    Network operators are nowadays upgrading their access networks to cope with the increasing number of users and the increasing bandwidth required by services. However, cost plays a crucial factor. In order to decide which next generation access network will be implemented, an accurate cost evaluation should be performed. This evaluation requires a total cost of ownership model including a detailed model of the most costly operational processes: fault management and customer provisioning. These models help identifying the most costly sub-processes, where network providers should improve their cost efficiency. This paper presents detailed models for these operational processes and gives an approach to use them for estimating future operational costs

    Beam search algorithms for the early/tardy scheduling problem with release dates

    In this paper we consider the single machine earliness/tardiness scheduling problem with di?erent release dates and no unforced idle time. We present several heuristic algorithms based on the beam search technique. These algorithms include classical beam search procedures, with both priority and total cost evaluation functions, as well as the filtered and recovering variants. Both priority evaluation functions and problem-specific properties were considered for the filtering step used in the filtered and recovering beam search heuristics. Extensive preliminary tests were performed to determine appropriate values for the parameters used by each algorithm. The computational results show that the recovering beam search algorithms outperform their filtered counterparts in both solution quality and computational requirements, while the priority-based filtering procedure proves superior to the rules-based alternative. The beam search procedure with a total cost evaluation function provides very good results, but is computationally expensive and can therefore only be applied to small or medium size instances. The recovering algorithm is quite close in solution quality and is significantly faster, so it can be used to solve even large instances.scheduling, early/tardy, beam search, heuristics

    Introducing process-aware information systems (PAIS) in enterprises (e.g., workflow management systems, case handling systems) is associated with high costs. Though cost evaluation has received considerable attention in software engineering for many years, it is difficult to apply existing evaluation approaches to PAIS. This difficulty particularly stems from the inability of these techniques to deal with the complex interplay of the many technological, organizational and project-driven factors which emerge in the context of PAIS engineering projects. In response to this problem this paper proposes an approach which utilizes simulation models for investigating costs related to PAIS engineering projects.     Botnet Forensic Investigation Techniques and Cost Evaluation

    Botnets are responsible for a large percentage of damages and criminal activity on the Internet. They have shifted attacks from push activities to pull techniques for the distribution of malwares and continue to provide economic advantages to the exploiters at the expense of other legitimate Internet service users. In our research we asked; what is the cost of the procedural steps for forensically investigating a Botnet attack? The research method applies investigation guidelines provided by other researchers and evaluates these guidelines in terms of the cost to a digital forensic investigator. We conclude that investigation of Botnet attacks is both possible and procedurally feasible for a forensic investigator; but that scope management is critical for controlling the cost of investigation.
