A Review on Features’ Robustness in High Diversity Mobile Traffic Classifications

    Get PDF
Mobile traffics are becoming more dominant due to growing usage of mobile devices and proliferation of IoT. The influx of mobile traffics introduce some new challenges in traffic classifications; namely the diversity complexity and behavioral dynamism complexity. Existing traffic classifications methods are designed for classifying standard protocols and user applications with more deterministic behaviors in small diversity. Currently, flow statistics, payload signature and heuristic traffic attributes are some of the most effective features used to discriminate traffic classes. In this paper, we investigate the correlations of these features to the less-deterministic user application traffic classes based on corresponding classification accuracy. Then, we evaluate the impact of large-scale classification on feature's robustness based on sign of diminishing accuracy. Our experimental results consolidate the needs for unsupervised feature learning to address the dynamism of mobile application behavioral traits for accurate classification on rapidly growing mobile traffics

This thesis deals with detection of dynamic network applications. It describes some of the existing protocols and methods of their identification from IP flow and packet contents. It constitues a design of a detection system based on the automatic creation of regular expressions and describes its implementation. It presents the created regular expressions for BitTorrent and eDonkey protocol. It compares their quality with the solution of L7-filter.

Malicious Traffic Detection in Local Networks with Snort

Snort is an open source Network Intrusion Detection System combining the benefits of signature, protocol and anomaly based inspection and is considered to be the most widely de- ployed IDS/IPS technology worldwide. However, Snort's deployment in a large corporate network poses different problems in terms of performance or rule selection. This paper proposes different improvements to the Snort Security Platform: the use of another library is proposed to significantly improve the amount of traffic that can be analyzed, and Snort's multithreading possibilities are explored. A new rule classification has been devised, and rulesets suited to large corporate networks are proposed. The use of Oinkmaster has been tested and documented to seamlessly update Snort's rules

    Mobile unified communication

With the constant evolution of technology, new ways of communication are created everyday. Keeping current with this evolution in telecommunications isn't an easy process: the creation of new applications and services, and the associated lack of familiarity with the new technology and applications, frequently leads to a sub-optimal use. This dissertation is focused on exploring this notion by gathering the most recent communication services on a single mobile application prototype. The target functionality for this prototype is divided in three technological features: voice call service, messaging service and personal data retrieval. The protocols used are SIP, XMPP, SMTP and IMAP, making use of native or third party libraries in the Android OS. By integrating these elements, the resulting prototype was robust and versatile, allowing for a more unified user experience. Despite some ergonomic problems, the final prototype achieved the desired results in the usability tests performed and raised interest from some users due to this unified experience - something which is not present in traditional, single service, communication applications
