Curves on torus layers and coding for continuous alphabet sources

In this paper we consider the problem of transmitting a continuous alphabet discrete-time source over an AWGN channel. The design of good curves for this purpose relies on geometrical properties of spherical codes and projections of NN-dimensional lattices. We propose a constructive scheme based on a set of curves on the surface of a 2N-dimensional sphere and present comparisons with some previous works.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures. On projections of arbitrary lattices

In this paper we prove that given any two point lattices Λ1⊂Rn\Lambda_1 \subset \mathbb{R}^n and Λ2⊂Rn−k \Lambda_2 \subset \nobreak \mathbb{R}^{n-k}, there is a set of kk vectors vi∈Λ1\bm{v}_i \in \Lambda_1 such that Λ2\Lambda_2 is, up to similarity, arbitrarily close to the projection of Λ1\Lambda_1 onto the orthogonal complement of the subspace spanned by v1,…,vk\bm{v}_1, \ldots, \bm{v}_k. This result extends the main theorem of \cite{Sloane2} and has applications in communication theory.Comment: 11 page

New Techniques for the Modeling, Processing and Visualization of Surfaces and Volumes

With the advent of powerful 3D acquisition technology, there is a growing demand for the modeling, processing, and visualization of surfaces and volumes. The proposed methods must be efficient and robust, and they must be able to extract the essential structure of the data and to easily and quickly convey the most significant information to a human observer. Independent of the specific nature of the data, the following fundamental problems can be identified: shape reconstruction from discrete samples, data analysis, and data compression. This thesis presents several novel solutions to these problems for surfaces (Part I) and volumes (Part II). For surfaces, we adopt the well-known triangle mesh representation and develop new algorithms for discrete curvature estimation, detection of feature lines, and line-art rendering (Chapter 3), for connectivity encoding (Chapter 4), and for topology preserving compression of 2D vector fields (Chapter 5). For volumes, that are often given as discrete samples, we base our approach for reconstruction and visualization on the use of new trivariate spline spaces on a certain tetrahedral partition. We study the properties of the new spline spaces (Chapter 7) and present efficient algorithms for reconstruction and visualization by iso-surface rendering for both, regularly (Chapter 8) and irregularly (Chapter 9) distributed data samples

    Multiple beam antenna/switch system study

In the study of the Multiple Beam Antenna/Switch for the space to ground link (SGL) uplink and downlink services, several issues related to system engineering, antenna, transmit/receive, and switch systems were addressed and the results are provided. Bandwidth allocation at Ku band is inadequate to serve the data rate requirements for the forward and return services. Rain and depolarization effects at EHF, especially at Ka band, pose a significant threat to the link availabilities at heavy rain areas. Hardware induced effects such as the nonlinear characteristics of the power amplifier may necessitate the use of linearizers and limiters. It is also important to identify the components that are susceptible to the space radiation effects and shield or redesign them with rad-hard technologies for meeting the requirements of the space environment
