Design of Micro Wind Turbine for Low Wind Speed Areas: a Review

With the increase in fossil fuel prices and the increase in demand for renewable energy sources, wind turbines play an important role in becoming the alternative technology in the generation of electricity. Since wind is clean and unbounded, wind energy is one of the best renewable sources of energy for the generation of electricity. This paper presents the ideas of designing a small-sized wind turbine or micro wind turbine for low wind speed areas which can be used in many applications like homes, villages, and so on to produce electricity. A small-sized wind turbine or micro wind turbine is a type of turbine that converts the kinetic energy of wind into electrical energy and it is used to generate power for small power needs. Additionally, this type of micro wind turbine can be used in rural areas, requiring a very low cost for installation

Today’s major research area is based on finding alternatives to fossil fuels. Wind energy can contribute significantly towards renewable energy production. A functional wind turbine built locally proposes a huge impact for Fiji and the Pacific Islands renewable energy industry. The design has to take into consideration the wind speed of the pacific which is quite different from other countries. A low Reynolds number airfoil was selected and modified for horizontal axis wind turbine (HAWT) and its aerodynamic characteristic was studied. The analysis were done using XFoil software, the numerical results were validated with experimental results before analysis were done. The Q-blade Software is used to design the blade for the wind turbine. The cut in velocity of wind turbine is 3 ms-1 , which is a big achievement when it comes for the power generation. The rated power is 50 watts at rated velocity of 6.5 ms-1 and the cut of velocity is at 20 ms-1 . The numerical results were validated with experimental results. The peak power after measurement was 23.73 watts at wind speed of 8 ms-1

Kinetic energy harvesting mechanism for vortex drop structures

Energy recovery from wastewater is gaining significance as utilities work toward achieving energy neutrality and sustainability in their wastewater collection and treatment systems. In this dissertation, kinetic energy harvesting mechanism for vortex drop structures found within the municipal waste and storm water conveyance systems is presented. There are thousands of sewer drop structures installed across the U.S. carrying billions of gallons of sewage each year. A custom micro water turbine is developed in this research which could be retrofitted within the existing drop shafts to harvest the excessive kinetic energy available. This dissertation presents the conceptual design and analysis of the micro turbine\u27s performance through analytical, numerical and experimental methods. Various measured performance characteristics of a custom built turbine retrofitted within a full scale drop structure installed in a laboratory setting is presented

Small Scale Hydropower-Appropriate Technology for Rural Development in Lesser Developed Countries

    Get PDF
Less Developed Countries (LDC\u27s) now have a total of about 2.8 billion people, or approximately 70 percent of the total world population. World populations and current energy consumption are such that is all the world\u27s countries came up to the U.S. per capita energy use, the world\u27s consumption would multiply by a factor of seven. For the LDC\u27s, energy development will be an increasingly important issue. Hydropower technology is on the shelf, and available now, of proven feasibility both technically and economically, and presents a sound and rational energy solution from the environmental viewpoint. It is a technology which could be useful to the Less Developed Countries for the long term, irrespective of the shift from abundant low-cost fossil fuel options or the development of more exotic alternate energy technologies. With its continuing replenishment and nondepleting characteristics, it remains one of the most attractive sources of energy. The nature of water resources includes a distributive element which makes it ideal for rural development. The apparent shift in development policy, from the traditional top-down industrialization approach to the bottoms-up reach the village approach, requires decentralized applications of energy resources attainable through development of hydropower in many regions of the world. Distributed Small Scale Hydropower (SSH) systems offer excellent opportunities to augment energy supplies to many rural areas. Also, in a modest way the development of a community infrastructure, training of operating and maintenance personnel, and initiation of small scale agribusiness enterprises may be undertaken. Each of these activities could result in relatively major contributions to the improvement of quality of life. SSH sites are found in abundancy in most mountainous regions and offer sensible possibilities for decentralized applications in LDC\u27s
