    Applying tropos to socio-technical system design and runtime configuration

    Recent trends in Software Engineering have introduced the importance of reconsidering the traditional idea of software design as a socio-tecnical problem, where human agents are integral part of the system along with hardware and software components. Design and runtime support for Socio-Technical Systems (STSs) requires appropriate modeling techniques and non-traditional infrastructures. Agent-oriented software methodologies are natural solutions to the development of STSs, both humans and technical components are conceptualized and analyzed as part of the same system. In this paper, we illustrate a number of Tropos features that we believe fundamental to support the development and runtime reconïŹguration of STSs. Particularly, we focus on two critical design issues: risk analysis and location variability. We show how they are integrated and used into a planning-based approach to support the designer in evaluating and choosing the best design alternative. Finally, we present a generic framework to develop self-reconïŹgurable STSs

    Unattended network operations technology assessment study. Technical support for defining advanced satellite systems concepts

    The results are summarized of an unattended network operations technology assessment study for the Space Exploration Initiative (SEI). The scope of the work included: (1) identified possible enhancements due to the proposed Mars communications network; (2) identified network operations on Mars; (3) performed a technology assessment of possible supporting technologies based on current and future approaches to network operations; and (4) developed a plan for the testing and development of these technologies. The most important results obtained are as follows: (1) addition of a third Mars Relay Satellite (MRS) and MRS cross link capabilities will enhance the network's fault tolerance capabilities through improved connectivity; (2) network functions can be divided into the six basic ISO network functional groups; (3) distributed artificial intelligence technologies will augment more traditional network management technologies to form the technological infrastructure of a virtually unattended network; and (4) a great effort is required to bring the current network technology levels for manned space communications up to the level needed for an automated fault tolerance Mars communications network

    Distributed on-line safety monitor based on safety assessment model and multi-agent system

    On-line safety monitoring, i.e. the tasks of fault detection and diagnosis, alarm annunciation, and fault controlling, is essential in the operational phase of critical systems. Over the last 30 years, considerable work in this area has resulted in approaches that exploit models of the normal operational behaviour and failure of a system. Typically, these models incorporate on-line knowledge of the monitored system and enable qualitative and quantitative reasoning about the symptoms, causes and possible effects of faults. Recently, monitors that exploit knowledge derived from the application of off-line safety assessment techniques have been proposed. The motivation for that work has been the observation that, in current practice, vast amounts of knowledge derived from off-line safety assessments cease to be useful following the certification and deployment of a system. The concept is potentially very useful. However, the monitors that have been proposed so far are limited in their potential because they are monolithic and centralised, and therefore, have limited applicability in systems that have a distributed nature and incorporate large numbers of components that interact collaboratively in dynamic cooperative structures. On the other hand, recent work on multi-agent systems shows that the distributed reasoning paradigm could cope with the nature of such systems. This thesis proposes a distributed on-line safety monitor which combines the benefits of using knowledge derived from off-line safety assessments with the benefits of the distributed reasoning of the multi-agent system. The monitor consists of a multi-agent system incorporating a number of Belief-Desire-Intention (BDI) agents which operate on a distributed monitoring model that contains reference knowledge derived from off-line safety assessments. Guided by the monitoring model, agents are hierarchically deployed to observe the operational conditions across various levels of the hierarchy of the monitored system and work collaboratively to integrate and deliver safety monitoring tasks. These tasks include detection of parameter deviations, diagnosis of underlying causes, alarm annunciation and application of fault corrective measures. In order to avoid alarm avalanches and latent misleading alarms, the monitor optimises alarm annunciation by suppressing unimportant and false alarms, filtering spurious sensory measurements and incorporating helpful alarm information that is announced at the correct time. The thesis discusses the relevant literature, describes the structure and algorithms of the proposed monitor, and through experiments, it shows the benefits of the monitor which range from increasing the composability, extensibility and flexibility of on-line safety monitoring to ultimately developing an effective and cost-effective monitor. The approach is evaluated in two case studies and in the light of the results the thesis discusses and concludes both limitations and relative merits compared to earlier safety monitoring concepts

    Cooperative Monitoring to Diagnose Multiagent Plans

    Diagnosing the execution of a Multiagent Plan (MAP) means identifying and explaining action failures (i.e., actions that did not reach their expected effects). Current approaches to MAP diagnosis are substantially centralized, and assume that action failures are inde-pendent of each other. In this paper, the diagnosis of MAPs, executed in a dynamic and partially observable environment, is addressed in a fully distributed and asynchronous way; in addition, action failures are no longer assumed as independent of each other. The paper presents a novel methodology, named Cooperative Weak-Committed Moni-toring (CWCM), enabling agents to cooperate while monitoring their own actions. Coop-eration helps the agents to cope with very scarcely observable environments: what an agent cannot observe directly can be acquired from other agents. CWCM exploits nondetermin-istic action models to carry out two main tasks: detecting action failures and building trajectory-sets (i.e., structures representing the knowledge an agent has about the environ-ment in the recent past). Relying on trajectory-sets, each agent is able to explain its own action failures in terms of exogenous events that have occurred during the execution of the actions themselves. To cope with dependent failures, CWCM is coupled with a diagnostic engine that distinguishes between primary and secondary action failures. An experimental analysis demonstrates that the CWCM methodology, together with the proposed diagnostic inferences, are effective in identifying and explaining action failures even in scenarios where the system observability is significantly reduced. 1

    Using bricolage to facilitate emergent collectives in SMEs

    Starting a new business is often done in a realm of improvisation if resources are scarce and the business horizon is far from clear. Strategic improvisation occurs when the design of novel activities unite. We conducted an investigation of so called ‘emergent collectives’ in the context of a small and medium-sized enterprise (SME). Emergent collectives are networks of information nodes with minimal central control and largely controlled by a protocol specification where people can add nodes to the network and have a social incentive to do so. We considered here emergent collectives around an enterprise resources planning (ERP) software and a customer relation management (CRM) software in two open source software (OSS) communities. We investigated how the use of bricolage in the context of a start-up microenterprise can facilitate the adoption of an information system (IS) based on emergent collectives. Bricolage is an improvisational approach that allows learning form concrete experience. In our case study we followed the inception of a new business initiative up to the implementation of an IS, during a period of two years. The case study covers both the usefulness of bricolage for strategic improvisation and for entrepreneurial activity in a knowledge-intensive new business. We adopted an interpretative research strategy and used participatory action research to conduct our inquiry. Our findings lead to the suggestion that emergent collectives can be moulded into a usable set of IS resources applicable in a microenterprise. However the success depends heavily on the ICT managerial and technological capabilities of the CEO and his individual commitment to the process of bricolage. Our findings also show that open ERP and CRM software are not passing delusions. These emergent collectives will not take over proprietary ERP and CRM software all of a sudden, but clearly the rules of the game are slowly changing due to the introduction of new business models. The study contributes to the research of OSS as emergent collectives, bricolage and IS adoption in SMEs

Enterprises are required to constantly redesign their products and continuously reconfigure their manufacturing systems. Traditional approaches to manufacturing systems do not fully satisfy this new situation. Many authors have proposed that artificial intelligence will bring the flexibility and efficiency needed by manufacturing systems. This paper is a review of artificial intelligence techniques used in manufacturing systems. The paper first defines the components of a simplified intelligent manufacturing systems (IMS), the different Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques to be considered and then shows how these AI techniques are used for the components of IMS

    FAST : a fault detection and identification software tool

    The aim of this work is to improve the reliability and safety of complex critical control systems by contributing to the systematic application of fault diagnosis. In order to ease the utilization of fault detection and isolation (FDI) tools in the industry, a systematic approach is required to allow the process engineers to analyze a system from this perspective. In this way, it should be possible to analyze this system to find if it provides the required fault diagnosis and redundancy according to the process criticality. In addition, it should be possible to evaluate what-if scenarios by slightly modifying the process (f.i. adding sensors or changing their placement) and evaluating the impact in terms of the fault diagnosis and redundancy possibilities. Hence, this work proposes an approach to analyze a process from the FDI perspective and for this purpose provides the tool FAST which covers from the analysis and design phase until the final FDI supervisor implementation in a real process. To synthesize the process information, a very simple format has been defined based on XML. This format provides the needed information to systematically perform the Structural Analysis of that process. Any process can be analyzed, the only restriction is that the models of the process components need to be available in the FAST tool. The processes are described in FAST in terms of process variables, components and relations and the tool performs the structural analysis of the process obtaining: (i) the structural matrix, (ii) the perfect matching, (iii) the analytical redundancy relations (if any) and (iv) the fault signature matrix. To aid in the analysis process, FAST can operate stand alone in simulation mode allowing the process engineer to evaluate the faults, its detectability and implement changes in the process components and topology to improve the diagnosis and redundancy capabilities. On the other hand, FAST can operate on-line connected to the process plant through an OPC interface. The OPC interface enables the possibility to connect to almost any process which features a SCADA system for supervisory control. When running in on-line mode, the process is monitored by a software agent known as the Supervisor Agent. FAST has also the capability of implementing distributed FDI using its multi-agent architecture. The tool is able to partition complex industrial processes into subsystems, identify which process variables need to be shared by each subsystem and instantiate a Supervision Agent for each of the partitioned subsystems. The Supervision Agents once instantiated will start diagnosing their local components and handle the requests to provide the variable values which FAST has identified as shared with other agents to support the distributed FDI process.Per tal de facilitar la utilitzaciĂł d'eines per la detecciĂł i identificaciĂł de fallades (FDI) en la indĂșstria, es requereix un enfocament sistemĂ tic per permetre als enginyers de processos analitzar un sistema des d'aquesta perspectiva. D'aquesta forma, hauria de ser possible analitzar aquest sistema per determinar si proporciona el diagnosi de fallades i la redundĂ ncia d'acord amb la seva criticitat. A mĂ©s, hauria de ser possible avaluar escenaris de casos modificant lleugerament el procĂ©s (per exemple afegint sensors o canviant la seva localitzaciĂł) i avaluant l'impacte en quant a les possibilitats de diagnosi de fallades i redundĂ ncia. Per tant, aquest projecte proposa un enfocament per analitzar un procĂ©s des de la perspectiva FDI i per tal d'implementar-ho proporciona l'eina FAST la qual cobreix des de la fase d'anĂ lisi i disseny fins a la implementaciĂł final d'un supervisor FDI en un procĂ©s real. Per sintetitzar la informaciĂł del procĂ©s s'ha definit un format simple basat en XML. Aquest format proporciona la informaciĂł necessĂ ria per realitzar de forma sistemĂ tica l'AnĂ lisi Estructural del procĂ©s. Qualsevol procĂ©s pot ser analitzat, nomĂ©s hi ha la restricciĂł de que els models dels components han d'estar disponibles en l'eina FAST. Els processos es descriuen en termes de variables de procĂ©s, components i relacions i l'eina realitza l'anĂ lisi estructural obtenint: (i) la matriu estructural, (ii) el Perfect Matching, (iii) les relacions de redundĂ ncia analĂ­tica, si n'hi ha, i (iv) la matriu signatura de fallades. Per ajudar durant el procĂ©s d'anĂ lisi, FAST pot operar aĂŻlladament en mode de simulaciĂł permetent a l'enginyer de procĂ©s avaluar fallades, la seva detectabilitat i implementar canvis en els components del procĂ©s i la topologia per tal de millorar les capacitats de diagnosi i redundĂ ncia. Per altra banda, FAST pot operar en lĂ­nia connectat al procĂ©s de la planta per mitjĂ  d'una interfĂ­cie OPC. La interfĂ­cie OPC permet la possibilitat de connectar gairebĂ© a qualsevol procĂ©s que inclogui un sistema SCADA per la seva supervisiĂł. Quan funciona en mode en lĂ­nia, el procĂ©s estĂ  monitoritzat per un agent software anomenat l'Agent Supervisor. Addicionalment, FAST tĂ© la capacitat d'implementar FDI de forma distribuĂŻda utilitzant la seva arquitectura multi-agent. L'eina permet dividir sistemes industrials complexes en subsistemes, identificar quines variables de procĂ©s han de ser compartides per cada subsistema i generar una instĂ ncia d'Agent Supervisor per cadascun dels subsistemes identificats.     Model-based provisioning and management of adaptive distributed communication in mobile cooperative systems

    Adaptation of communication is required to maintain the reliable connection and to ensure the minimum quality in collaborative activities. Within the framework of wireless environment, how can host entities be handled in the event of a sudden unexpected change in communication and reliable sources? This challenging issue is addressed in the context of Emergency rescue system carried out by mobile devices and robots during calamities or disaster. For this kind of scenario, this book proposes an adaptive middleware to support reconfigurable, reliable group communications. Here, the system structure has been viewed at two different states, a control center with high processing power and uninterrupted energy level is responsible for global task and entities like autonomous robots and firemen owning smart devices act locally in the mission. Adaptation at control center is handled by semantic modeling whereas at local entities, it is managed by a software module called communication agent (CA). Modeling follows the well-known SWRL instructions which establish the degree of importance of each communication link or component. Providing generic and scalable solutions for automated self-configuration is driven by rule-based reconfiguration policies. To perform dynamically in changing environment, a trigger mechanism should force this model to take an adaptive action in order to accomplish a certain task, for example, the group chosen in the beginning of a mission need not be the same one during the whole mission. Local entity adaptive mechanisms are handled by CA that manages internal service APIs to configure, set up, and monitors communication services and manages the internal resources to satisfy telecom service requirements
