It begins with a description of the state of the art in the field of RFID positioning with short extension to the area of modeling and prototyping of such systems. After a brief specification of dissertation objectives, the thesis overviews the theory of degenerate channel modeling for RFID communication. Details are given about phase-based ranging and direction of arrival finding methods. Several antenna placement scenarios are proposed for localization purposes. The degenerate channel models are simulated in MATLAB. A significant part of the thesis is devoted to software defined radio (SDR) concept and its adaptation for UHF RFID operation, as it has its specialties which make the usage of standard SDR test equipment very disputable. Transmit carrier leakage into receiver path and requirements on local oscillator signals for mixing are discussed. The development of three experimental prototypes is also presented there: experimental interrogator EXIN-1, measurement system based on Ettus USRP platform, and antenna switching matrix for an emulation of SIMO system. The final part is focused on testing and evaluation of described positioning techniques based on complex backscatter channel transfer function measurement. Both narrowband/wideband ranging and direction of arrival methods are validated. Finally, both proposed antenna placement scenarios are evaluated with real-world measurements.
A phase-based technique for localization of uhf-rfid tags moving on a conveyor belt: Performance analysis and test-case measurements
A new phase-based technique for localization and
tracking of items moving along a conveyor belt and equipped with
ultrahigh frequency-radio frequency identification (UHF-RFID)
tags is described and validated here. The technique is based on
a synthetic-array approach that takes advantage of the fact that
the tagged items move along a conveyor belt whose speed and
path are known apriori. In this framework, a joint use is done
of synthetic-array radar principles, knowledge-based processing,
and efficient exploitation of the reader-tag communication signal.
The technique can be easily implemented in any conventional
reader based on an in-phase and quadrature receiver and it does
not require any modification of the reader antenna configurations
usually adopted in UHF-RFID portals. Numerical results are used
to investigate the performance analysis of such methods, and
also to furnish system design guidelines. Finally, the localization
capability is also demonstrated through a measurement campaign
in a real conveyor belt scenario, showing that a centimeter-order
accuracy in the tag position estimation can be achieved even in
a rich multipath environment

RePos : relative position estimation of UHF-RFID tags for item-level localization
Radio frequency identification (RFID) technology brings tremendous applications in location-based services. Specifically, ultra-high frequency (UHF) RFID tag positioning based on phase (difference) of arrival (PoA/PDoA) has won great attention, due to its better positioning accuracy than signal strength-based methods. In most cases, such as logistics, retailing, and smart inventory management, the relative orders of the objects are much more attractive than absolute positions with centimetre-level accuracy. In this paper, a relative positioning (RePos) approach based on inter-tag distance and direction estimation is proposed. In the RePos positioning system, the measured phases are reconstructed based on unwrapping method. Then the distances from antenna to the tags are calculated using the distance differences of pairs of antenna's positions via a least-squares method. The relative relationships of the tags, including relative distances and angles, are obtained based on the geometry information extracted from PDoA. The experimental results show that the RePos RFID positioning system can realize about 0.28-meter ranging accuracy, and distinguish the levels and columns without ambiguity
Antenna Design for Semi-Passive UHF RFID Transponder with Energy Harvester
A novel microstrip antenna which is dedicated to UHF semi-passive RFID transponders with an energy harvester is presented in this paper. The antenna structure designed and simulated by using Mentor Graphics HyperLynx 3D EM software is described in details. The modeling and simulation results along with comparison with experimental data are analyzed and concluded. The main goal of the project is the need to eliminate a traditional battery form the transponder structure. The energy harvesting block, which is used instead, converts ambient energy (electromagnetic energy of typical radio communication system) into electrical power for internal circuitry. The additional function (gathering extra energy) of the transponder antenna causes the necessity to create new designs in this scope
Hybrid UHF/UWB antenna for passive indoor identification and localization systems
WOS:000312996000040 (NÂş de Acesso Web of Science)There is a growing interest for simultaneous identification and centimetre-resolution localization of multiple targets in indoor environments. A hybrid passive UHF/UWB RFID concept has been recently proposed that conciliates the potential from high resolution UWB impulse radio with the typical range from UHF-RFID identification systems. This paper proposes a new planar antenna for hybrid passive tag systems, which operates both in the UHF-RFID band and in the FCC UWB band. The co-designed UHF and UWB antenna elements are printed back-to-back on each side of a common substrate with appropriate topology for future integration with a single UHF-UWB RFID chip. Experimental tests have shown that both UHF-RFID and UWB performance of the hybrid antenna are comparable to available commercial solutions that work just on a single band. The antenna is adequate for low-cost mass production of hybrid passive tags. It aims at low-cost passive RFID systems combining the ability of item identification with precise tracking in indoor environments
An IoT-Aware Smart System Exploiting the Electromagnetic Behavior of UHF-RFID Tags to Improve Worker Safety in Outdoor Environments
Recently, different solutions leveraging Internet of Things (IoT) technologies have been adopted to avoid accidents in agricultural working environments. As an example, heavy vehicles, e.g., tractors or excavators, have been upgraded with remote controls. Nonetheless, the community continues to encourage discussions on safety issues. In this framework, a localization system installed on remote-controlled farm machines (RCFM) can help in preventing fatal accidents and reduce collision risks. This paper presents an innovative system that exploits passive UHF-RFID technology supported by commercial BLE Beacons for monitoring and preventing accidents that may occur when ground-workers in RCFM collaborate in outdoor agricultural working areas. To this aim, a modular architecture is proposed to locate workers, obstacles and machines and guarantees the security of RCFM movements by using specific notifications for ground-workers prompt interventions. Its main characteristics are presented with its main positioning features based on passive UHF-RFID technology. An experimental campaign discusses its performance and determines the best configuration of the UHF-RFID tags installed on workers and obstacles. Finally, system validation demonstrates the reliability of the main components and the usefulness of the proposed architecture for worker safety
Ultra high frequency (UHF) radio-frequency identification (RFID) for robot perception and mobile manipulation
Personal robots with autonomy, mobility, and manipulation capabilities have the potential to dramatically improve quality of life for various user populations, such as older adults and individuals with motor impairments. Unfortunately, unstructured environments present many challenges that hinder robot deployment in ordinary homes. This thesis seeks to address some of these challenges through a new robotic sensing modality that leverages a small amount of environmental augmentation in the form of Ultra High Frequency (UHF) Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) tags. Previous research has demonstrated the utility of infrastructure tags (affixed to walls) for robot localization; in this thesis, we specifically focus on tagging objects. Owing to their low-cost and passive (battery-free) operation, users can apply UHF RFID tags to hundreds of objects throughout their homes. The tags provide two valuable properties for robots: a unique identifier and receive signal strength indicator (RSSI, the strength of a tag's response). This thesis explores robot behaviors and radio frequency perception techniques using robot-mounted UHF RFID readers that enable a robot to efficiently discover, locate, and interact with UHF RFID tags applied to objects and people of interest. The behaviors and algorithms explicitly rely on the robot's mobility and manipulation capabilities to provide multiple opportunistic views of the complex electromagnetic landscape inside a home environment.
The electromagnetic properties of RFID tags change when applied to common household objects. Objects can have varied material properties, can be placed in diverse orientations, and be relocated to completely new environments. We present a new class of optimization-based techniques for RFID sensing that are robust to the variation in tag performance caused by these complexities. We discuss a hybrid global-local search algorithm where a robot employing long-range directional antennas searches for tagged objects by maximizing expected RSSI measurements; that is, the robot attempts to position itself (1) near a desired tagged object and (2) oriented towards it. The robot first performs a sparse, global RFID search to locate a pose in the neighborhood of the tagged object, followed by a series of local search behaviors (bearing estimation and RFID servoing) to refine the robot's state within the local basin of attraction. We report on RFID search experiments performed in Georgia Tech's Aware Home (a real home). Our optimization-based approach yields superior performance compared to state of the art tag localization algorithms, does not require RF sensor models, is easy to implement, and generalizes to other short-range RFID sensor systems embedded in a robot's end effector. We demonstrate proof of concept applications, such as medication delivery and multi-sensor fusion, using these techniques. Through our experimental results, we show that UHF RFID is a complementary sensing modality that can assist robots in unstructured human environments.PhDCommittee Chair: Kemp, Charles C.; Committee Member: Abowd, Gregory; Committee Member: Howard, Ayanna; Committee Member: Ingram, Mary Ann; Committee Member: Reynolds, Matt; Committee Member: Tentzeris, Emmanoui
Dense and long-term monitoring of Earth surface processes with passive RFID -- a review
Billions of Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) passive tags are produced
yearly to identify goods remotely. New research and business applications are
continuously arising, including recently localization and sensing to monitor
earth surface processes. Indeed, passive tags can cost 10 to 100 times less
than wireless sensors networks and require little maintenance, facilitating
years-long monitoring with ten's to thousands of tags. This study reviews the
existing and potential applications of RFID in geosciences. The most mature
application today is the study of coarse sediment transport in rivers or
coastal environments, using tags placed into pebbles. More recently, tag
localization was used to monitor landslide displacement, with a centimetric
accuracy. Sensing tags were used to detect a displacement threshold on unstable
rocks, to monitor the soil moisture or temperature, and to monitor the snowpack
temperature and snow water equivalent. RFID sensors, available today, could
monitor other parameters, such as the vibration of structures, the tilt of
unstable boulders, the strain of a material, or the salinity of water. Key
challenges for using RFID monitoring more broadly in geosciences include the
use of ground and aerial vehicles to collect data or localize tags, the
increase in reading range and duration, the ability to use tags placed under
ground, snow, water or vegetation, and the optimization of economical and
environmental cost. As a pattern, passive RFID could fill a gap between
wireless sensor networks and manual measurements, to collect data efficiently
over large areas, during several years, at high spatial density and moderate
cost.Comment: Invited paper for Earth Science Reviews. 50 pages without references.
