    Practical implementation of fault detection scheme in a three tank system

    This thesis presents a practical implementation of fault detection scheme in a real system by using residuals signals. These residuals have been generated applying the method of a model-based fault diagnosis. Different approaches have been studied and the corresponding algorithms developed. The object of the investigation is the three tank system in which different kind of methods of fault detection were performed. Various scenarios in which faults are simulated in actuators, sensors or components are analyzed considering also the presence of noise. Due to the inherent system characteristics it presents four possible work regions which are usually not taken into account in literature, but studied in this thesis. Also special cases, when the system goes from one region to another through critical points in which the system presents singularities, are shown. Faults will be performed around the time when the system states lie in the neighborhood of the critical points and the main task is now to overcome these singularities and achieve successfully a fault detection.Tesi

    The fault diagnosis of wind turbine systems has been proven to be a challenging task and motivates the research activities carried out through this work. Therefore, this paper deals with the fault diagnosis of wind turbines, and it proposes viable solutions to the problem of earlier fault detection and isolation. The design of the fault indicator involves a data-driven approach, as it represents an effective tool for coping with a poor analytical knowledge of the system dynamics, together with noise and disturbances. In particular, the data-driven proposed solution relies on neural networks that are used to describe the strongly nonlinear relationships between measurement and faults. The chosen network architecture belongs to the nonlinear autoregressive with exogenous input topology, as it can represent a dynamic evolution of the system along time. The developed fault diagnosis scheme is tested by means of a high-fidelity benchmark model, that simulates the normal and the faulty behaviour of a wind turbine. The achieved performances are compared with those of other control strategies, coming from the related literature. Moreover, a Monte Carlo analysis validates the robustness of the proposed solutions against the typical parameter uncertainties and disturbances

    Fault tolerant control for nonlinear aircraft based on feedback linearization

    The thesis concerns the fault tolerant flight control (FTFC) problem for nonlinear aircraft by making use of analytical redundancy. Considering initially fault-free flight, the feedback linearization theory plays an important role to provide a baseline control approach for de-coupling and stabilizing a non-linear statically unstable aircraft system. Then several reconfigurable control strategies are studied to provide further robust control performance:- A neural network (NN)-based adaption mechanism is used to develop reconfigurable FTFC performance through the combination of a concurrent updated learninglaw. - The combined feedback linearization and NN adaptor FTFC system is further improved through the use of a sliding mode control (SMC) strategy to enhance the convergence of the NN learning adaptor. - An approach to simultaneous estimation of both state and fault signals is incorporated within an active FTFC system.The faults acting independently on the three primary actuators of the nonlinear aircraft are compensated in the control system.The theoretical ideas developed in the thesis have been applied to the nonlinear Machan Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) system. The simulation results obtained from a tracking control system demonstrate the improved fault tolerant performance for all the presented control schemes, validated under various faults and disturbance scenarios.A Boeing 747 nonlinear benchmark model, developed within the framework of the GARTEUR FM-AG 16 project “fault tolerant flight control systems”,is used for the purpose of further simulation study and testing of the FTFC scheme developed by making the combined use of concurrent learning NN and SMC theory. The simulation results under the given fault scenario show a promising reconfiguration performance

    Fault Diagnosis and Fault Tolerant Control of Wind Turbines: An Overview

    Wind turbines are playing an increasingly important role in renewable power generation. Their complex and large-scale structure, however, and operation in remote locations with harsh environmental conditions and highly variable stochastic loads make fault occurrence inevitable. Early detection and location of faults are vital for maintaining a high degree of availability and reducing maintenance costs. Hence, the deployment of algorithms capable of continuously monitoring and diagnosing potential faults and mitigating their effects before they evolve into failures is crucial. Fault diagnosis and fault tolerant control designs have been the subject of intensive research in the past decades. Significant progress has been made and several methods and control algorithms have been proposed in the literature. This paper provides an overview of the most recent fault diagnosis and fault tolerant control techniques for wind turbines. Following a brief discussion of the typical faults, the most commonly used model-based, data-driven and signal-based approaches are discussed. Passive and active fault tolerant control approaches are also highlighted and relevant publications are discussed. Future development tendencies in fault diagnosis and fault tolerant control of wind turbines are also briefly stated. The paper is written in a tutorial manner to provide a comprehensive overview of this research topic

    Deep Learning-Based, Passive Fault Tolerant Control Facilitated by a Taxonomy of Cyber-Attack Effects

    In the interest of improving the resilience of cyber-physical control systems to better operate in the presence of various cyber-attacks and/or faults, this dissertation presents a novel controller design based on deep-learning networks. This research lays out a controller design that does not rely on fault or cyber-attack detection. Being passive, the controller’s routine operating process is to take in data from the various components of the physical system, holistically assess the state of the physical system using deep-learning networks and decide the subsequent round of commands from the controller. This use of deep-learning methods in passive fault tolerant control (FTC) is unique in the research literature. The proposed controller is applied to both linear and nonlinear systems. Additionally, the application and testing are accomplished with both actuators and sensors being affected by attacks and /or faults

    Root Cause Analysis of Actuator Fault

    This chapter develops a two-level fault diagnosis (FD) and root cause analysis (RCA) scheme for a class of interconnected invertible dynamic systems and aims at detecting and identifying actuator fault and the causes. By considering actuator as an individual dynamic subsystem connected with process dynamic subsystem in cascade, an interconnected system is then constituted. Invertibility of the interconnected system in faulty model is studied. An interconnected observer is introduced and aims at monitoring the performance of the interconnected system and providing information of actuator fault occurrence. A local fault filter algorithm is then triggered to identify the root causes of the detected actuator faults. According to real plant, outputs of the actuator subsystem are assumed inaccessible and are reconstructed by measurements of the global system, thus providing a means for monitoring and diagnosing the plant at both local and global level

    Fault Diagnosis Techniques for Linear Sampled Data Systems and a Class of Nonlinear Systems

    This thesis deals with the fault diagnosis design problem both for dynamical continuous time systems whose output signal are affected by fixed point quantization,\ud referred as sampled-data systems, and for two different applications whose dynamics are inherent high nonlinear: a remotely operated underwater vehicle and a scramjet-powered hypersonic vehicle.\ud Robustness is a crucial issue. In sampled-data systems, full decoupling of disturbance terms from faulty signals becomes more difficult after discretization.\ud In nonlinear processes, due to hard nonlinearity or the inefficiency of linearization, the “classical” linear fault detection and isolation and fault tolerant control methods may not be applied.\ud Some observer-based fault detection and fault tolerant control techniques are studied throughout the thesis, and the effectiveness of such methods are validated with simulations. The most challenging trade-off is to increase sensitivity to faults and robustness to other unknown inputs, like disturbances. Broadly speaking, fault detection filters are designed in order to generate analytical diagnosis functions, called residuals, which should be independent with respect to the system operating state and should be decoupled from disturbances. Decisions on the occurrence of a possible fault are therefore taken on the basis such residual signals
