    Deep Learning based Recommender System: A Survey and New Perspectives

    With the ever-growing volume of online information, recommender systems have been an effective strategy to overcome such information overload. The utility of recommender systems cannot be overstated, given its widespread adoption in many web applications, along with its potential impact to ameliorate many problems related to over-choice. In recent years, deep learning has garnered considerable interest in many research fields such as computer vision and natural language processing, owing not only to stellar performance but also the attractive property of learning feature representations from scratch. The influence of deep learning is also pervasive, recently demonstrating its effectiveness when applied to information retrieval and recommender systems research. Evidently, the field of deep learning in recommender system is flourishing. This article aims to provide a comprehensive review of recent research efforts on deep learning based recommender systems. More concretely, we provide and devise a taxonomy of deep learning based recommendation models, along with providing a comprehensive summary of the state-of-the-art.     Recommending Structured Objects: Paths and Sets

    Recommender systems have been widely adopted in industry to help people find the most appropriate items to purchase or consume from the increasingly large collection of available resources (e.g., books, songs and movies). Conventional recommendation techniques follow the approach of ``ranking all possible options and pick the top'', which can work effectively for single item recommendation but fall short when the item in question has internal structures. For example, a travel trajectory with a sequence of points-of-interest or a music playlist with a set of songs. Such structured objects pose critical challenges to recommender systems due to the intractability of ranking all possible candidates. This thesis study the problem of recommending structured objects, in particular, the recommendation of path (a sequence of unique elements) and set (a collection of distinct elements). We study the problem of recommending travel trajectories in a city, which is a typical instance of path recommendation. We propose methods that combine learning to rank and route planning techniques for efficient trajectory recommendation. Another contribution of this thesis is to develop the structured recommendation approach for path recommendation by substantially modifying the loss function, the learning and inference procedures of structured support vector machines. A novel application of path decoding techniques helps us achieve efficient learning and recommendation. Additionally, we investigate the problem of recommending a set of songs to form a playlist as an example of the set recommendation problem. We propose to jointly learn user representations by employing the multi-task learning paradigm, and a key result of equivalence between bipartite ranking and binary classification enables efficient learning of our set recommendation method. Extensive evaluations on real world datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed approaches for path and set recommendation

    Probabilistic Graphical Models for Credibility Analysis in Evolving Online Communities

    One of the major hurdles preventing the full exploitation of information from online communities is the widespread concern regarding the quality and credibility of user-contributed content. Prior works in this domain operate on a static snapshot of the community, making strong assumptions about the structure of the data (e.g., relational tables), or consider only shallow features for text classification. To address the above limitations, we propose probabilistic graphical models that can leverage the joint interplay between multiple factors in online communities --- like user interactions, community dynamics, and textual content --- to automatically assess the credibility of user-contributed online content, and the expertise of users and their evolution with user-interpretable explanation. To this end, we devise new models based on Conditional Random Fields for different settings like incorporating partial expert knowledge for semi-supervised learning, and handling discrete labels as well as numeric ratings for fine-grained analysis. This enables applications such as extracting reliable side-effects of drugs from user-contributed posts in healthforums, and identifying credible content in news communities. Online communities are dynamic, as users join and leave, adapt to evolving trends, and mature over time. To capture this dynamics, we propose generative models based on Hidden Markov Model, Latent Dirichlet Allocation, and Brownian Motion to trace the continuous evolution of user expertise and their language model over time. This allows us to identify expert users and credible content jointly over time, improving state-of-the-art recommender systems by explicitly considering the maturity of users.     A Hierarchical Attention-based Contrastive Learning Method for Micro Video Popularity Prediction

    Micro videos popularity prediction (MVPP) has recently attracted widespread research interests given the increasing prevalence of video-based social platforms. However, previous studies have overlooked the unique patterns between popular and unpopular videos and the interactions between asynchronous features different data dimensions. To address this, we propose a novel hierarchical attention contrastive learning method named HACL, which extracts explainable representation features, learns their asynchronous interactions from both temporal and spatial levels, and separates the positive and negative embeddings identities. This reveals video popularity in a contrastive and interrelated view, and thus can be responsible for a better MVPP. Dual neural networks account for separate positive and negative patterns via contrastive learning. To obtain the temporal-wise interaction coefficients, we propose a Hadamard-product based attention approach to optimize the trainable attention-map matrices. Results from our experiments on a TikTok micro video dataset show that HACL outperforms benchmarks and provides insightful managerial implications

    Probabilistic Personalized Recommendation Models For Heterogeneous Social Data

    Content recommendation has risen to a new dimension with the advent of platforms like Twitter, Facebook, FriendFeed, Dailybooth, and Instagram. Although this uproar of data has provided us with a goldmine of real-world information, the problem of information overload has become a major barrier in developing predictive models. Therefore, the objective of this The- sis is to propose various recommendation, prediction and information retrieval models that are capable of leveraging such vast heterogeneous content. More specifically, this Thesis focuses on proposing models based on probabilistic generative frameworks for the following tasks: (a) recommending backers and projects in Kickstarter crowdfunding domain and (b) point of interest recommendation in Foursquare. Through comprehensive set of experiments over a variety of datasets, we show that our models are capable of providing practically useful results for recommendation and information retrieval tasks

    Why alternative teenagers self-harm: exploring the link between non-suicidal self-injury, attempted suicide and adolescent identity

    Background: The term ‘self-harm’ encompasses both attempted suicide and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). Specific adolescent subpopulations such as ethnic or sexual minorities, and more controversially, those who identify as ‘Alternative’ (Goth, Emo) have been proposed as being more likely to self-harm, while other groups such as ‘Jocks’ are linked with protective coping behaviours (for example exercise). NSSI has autonomic (it reduces negative emotions) and social (it communicates distress or facilitates group ‘bonding’) functions. This study explores the links between such aspects of self-harm, primarily NSSI, and youth subculture.<p></p> Methods: An anonymous survey was carried out of 452 15 year old German school students. Measures included: identification with different youth cultures, i.e. Alternative (Goth, Emo, Punk), Nerd (academic) or Jock (athletic); social background, e.g. socioeconomic status; and experience of victimisation. Self-harm (suicide and NSSI) was assessed using Self-harm Behavior Questionnaire and the Functional Assessment of Self-Mutilation (FASM).<p></p> Results: An “Alternative” identity was directly (r ≈ 0.3) and a “Jock” identity inversely (r ≈ -0.1) correlated with self-harm. “Alternative” teenagers self-injured more frequently (NSSI 45.5% vs. 18.8%), repeatedly self-injured, and were 4–8 times more likely to attempt suicide (even after adjusting for social background) than their non-Alternative peers. They were also more likely to self-injure for autonomic, communicative and social reasons than other adolescents.<p></p> Conclusions: About half of ‘Alternative’ adolescents’ self-injure, primarily to regulate emotions and communicate distress. However, a minority self-injure to reinforce their group identity, i.e. ‘To feel more a part of a group’
