    Current Research: Current Research in the Upper McGee Creek Drainage, Oklahoma

    In recent years the Choctaw Nation has acquired a roughly 80 square mile ranch in the western edge of the Winding Stair Mountains of southeastern Oklahoma. The land is currently a working ranch and timber management area. Choctaw Forestry manages timber activities and range management with the intention of returning the land to an oak savanna setting. Active logging of pine and selected hardwoods and on-going controlled surface burns are included in Forestry activity on the ranch. The project is supported by the Choctaw Nation Historic Preservation Department, which is responsible for the inventory and protection of the cultural resources found on the property. Archeological surveys were conducted in the McGee Creek Reservoir area in the 1970s and 1980s and a wide range of significant cultural resources were located in the reservoir area, less than 10 miles south of the ranch. Only one previous survey was conducted on the ranch property, by the Oklahoma Conservation Commission in the 1980s ahead of construction of an upland flood control reservoir. Significant archeological resources were recorded. Since very little was known about the ranch property itself, it was presumed that this portion of the McGee Creek drainage would also have a similar archeological importance

    We use statistical analysis and machine learning to interpret the GDV coronas of fruits and human’s fingers in order to verify two hypotheses: (A) the GDV images contain useful information about the object/patient and (B) the human bioelectromagnetic field can be influenced by some outside factors. We performed several independent studies, three of which we here briefly describe: (a) recording coronas of berries of different grapevines, (b) detecting the influence of drinking the tap water from ordinary glass and energetic glass K2000, and (c) detecting the influence of natural energy source in Tunjice near Kamnik, Slovenia on the human bioelectromagnetic field. All three studies, as well as some other studies described elsewhere, gave significant results and therefore support both hypotheses

    Common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) status in the central and southern Mediterranean around the Maltese Islands

    Since 1997, a conservation biology research project focusing on cetaceans in the Central and Southern Mediterranean Sea around the Maltese Islands has managed to increase accurate information of the various species inhabiting these waters (Vella, 1998; 2000a; 2000b). Among the species studied, this paper focuses upon the common dolphin, Delphinus delphis in the Mediterranean. This species/subpopulation rated as endangered in the Mediterranean (EN A2abc - IUCN 2003 - http://www.redlist.org) necessitates particular conservation assessment, monitoring and management planning in this region (IUCN, 2003; Reeves et al., 2003). This ongoing longterm research therefore also aims at contributing valuable information (Vella, 2000b) required in relation to the Agreement on the Conservation of Cetaceans of the Black Sea, Mediterranean Sea and Contiguous Atlantic Area (ACCOBAMS). Although Mediterranean cetaceans are legally protected by Maltese law, through specific legal notices, this field conservation research is, to date, the only scientific effort around the Maltese Islands that may furnish the required details for local conservation measures to be implemented. Common dolphin distribution, abundance, habitat preference, behaviour, and associations with fisheries that are exploited in the same area are among the parameters studied. Marine habitat degradation and resource over-exploitation are considerations that need to be addressed since both may affect cetacean survival in the region. A literature search was conducted which surveyed the major abstract publications such as the International Aerospace Abstracts, the Meteorological and Geoastrophysical Abstracts, and the Scientific and Technical Aerospace Reports. In addition, NASA and DOT computer literature searches were run; and NASA, NOAA, and FAA research project managers were requested to provide writeups on their ongoing research

    A review of the current research of cavitation in fluid films is presented. Phenomena and experimental observations include gaseous cavitation, vapor cavitation, and gas entrainment. Cavitation in flooded, starved, and dynamically loaded journal bearings, as well as squeeze films are reviewed. Observations of cavitation damage in bearings and the possibility of cavitation between parallel plates with microasperities were discussed. The transcavity fluid transport process, meniscus motion and geometry or form of the film during rupture, and reformation were summarized. Performance effects were related to heat transfer models in the cavitated region and hysteresis influence on rotor dynamics coefficients. A number of cavitation algorithms was presented together with solution procedures using the finite difference and finite element methods. Although Newtonian fluids were assumed in most of the discussions, the effect of non-Newtonian fluids on cavitation was also discussed

    Modulator Therapy for Cystic Fibrosis: An Exploration of Current Research

    Developing a drug therapy that addresses the root cause of cystic fibrosis (CF) by increasing CFTR protein levels has long been a research challenge. After genetic therapy failed because a suitable delivery system could not be found, researchers began searching for small organic molecules that could act as chaperones for CFTR. These molecules, known as modulators, allowed CFTR to be assembled correctly and function similarly to wild type CFTR. Since 2012, four modulator drugs have been developed, tested, and approved by the FDA. In October 2019, Trikafta was approved as the first triple-combination modulator drug and has completely revolutionized CF therapy.
