Poisson noise reduction with non-local PCA
Photon-limited imaging arises when the number of photons collected by a
sensor array is small relative to the number of detector elements. Photon
limitations are an important concern for many applications such as spectral
imaging, night vision, nuclear medicine, and astronomy. Typically a Poisson
distribution is used to model these observations, and the inherent
heteroscedasticity of the data combined with standard noise removal methods
yields significant artifacts. This paper introduces a novel denoising algorithm
for photon-limited images which combines elements of dictionary learning and
sparse patch-based representations of images. The method employs both an
adaptation of Principal Component Analysis (PCA) for Poisson noise and recently
developed sparsity-regularized convex optimization algorithms for
photon-limited images. A comprehensive empirical evaluation of the proposed
method helps characterize the performance of this approach relative to other
state-of-the-art denoising methods. The results reveal that, despite its
conceptual simplicity, Poisson PCA-based denoising appears to be highly

Geometry-Aware Neighborhood Search for Learning Local Models for Image Reconstruction
Local learning of sparse image models has proven to be very effective to
solve inverse problems in many computer vision applications. To learn such
models, the data samples are often clustered using the K-means algorithm with
the Euclidean distance as a dissimilarity metric. However, the Euclidean
distance may not always be a good dissimilarity measure for comparing data
samples lying on a manifold. In this paper, we propose two algorithms for
determining a local subset of training samples from which a good local model
can be computed for reconstructing a given input test sample, where we take
into account the underlying geometry of the data. The first algorithm, called
Adaptive Geometry-driven Nearest Neighbor search (AGNN), is an adaptive scheme
which can be seen as an out-of-sample extension of the replicator graph
clustering method for local model learning. The second method, called
Geometry-driven Overlapping Clusters (GOC), is a less complex nonadaptive
alternative for training subset selection. The proposed AGNN and GOC methods
are evaluated in image super-resolution, deblurring and denoising applications
and shown to outperform spectral clustering, soft clustering, and geodesic

Gaze-Based Human-Robot Interaction by the Brunswick Model
We present a new paradigm for human-robot interaction based on social signal processing, and in particular on the Brunswick model. Originally, the Brunswick model copes with face-to-face dyadic interaction, assuming that the interactants are communicating through a continuous exchange of non verbal social signals, in addition to the spoken messages. Social signals have to be interpreted, thanks to a proper recognition phase that considers visual and audio information. The Brunswick model allows to quantitatively evaluate the quality of the interaction using statistical tools which measure how effective is the recognition phase. In this paper we cast this theory when one of the interactants is a robot; in this case, the recognition phase performed by the robot and the human have to be revised w.r.t. the original model.
