    Development of DSP Unit for Online Tuning and Application to Neural Pattern Recognition System

    Recently, smaller and more effective recognition system is required in various fields. In our previous researches, the recognition system using neural network (NN) and DSP had been developed. In some research fields, such as biometrics, the target of the system was to recognize patterns whose data varied widely because of the difference of individuals and surroundings, but its recognition ability was not enough. So the online tuning system is proposed in this paper. The proposed system, which is consisted of DSP unit and the NN continuous learning and recognition parts, is used to recognize the patterns whose data varied widely. We discuss to adjust the recognition system to data varied widely by continuous leaning.     The paper presents a method for FPGA implementation of Self-Organizing Map (SOM) artificial neural networks with on-chip learning algorithm. The method aims to build up a specific neural network using generic blocks designed in the MathWorks Simulink environment. The main characteristics of this original solution are: on-chip learning algorithm implementation, high reconfiguration capability and operation under real time constraints.     FPGAs in Industrial Control Applications

    The aim of this paper is to review the state-of-the-art of Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) technologies and their contribution to industrial control applications. Authors start by addressing various research fields which can exploit the advantages of FPGAs. The features of these devices are then presented, followed by their corresponding design tools. To illustrate the benefits of using FPGAs in the case of complex control applications, a sensorless motor controller has been treated. This controller is based on the Extended Kalman Filter. Its development has been made according to a dedicated design methodology, which is also discussed. The use of FPGAs to implement artificial intelligence-based industrial controllers is then briefly reviewed. The final section presents two short case studies of Neural Network control systems designs targeting FPGAs

    DeepEar: Robust smartphone audio sensing in unconstrained acoustic environments using deep learning

    Microphones are remarkably powerful sensors of human behavior and context. However, audio sensing is highly susceptible to wild fluctuations in accuracy when used in diverse acoustic environments (such as, bedrooms, vehicles, or cafes), that users encounter on a daily basis. Towards addressing this challenge, we turn to the field of deep learning; an area of machine learning that has radically changed related audio modeling domains like speech recognition. In this paper, we present DeepEar – the first mobile audio sensing framework built from coupled Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) that simultaneously perform common audio sensing tasks. We train DeepEar with a large-scale dataset including unlabeled data from 168 place visits. The resulting learned model, involving 2.3M parameters, enables DeepEar to significantly increase inference robustness to background noise beyond conventional approaches present in mobile devices. Finally, we show DeepEar is feasible for smartphones by building a cloud-free DSP-based prototype that runs continuously, using only 6% of the smartphone’s battery dailyThis is the author accepted manuscript.     A 64mW DNN-based Visual Navigation Engine for Autonomous Nano-Drones

    Fully-autonomous miniaturized robots (e.g., drones), with artificial intelligence (AI) based visual navigation capabilities are extremely challenging drivers of Internet-of-Things edge intelligence capabilities. Visual navigation based on AI approaches, such as deep neural networks (DNNs) are becoming pervasive for standard-size drones, but are considered out of reach for nanodrones with size of a few cm2{}^\mathrm{2}. In this work, we present the first (to the best of our knowledge) demonstration of a navigation engine for autonomous nano-drones capable of closed-loop end-to-end DNN-based visual navigation. To achieve this goal we developed a complete methodology for parallel execution of complex DNNs directly on-bard of resource-constrained milliwatt-scale nodes. Our system is based on GAP8, a novel parallel ultra-low-power computing platform, and a 27 g commercial, open-source CrazyFlie 2.0 nano-quadrotor. As part of our general methodology we discuss the software mapping techniques that enable the state-of-the-art deep convolutional neural network presented in [1] to be fully executed on-board within a strict 6 fps real-time constraint with no compromise in terms of flight results, while all processing is done with only 64 mW on average.     A committee machine gas identification system based on dynamically reconfigurable FPGA

    This paper proposes a gas identification system based on the committee machine (CM) classifier, which combines various gas identification algorithms, to obtain a unified decision with improved accuracy. The CM combines five different classifiers: K nearest neighbors (KNNs), multilayer perceptron (MLP), radial basis function (RBF), Gaussian mixture model (GMM), and probabilistic principal component analysis (PPCA). Experiments on real sensors' data proved the effectiveness of our system with an improved accuracy over individual classifiers. Due to the computationally intensive nature of CM, its implementation requires significant hardware resources. In order to overcome this problem, we propose a novel time multiplexing hardware implementation using a dynamically reconfigurable field programmable gate array (FPGA) platform. The processing is divided into three stages: sampling and preprocessing, pattern recognition, and decision stage. Dynamically reconfigurable FPGA technique is used to implement the system in a sequential manner, thus using limited hardware resources of the FPGA chip.     Machine Learning for Microcontroller-Class Hardware -- A Review

    The advancements in machine learning opened a new opportunity to bring intelligence to the low-end Internet-of-Things nodes such as microcontrollers. Conventional machine learning deployment has high memory and compute footprint hindering their direct deployment on ultra resource-constrained microcontrollers. This paper highlights the unique requirements of enabling onboard machine learning for microcontroller class devices. Researchers use a specialized model development workflow for resource-limited applications to ensure the compute and latency budget is within the device limits while still maintaining the desired performance. We characterize a closed-loop widely applicable workflow of machine learning model development for microcontroller class devices and show that several classes of applications adopt a specific instance of it. We present both qualitative and numerical insights into different stages of model development by showcasing several use cases.     Digital Signal Processing for The Development of Deep Learning-Based Speech Recognition Technology

    This research discusses digital signal processing in the context of developing deep learning-based speech recognition technology. Given the increasing demand for accurate and efficient speech recognition systems, digital signal processing techniques are essential. The research method used is an experimental method with a quantitative approach. This research method consists of several stages: introduction, research design, data collection, data preprocessing, Deep Learning Model Development, performance training and evaluation, experiments and testing, and data analysis. These findings are expected to contribute to developing more sophisticated and applicable speech recognition systems in various fields. For example, in virtual assistants such as Siri and Google Assistant, improved speech recognition accuracy will allow for more natural interactions and faster responses, improving the user experience. This technology can be used in security systems for safer and more reliable voice authentication, replacing or supplementing passwords and fingerprints. Additionally, in accessibility technology, more accurate voice recognition will be particularly beneficial for individuals with visual impairments or mobility, allowing them to control devices and access information with just voice commands. Other benefits include improvements in automated phone apps, automatic transcription for meetings or conferences, and the development of smart home devices that can be fully voice-operated
