    Mobile Netzwerke der fĂŒnften Generation zeichen sich aus durch vielfĂ€ltigen Anforderungen und Einsatzszenarien. Drei unterschiedliche AnwendungsfĂ€lle sind hierbei besonders relevant: 1) Industrie-Applikationen fordern EchtzeitfunkĂŒbertragungen mit besonders niedrigen Ausfallraten. 2) Internet-of-things-Anwendungen erfordern die Anbindung einer Vielzahl von verteilten Sensoren. 3) Die Datenraten fĂŒr Anwendung wie z.B. der Übermittlung von Videoinhalten sind massiv gestiegen. Diese zum Teil gegensĂ€tzlichen Erwartungen veranlassen Forscher und Ingenieure dazu, neue Konzepte und Technologien fĂŒr zukĂŒnftige drahtlose Kommunikationssysteme in Betracht zu ziehen. Ziel ist es, aus einer Vielzahl neuer Ideen vielversprechende Kandidatentechnologien zu identifizieren und zu entscheiden, welche fĂŒr die Umsetzung in zukĂŒnftige Produkte geeignet sind. Die Herausforderungen, diese Anforderungen zu erreichen, liegen jedoch jenseits der Möglichkeiten, die eine einzelne Verarbeitungsschicht in einem drahtlosen Netzwerk bieten kann. Daher mĂŒssen mehrere Forschungsbereiche Forschungsideen gemeinsam nutzen. Diese Arbeit beschreibt daher eine Plattform als Basis fĂŒr zukĂŒnftige experimentelle Erforschung von drahtlosen Netzwerken unter reellen Bedingungen. Es werden folgende drei Aspekte nĂ€her vorgestellt: ZunĂ€chst erfolgt ein Überblick ĂŒber moderne Prototypen und Testbed-Lösungen, die auf großes Interesse, Nachfrage, aber auch Förderungsmöglichkeiten stoßen. Allerdings ist der Entwicklungsaufwand nicht unerheblich und richtet sich stark nach den gewĂ€hlten Eigenschaften der Plattform. Der Auswahlprozess ist jedoch aufgrund der Menge der verfĂŒgbaren Optionen und ihrer jeweiligen (versteckten) Implikationen komplex. Daher wird ein Leitfaden anhand verschiedener Beispiele vorgestellt, mit dem Ziel Erwartungen im Vergleich zu den fĂŒr den Prototyp erforderlichen AufwĂ€nden zu bewerten. Zweitens wird ein flexibler, aber echtzeitfĂ€higer Signalprozessor eingefĂŒhrt, der auf einer software-programmierbaren Funkplattform lĂ€uft. Der Prozessor ermöglicht die Rekonfiguration wichtiger Parameter der physikalischen Schicht wĂ€hrend der Laufzeit, um eine Vielzahl moderner Wellenformen zu erzeugen. Es werden vier Parametereinstellungen 'LLC', 'WiFi', 'eMBB' und 'IoT' vorgestellt, um die Anforderungen der verschiedenen drahtlosen Anwendungen widerzuspiegeln. Diese werden dann zur Evaluierung der die in dieser Arbeit vorgestellte Implementierung herangezogen. Drittens wird durch die EinfĂŒhrung einer generischen Testinfrastruktur die Einbeziehung externer Partner aus der Ferne ermöglicht. Das Testfeld kann hier fĂŒr verschiedenste Experimente flexibel auf die Anforderungen drahtloser Technologien zugeschnitten werden. Mit Hilfe der Testinfrastruktur wird die Leistung des vorgestellten Transceivers hinsichtlich Latenz, erreichbarem Durchsatz und Paketfehlerraten bewertet. The goal is to identify promising candidate technologies among a vast number of new ideas and to decide, which are suitable for implementation in future products. However, the challenges to achieve those demands are beyond the capabilities a single processing layer in a wireless network can offer. Therefore, several research domains have to collaboratively exploit research ideas. This thesis presents a platform to provide a base for future applied research on wireless networks. Firstly, by giving an overview of state-of-the-art prototypes and testbed solutions. Secondly by introducing a flexible, yet real-time physical layer signal processor running on a software defined radio platform. The processor enables reconfiguring important parameters of the physical layer during run-time in order to create a multitude of modern waveforms. Thirdly, by introducing a generic test infrastructure, which can be tailored to prototype diverse wireless technology and which is remotely accessible in order to invite new ideas by third parties.     Demonstrating Controlled Change for Autonomous Space Vehicles

    Recent research discusses concepts of infield changes to overcome the drawbacks of conventional lab-based system design processes. In this paper, we evaluate the concept of controlled change by applying it to a demonstration of a potential future space exploration scenario with mobile robots. The robots are capable of executing several image computations for exploration, object detection and pose estimation, which can be allocated to both FPGA-and processor resources of a System-on-Chip. The demonstrator addresses three scenarios which cover application-, environment-, and platform change. The system adapts itself to any of the named changes. This capability can increase the autonomy of future space missions. Exemplary, the demonstrator executes adaption of applications during operation to fulfill the mission goals, adaption of reliability under changing environment conditions, and adaption to sensor failure

    Medium Access Control Layer Implementation on Field Programmable Gate Array Board for Wireless Networks

    Triple play services are playing an important role in modern telecommunications systems. Nowadays, more researchers are engaged in investigating the most efficient approaches to integrate these services at a reduced level of operation costs. Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) boards have been found as the most suitable platform to test new protocols as they offer high levels of flexibility and customization. This thesis focuses on implementing a framework for the Triple Play Time Division Multiple Access (TP-TDMA) protocol using the Xilinx FPGA Virtex-5 board. This flexible framework design offers network systems engineers a reconfigiirable platform for triple-play systems development. In this work, MicorBlaze is used to perform memory and connectivity tests aiming to ensure the establishment of the connectivity as well as board’s processor stability. Two different approaches are followed to achieve TP-TDMA implementa­tion: systematic and conceptual. In the systematic approach, a bottom-to-top design is chosen where four subsystems are built with various components. Each component is then tested individually to investigate its response. On the other hand, the concep­tual approach is designed with only two components, in which one of them is created with the help of Xilinx Integrated Software Environment (ISE) Core Generator. The system is integrated and then tested to check its overall response. In summary, the work of this thesis is divided into three sections. The first section presents a testing method for Virtex-5 board using MicroBlaze soft processor. The following two sections concentrate on implementing the TP-TDMA protocol on the board by using two design approaches: one based on designing each component from scratch, while the other one focuses more on the system’s broader picture

    SDN enabled dynamically reconfigurable high capacity optical access architecture for converged services

    Dynamically reconfigurable time-division multiplexing (TDM) dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) long-reach passive optical networks (PONs) can support the reduction of nodes and network interfaces by enabling a fully meshed flat optical core. In this paper we demonstrate the flexibility of the TDM-DWDM PON architecture, which can enable the convergence of multiple service types on a single physical layer. Heterogeneous services and modulation formats, i.e. residential 10G PON channels, business 100G dedicated channel and wireless fronthaul, are demonstrated co-existing on the same long reach TDM-DWDM PON system, with up to 100km reach, 512 users and emulated system load of 40 channels, employing amplifier nodes with either erbium doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) or semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs). For the first time end-to-end software defined networking (SDN) management of the access and core network elements is also implemented and integrated with the PON physical layer in order to demonstrate two service use cases: a fast protection mechanism with end-to-end service restoration in the case of a primary link failure; and dynamic wavelength allocation (DWA) in response to an increased traffic demand

    Wireless Sensor Networks Node with Remote HW/SW Reconfiguration Capabilities

    The inclusion of reconfigurable HW in nodes for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) is not a common issue in the framework of the design of state of the art HW platforms for WSNs, mainly due to its high power consumption. But, on the other hand, reconfigurable logic as FPGAs can contribute to improve the system performance by providing not only HW acceleration as it has already been demonstrated by several research groups, but also the possibility of node HW updates after WSN deployment. This paper presents an entire working flow to generate, remotely configure and reconfigure the HW and SW in a reconfigurable node platform for WSNs. The presented reconfiguration working flow targets the custom HW platform designed at CEI (Centro de Electronica Industrial), where the processing is carried out by both a microcontroller and a partially reconfigurable Xilinx FPGA.     Enabling autonomous and Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operation of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in the Very Low Level (VLL) airspace requires further advancement of technologies such as sensing the environment or secure and reliable communication. This paper addresses these challenges by presenting solutions developed within the project Airborne Data Collection on Resilient System Architectures (ADACORSA). Here, findings from cross-sectional areas such as the automotive industry are being further enhanced to fulfill the demands of aviation, in particular for use in the UAV domain. The system architecture utilizes low complexity baseband processing modules. The byte/frame synchronization technique is designed to provide a high value of preamble detection probability and a very small value of the false detection probability. Conventional Reed-Solomon RS (255, 239) coding is used for Channel Forward Error Correction (FEC). Good communication link quality and Bit Error Rate (BER) results at 875 Mbps are achieved with directional antennas
