The problem addressed is that of designing a full-order observer that guarantees the exponential stability of the error dynamic system. An effective algebraic matrix equation approach is developed to solve this problem. In particular, both the observer analysis and design problems are investigated. By using the singular value decomposition technique and the generalized inverse theory, sufficient conditions for a neutral-type delay system to be exponentially stable are first established. Then, an explicit expression of the desired observers is derived in terms of some free parameters. Furthermore, an illustrative example is used to demonstrate the validity of the proposed design procedur
The positional-specificity effect reveals a passive-trace contribution to visual short-term memory.
The positional-specificity effect refers to enhanced performance in visual short-term memory (VSTM) when the recognition probe is presented at the same location as had been the sample, even though location is irrelevant to the match/nonmatch decision. We investigated the mechanisms underlying this effect with behavioral and fMRI studies of object change-detection performance. To test whether the positional-specificity effect is a direct consequence of active storage in VSTM, we varied memory load, reasoning that it should be observed for all objects presented in a sub-span array of items. The results, however, indicated that although robust with a memory load of 1, the positional-specificity effect was restricted to the second of two sequentially presented sample stimuli in a load-of-2 experiment. An additional behavioral experiment showed that this disruption wasn't due to the increased load per se, because actively processing a second object--in the absence of a storage requirement--also eliminated the effect. These behavioral findings suggest that, during tests of object memory, position-related information is not actively stored in VSTM, but may be retained in a passive tag that marks the most recent site of selection. The fMRI data were consistent with this interpretation, failing to find location-specific bias in sustained delay-period activity, but revealing an enhanced response to recognition probes that matched the location of that trial's sample stimulus
Disturbance Observer-based Robust Control and Its Applications: 35th Anniversary Overview
Disturbance Observer has been one of the most widely used robust control
tools since it was proposed in 1983. This paper introduces the origins of
Disturbance Observer and presents a survey of the major results on Disturbance
Observer-based robust control in the last thirty-five years. Furthermore, it
explains the analysis and synthesis techniques of Disturbance Observer-based
robust control for linear and nonlinear systems by using a unified framework.
In the last section, this paper presents concluding remarks on Disturbance
Observer-based robust control and its engineering applications.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figure
Robust H∞ filtering for discrete nonlinear stochastic systems with time-varying delay
This is the postprint version of the article. The official published version can be accessed from the link below - © 2007 Elsevier IncIn this paper, we are concerned with the robust H∞ filtering problem for a class of nonlinear discrete time-delay stochastic systems. The system under study involves parameter uncertainties, stochastic disturbances, time-varying delays and sector-like nonlinearities. The problem addressed is the design of a full-order filter such that, for all admissible uncertainties, nonlinearities and time delays, the dynamics of the filtering error is constrained to be robustly asymptotically stable in the mean square, and a prescribed H∞ disturbance rejection attenuation level is also guaranteed. By using the Lyapunov stability theory and some new techniques, sufficient conditions are first established to ensure the existence of the desired filtering parameters. These conditions are dependent on the lower and upper bounds of the time-varying delays. Then, the explicit expression of the desired filter gains is described in terms of the solution to a linear matrix inequality (LMI). Finally, a numerical example is exploited to show the usefulness of the results derived. This work was supported in part by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) of the UK under Grant GR/S27658/01, the Nuffield Foundation of the UK under Grant NAL/00630/G, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation of Germany, the National Natural Science Foundation of China (60774073 and 10471119), the NSF of Jiangsu Province of China (BK2007075 and BK2006064), the Natural Science Foundation of Jiangsu Education Committee of China under Grant 06KJD110206, and the Scientific Innovation Fund of Yangzhou University of China under Grant 2006CXJ002
LMI-Based Reset Unknown Input Observer for State Estimation of Linear Uncertain Systems
This paper proposes a novel kind of Unknown Input Observer (UIO) called Reset
Unknown Input Observer (R-UIO) for state estimation of linear systems in the
presence of disturbance using Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI) techniques. In
R-UIO, the states of the observer are reset to the after-reset value based on
an appropriate reset law in order to decrease the norm and settling time
of estimation error. It is shown that the application of the reset theory to
the UIOs in the LTI framework can significantly improve the transient response
of the observer. Moreover, the devised approach can be applied to both SISO and
MIMO systems. Furthermore, the stability and convergence analysis of the
devised R-UIO is addressed. Finally, the efficiency of the proposed method is
demonstrated by simulation results
generalized multiple delay-dependent H∞, functional observer design for nonlinear system
Producción CientíficaFunctional observers are the major alternative to many practical estimation problems where full-order observers cannot be used. This paper introduces a generalized approach to design H∞ functional observers for a class of Lipschitz nonlinear systems with multiple time delays. Moreover, the considered system extends from previously published work in that it presents nonlinearity, multiple delay and external disturbance. Their main findings come from the development of a generalized augmented Lyapunov function that uses both the extended reciprocal convex combination and the Wirtinger inequality. The stability of the observer is therefore guaranteed by an LMI optimization problem. Finally, the steps of the design procedure were condensed and proffered for the two numerical examples to test the recommended design approach
Functional observers design for nonlinear discrete-time systems with interval time-varying delays
summary:This paper is concerned with the functional observer design for a class of Multi-Input Multi-Output discrete-time systems with mixed time-varying delays. Firstly, using the Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional approach, we design the parameters of the delay-dependent observer. We establish the sufficient conditions to guarantee the exponential stability of functional observer error system. In addition, for design purposes, delay-dependent sufficient conditions are proposed in terms of matrix inequalities to guarantee that the functional observer error system is exponentially stable. Secondly, we presented the sufficient conditions of the existence of internal-delay independent functional observer to ensure the estimated error system is asymptotically stable. Furthermore, some sufficient conditions are obtained to guarantee that the internal-delay independent functional observer error system is exponentially stable. Finally, simulation examples are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method
Robust Fault Detection of Switched Linear Systems with State Delays
This correspondence deals with the problem of robust fault detection for discrete-time switched systems with state delays under an arbitrary switching signal. The fault detection filter is used as the residual generator, in which the filter parameters are dependent on the system mode. Attention is focused on designing the robust fault detection filter such that, for unknown inputs, control inputs, and model uncertainties, the estimation error between the residuals and faults is minimized. The problem of robust fault detection is converted into an H infin-filtering problem. By a switched Lyapunov functional approach, a sufficient condition for the solvability of this problem is established in terms of linear matrix inequalities. A numerical example is provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method
A review of convex approaches for control, observation and safety of linear parameter varying and Takagi-Sugeno systems
This paper provides a review about the concept of convex systems based on Takagi-Sugeno, linear parameter varying (LPV) and quasi-LPV modeling. These paradigms are capable of hiding the nonlinearities by means of an equivalent description which uses a set of linear models interpolated by appropriately defined weighing functions. Convex systems have become very popular since they allow applying extended linear techniques based on linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) to complex nonlinear systems. This survey aims at providing the reader with a significant overview of the existing LMI-based techniques for convex systems in the fields of control, observation and safety. Firstly, a detailed review of stability, feedback, tracking and model predictive control (MPC) convex controllers is considered. Secondly, the problem of state estimation is addressed through the design of proportional, proportional-integral, unknown input and descriptor observers. Finally, safety of convex systems is discussed by describing popular techniques for fault diagnosis and fault tolerant control (FTC).Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
