la red convencional. Este artículo explora la literatura sobre SDNoC y la clasifica en función de las características SDN que presenta cada trabajo. A continuación, describimos los retos y oportunidades detectados a partir del estudio de la literatura. Además, explicamos la motivación para un enfoque SDNoC, y exponemos los conceptos y arquitecturas de SDN y SDNoC. Observamos que los trabajos en la literatura emplean un enfoque SDNoC por capas no completo. Este hecho crea varias áreas fértiles en la arquitectura SDNoC en las que los investigadores pueden contribuir a los diseños de SoCs de muchos núcleos

    Dynamic Resource Allocation in Embedded, High-Performance and Cloud Computing

    The availability of many-core computing platforms enables a wide variety of technical solutions for systems across the embedded, high-performance and cloud computing domains. However, large scale manycore systems are notoriously hard to optimise. Choices regarding resource allocation alone can account for wide variability in timeliness and energy dissipation (up to several orders of magnitude). Dynamic Resource Allocation in Embedded, High-Performance and Cloud Computing covers dynamic resource allocation heuristics for manycore systems, aiming to provide appropriate guarantees on performance and energy efficiency.
