In order to supply their energy requirements, the consumers have changed the paradigm by integrating renewable energy sources to their power grid. Therefore, consumers become prosumers in which they internally generate and consume energy looking for an autonomous operation. This paper proposes an energy management system for coordinating the operation of distributed household prosumers. It was found that better performance is achieved when cooperative operation with other prosumers in a neighborhood environment is achieved. Simulation and experimental results validate the proposed strategy by comparing the performance of islanded prosumers with the operation in cooperative modePeer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

They rely on energy management systems to schedule optimally the distributed energy resources. Conventionally, many scheduling problems have been solved by using complex algorithms that, even so, do not consider the operation of the distributed energy resources. This paper presents the modeling and design of a modular energy management system and its integration to a grid-connected battery-based microgrid. The scheduling model is a power generation-side strategy, defined as a general mixed-integer linear programming by taking into account two stages for proper charging of the storage units. This model is considered as a deterministic problem that aims to minimize operating costs and promote self-consumption based on 24-hour ahead forecast data. The operation of the microgrid is complemented with a supervisory control stage that compensates any mismatch between the offline scheduling process and the real time microgrid operation. The proposal has been tested experimentally in a hybrid microgrid at the Microgrid Research Laboratory, Aalborg University.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

Power-Based Droop Control in DC Microgrids Enabling Seamless Disconnection From Upstream Grids

This paper proposes a local power-based droop controller for distributed energy resource converters in dc microgrids that are connected to upstream grids by grid-interface converters. During normal operation, the grid-interface converter imposes the microgrid bus voltage, and the proposed controller allows power flow regulation at distributed energy resource converters\u2019 output. On the other hand, during abnormal operation of the grid-interface converter (e.g., due to faults in the upstream grid), the proposed controller allows bus voltage regulation by droop control. Notably, the controller can autonomously convert from power flow control to droop control, without any need of bus voltage variation detection schemes or communication with other microgrid components, which enables seamless transitions between these two modes of operation. Considering distributed energy resource converters employing the power-based droop control, the operation modes of a single converter and of the whole microgrid are defined and investigated herein. The controller design is also introduced. Furthermore, the power sharing performance of this control approach is analyzed and compared with that of classical droop control. The experimental results from a laboratory-scale dc microgrid prototype are reported to show the final performances of the proposed power-based droop control

With the high penetration of renewable energy into the grid, power fluctuations and supply-demand power mismatch are becoming more prominent, which pose a great challenge for the power system to eliminate negative effects through demand side management (DSM). The flexible load, such as heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC) system, has a great potential to provide demand response services in the electricity grids. In this thesis, a comprehensive framework based on a forecasting-management optimization approach is proposed to coordinate multiple HVAC systems to deal with uncertainties from renewable energy resources and maximize the energy efficiency. In the forecasting stage, a hybrid model based on Multiple Aggregation Prediction Algorithm with exogenous variables (MAPAx)-Principal Components Analysis (PCA) is proposed to predict changes of local solar radiance, vy using the local observation dataset and real-time meteorological indexes acquired from the weather forecast spot. The forecast result is then compared with the statistical benchmark models and assessed by performance evaluation indexes. In the management stage, a novel distributed algorithm is developed to coordinate power consumption of HVAC systems by varying the compressors’ frequency to maintain the supply-demand balance. It demonstrates that the cost and capacity of energy storage systems can be curtailed, since HVACs can absorb excessive power generation. More importantly, the method addresses a consensus problem under a switching communication topology by using Lyapunov argument, which relaxes the communication requirement. In the optimization stage, a price-comfort optimization model regarding HVAC’s end users is formulated and a proportional-integral-derivative (PID)-based distributed algorithm is thus developed to minimize the customer’s total cost, whilst alleviating the global power imbalance. The end users are motivated to participate in energy trade through DSM scheme. Furthermore, the coordination scheme can be extended to accommodate battery energy storage systems (BESSs) and a hybrid BESS-HVAC system with increasing storage capacity is proved as a promising solution to enhance its selfregulation ability in a microgrid. Extensive case studies have been undertaken with the respective control strategies to investigate effectiveness of the algorithms under various scenarios. The techniques developed in this thesis has helped the partnership company of this project to develop their smart immersion heaters for the customers with minimum energy cost and maximum photovoltaic efficiency

Energy efficiency and consumers' role in the energy system are among the strategic research topics in power systems these days. Smart grids (SG) and, specifically, microgrids, are key tools for these purposes. This paper presents a three-stage strategy for energy management in a prosumer nanogrid. Firstly, energy monitoring is performed and time-space compression is applied as a tool for forecasting energy resources and power quality (PQ) indices; secondly, demand is managed, taking advantage of smart appliances (SA) to reduce the electricity bill; finally, energy storage systems (ESS) are also managed to better match the forecasted generation of each prosumer. Results show how these strategies can be coordinated to contribute to energy management in the prosumer nanogrid. A simulation test is included, which proves how effectively the prosumers' power converters track the power setpoints obtained from the proposed strategy.Spanish Agencia Estatal de Investigacion ; Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional

A Novel Cooperative Controller for Inverters of Smart Hybrid AC/DC Microgrids

This paper presents a novel cooperative control technique concerning fully-distributed AC/DC microgrids. Distributed generation based on inverters has two types, i.e., Current Source Inverter (CSI), also referred to as PQ inverter, and Voltage Source Inverter (VSI). Both inverter forms have a two-layer coordination mechanism. This paper proposes a design method for the digital Proportional-Resonant (PR) controller that regulates the current inside an inverter. The inverters will improve the voltage quality of the microgrid while maintaining the average voltage of buses at the same desired level. There is comprehensive detail on the computations specific to resonant and proportional gains and digital resonance path coefficients. The paper includes a digital PR controller design and its analysis in the frequency domain. The analysis is based on the w-domain. The main contribution of this paper is the proposed method, which not only focuses on the transient response but also improves the steady-state response which smoothens the voltage; furthermore, all inverters are effectively involved to increase the capacity of the microgrid for better power management. The suggested cooperative control technique is used on an IEEE 14-bus system having fully distributed communication. The convincing outcomes indicate that the suggested control technique is an effectual means of regulating the microgrid’s voltage to obtain an evener and steady voltage profile. The microgrid comprises distributed resources and is used as the primary element to analyse power flow and quality indicators associated with a smart grid. Lastly, numerical simulation observations are utilised for substantiating the recommended algorithm
