    Dragon-kings: mechanisms, statistical methods and empirical evidence

    This introductory article presents the special Discussion and Debate volume "From black swans to dragon-kings, is there life beyond power laws?" published in Eur. Phys. J. Special Topics in May 2012. We summarize and put in perspective the contributions into three main themes: (i) mechanisms for dragon-kings, (ii) detection of dragon-kings and statistical tests and (iii) empirical evidence in a large variety of natural and social systems. Overall, we are pleased to witness significant advances both in the introduction and clarification of underlying mechanisms and in the development of novel efficient tests that demonstrate clear evidence for the presence of dragon-kings in many systems. However, this positive view should be balanced by the fact that this remains a very delicate and difficult field, if only due to the scarcity of data as well as the extraordinary important implications with respect to hazard assessment, risk control and predictability.Comment: 20 page

    IntroductionTo estimate occupational exposures to electromagnetic fields (EMF) for the INTEROCC study, a database of source-based measurements extracted from published and unpublished literature resources had been previously constructed. The aim of the current work was to summarize these measurements into a source-exposure matrix (SEM), accounting for their quality and relevance.MethodsA novel methodology for combining available measurements was developed, based on order statistics and log-normal distribution characteristics. Arithmetic and geometric means, and estimates of variability and maximum exposure were calculated by EMF source, frequency band and dosimetry type. Mean estimates were weighted by our confidence on the pooled measurements.ResultsThe SEM contains confidence-weighted mean and maximum estimates for 312 EMF exposure sources (from 0 Hz to 300 GHz). Operator position geometric mean electric field levels for RF sources ranged between 0.8 V/m (plasma etcher) and 320 V/m (RF sealer), while magnetic fields ranged from 0.02 A/m (speed radar) to 0.6 A/m (microwave heating).     Quantum-Assisted Learning of Hardware-Embedded Probabilistic Graphical Models

    Mainstream machine-learning techniques such as deep learning and probabilistic programming rely heavily on sampling from generally intractable probability distributions. There is increasing interest in the potential advantages of using quantum computing technologies as sampling engines to speed up these tasks or to make them more effective. However, some pressing challenges in state-of-the-art quantum annealers have to be overcome before we can assess their actual performance. The sparse connectivity, resulting from the local interaction between quantum bits in physical hardware implementations, is considered the most severe limitation to the quality of constructing powerful generative unsupervised machine-learning models. Here we use embedding techniques to add redundancy to data sets, allowing us to increase the modeling capacity of quantum annealers. We illustrate our findings by training hardware-embedded graphical models on a binarized data set of handwritten digits and two synthetic data sets in experiments with up to 940 quantum bits. Our model can be trained in quantum hardware without full knowledge of the effective parameters specifying the corresponding quantum Gibbs-like distribution; therefore, this approach avoids the need to infer the effective temperature at each iteration, speeding up learning; it also mitigates the effect of noise in the control parameters, making it robust to deviations from the reference Gibbs distribution. Our approach demonstrates the feasibility of using quantum annealers for implementing generative models, and it provides a suitable framework for benchmarking these quantum technologies on machine-learning-related tasks.Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures.     From June 2017 to June 2019, 291 cases of Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia (SAB) were evaluated retrospectively. Patient baseline characteristics, clinical presentations, empiric and targeted treatment, and clinical outcomes were assessed. Our study aimed to evaluate the adherence to a designated SAB care bundle and to assess whether proper adherence improved patient survival. Furthermore, as data for spa type distributions in MSSA-SAB are scarce for Germany, we aimed to describe circulating spa types and spa Clonal Complexes (spa CC) in our epidemiological setting

    Long swings in Japan’s current account and in the yen

    The yen has experienced several big swings over recent decades. This paper argues that the fluctuations of the Japanese exchange rate resulted mainly from corresponding movements in the current account, which affected the demand for yen relative to other currencies. The paper builds a vector error correction model for the exchange rate and the current account, based on the idea that the exchange rate and its economic fundamental do not move too far apart over time. In addition, the model allows for a Markov-switching stochastic trend in the current account. Regime changes occur at uncertain dates, possibly in response to exchange rate changes. Bayesian estimation proceeds using an innovative Gibbs-sampling procedure. The empirical results suggest that recurrent structural breaks in the yen’s fundamentals account for the large fluctuations of the Japanese exchange rat

    Quality of life measurement clarifies the cost-effectiveness of Helicobacter pylori eradication in peptic ulcer disease and uninvestigated dyspepsia 1

    Previous economic studies of Helicobacter pylori eradication in dyspepsia and peptic ulcer disease have not measured quality of life using utilities (preference probabilities), which are needed to compare the cost-effectiveness of such treatment to other health care interventions. The goals of this study were to measure quality of life in patients with dyspepsia or peptic ulcer and apply these measurements to published models of disease management to determine cost-effectiveness in dollars per quality-adjusted life year (QALY) gained. Methods : Utilities for dyspepsia and peptic ulcer disease were measured in adult patients (n = 73) on chronic acid suppression for peptic ulcer or ulcer-like dyspepsia. Median utility values were applied to the results of published cost-effectiveness analyses and a previously validated dyspepsia model. Cost-utility ratios for early H. pylori eradication in uninvestigated dyspepsia and peptic ulcer disease were then computed. Results : The total disutility, or lost quality of life, for an ulcer was 0.11 QALY, of which 0.09 QALY was attributed to dyspeptic symptoms. After these results were incorporated into published studies, cost-utility ratios for ulcer treatment varied from 3,100to3,100 to 12,500 per QALY gained, whereas estimates for uninvestigated dyspepsia management ranged from 26,800to26,800 to 59,400 per QALY. Sensitivity analyses indicated a range of 1,300to1,300 to 27,300 per QALY for management of duodenal ulcer and 15,000to15,000 to 129,700 per QALY for dyspepsia. Conclusions: Strategies that emphasize early H. pylori eradication were cost-effective for patients with peptic ulcer and possibly cost-effective for patients with uninvestigated dyspepsia, relative to other medical interventions.     Communities in temporal networks: from theoretical underpinnings to real-life applications

    Static aggregations of network activity can unravel attributes of the complex systems they represent. However, they fall short when the structure of the systems changes over time. In some cases, changes are sluggish, such as in power grids, where lines enjoy a lengthy temporal permanence. In others, a high frequency of change is observed, such as on a network of online messages, social contacts, pathogen transmission or ball passing in a soccer game. In these cases, reducing what is inherently a temporal network to a static one, leads necessarily to a loss of information, such as causal relationships, precedence or reachability rules. Temporal networks are thus the main subject of this thesis, centered on the study of network evolution from the point of view of its clusters as significant meso-structures. The thesis has two interrelated parts. In the first, theoretical challenges are addressed and original algorithms, methods and tools are developed that can further the study of network theory. In the second, these developments are applied to the analysis of team invasion sports. A measurement of game dynamics was created based on a temporal network representation of a match, with nodes clustered by spatial proximity. These measurements were found to correlate with match events of known dynamics. Moreover, they reveal unique, multi-level, aspects of the game, from the individual players contributions, to the clusters of interacting players, to their teams and their matches, which is useful for game analysis, training and strategy development.As agregações estáticas das ligações de uma rede podem revelar atributos dos sistemas complexos que representam. Todavia, são insuficientes quando a estrutura dos sistemas se altera com o tempo. Em alguns casos, as transformações são lentas, tais como em redes de transmissão de eletricidade em que as linhas se mantêm inalteráveis por largos períodos de tempo. Noutras, regista-se uma taxa elevada de mudança, como por exemplo numa rede de mensagens em linha, contatos sociais, transmissão de patógenos ou passes num jogo de futebol. Nestes casos, reduzir o que é inerentemente uma rede temporal a uma rede estática, leva a uma perda de informação, tais como relações causais, regras de precedência ou de acessibilidade. Redes temporais são assim o tema desta tese, centrada nos seus agrupamentos, como meso-estruturas significantes. A tese está dividida em duas partes. Na primeira, são considerados problemas teóricos, e são desenvolvidos algoritmos, métodos e ferramentas que avançam o estudo da teoria de redes. Na segunda, estes desenvolvimentos são aplicados à análise de jogos desportivos coletivos de invasão. Foi criada uma medida de dinâmica do jogo, baseada na representação da partida através de uma rede temporal de nós agrupados por proximidade espacial. Os resultados obtidos correlacionam-se com eventos do jogo de dinâmica conhecida. Adicionalmente, esta medida revela aspetos únicos e multi-nível da dinâmica do jogo, desde a contribuição individual do jogador, até aos agrupamentos de jogadores, da equipa e das partidas, útil para a análise do jogo, de treino e de desenvolvimento estratégico
