Drying is one of the crucial processes in agricultural production, especially in grain processing. The drying process can improve grain quality and affect the grain content. However, maintaining the temperature is a challenge in the drying process. Because it can influence the drying performance and produce a low-efficiency reduction of water content, in this study, the hybrid drying system is proposed to improve the performance of the forced convection dryer system. The proposed system used a proportional integral and derivative (PID) control system to obtain the optimal temperature. The proposed system was compared with natural drying and forced convection methods. The experimental result showed that the proposed system performed excellently for three performance evaluations. The average temperature was obtained as the highest of the other methods, with 54.68 °C and 54.55 °C for coffee and cocoa beans. The water content can be reduced by an average of 27.38% and 42.67% for coffee and cocoa beans. Then, the proposed system also had the highest reduction efficiency of water content than the other methods, with 62.71% and 36.94% reductions for coffee and cocoa beans, respectively. The results indicate that the proposed hybrid system performs better than the other methods

Microprocessor control system, based on mathematical optimization model, applying fuzzy sets tools was developed. Microprocessor optimization system is provided to combine intelligent control unit, operator workstation, local meteostation and smart grid invertor. Data exchange was carried out by the standard protocols and data transfer interfaces. Intelligent control unit is suggested to realize on the base of the microcontroller PIC32MZ, manufactured by microchip company, on the base of the core MIPS microAptiv UP. The concept of control is the following: intelligent unit colects the information from the local meteostation, regarding the temperature, amount of solar radiation and air humidity. From the Smart grid the intelligent unit obtains the data concerning the voltage level. As a result of processing the obtained information control unit sends the control signal to the inverter of the photovoltaic power plant and sends the necessary information to the operator workstation. The paper contains the developed circuit diagram and element base, the algorithm of he intelligent unit of microprocessor optimization system operation according to mathematical optimization model, using fuzzy sets tool. As the system is realized on modern element base, this enables to integrate it easily in the existing control systems of photovoltaic power plants and Smart grid systems. The application of the proposed system will enable to improve the efficiency of electric energy transmission by the photovoltaic power plants in the grid and will provide the maintaining of the balance stability of energy system

Hydrodynamics-Biology Coupling for Algae Culture and Biofuel Production

International audienceBiofuel production from microalgae represents an acute optimization problem for industry. There is a wide range of parameters that must be taken into account in the development of this technology. Here, mathematical modelling has a vital role to play. The potential of microalgae as a source of biofuel and as a technological solution for CO2 fixation is the subject of intense academic and industrial research. Large-scale production of microalgae has potential for biofuel applications owing to the high productivity that can be attained in high-rate raceway ponds. We show, through 3D numerical simulations, that our approach is capable of discriminating between situations where the paddle wheel is rapidly moving water or slowly agitating the process. Moreover, the simulated velocity fields can provide lagrangian trajectories of the algae. The resulting light pattern to which each cell is submitted when travelling from light (surface) to dark (bottom) can then be derived. It will then be reproduced in lab experiments to study photosynthesis under realistic light patterns

Heat Transfer in Energy Conversion Systems

In recent years, the scientific community’s interest towards efficient energy conversion systems has significantly increased. One of the reasons is certainly related to the change in the temperature of the planet, which appears to have increased by 0.76 °C with respect to pre-industrial levels, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and this trend has not yet been stopped. The European Union considers it vital to prevent global warming from exceeding 2 °C with respect to pre-industrial levels, since this phenomenon has been proven to result in irreversible and potentially catastrophic changes. These climate changes are mainly caused by the emissions of greenhouse gasses related to human activities, and can be drastically reduced by employing energy systems, for both heating and cooling of buildings and for power production, characterized by high efficiency levels and/or based on renewable energy sources. This Special Issue, published in the journal Energies, includes 12 contributions from across the world, including a wide range of applications, such as HT-PEMFC, district heating systems, a thermoelectric generator for industrial waste, artificial ground freezing, nanofluids, and others
