    Topology Synthesis of Compliant Systems with Embedded Actuators and Sensors.

    The basic premise of a compliant system is the integration of motion/force transmission via elastic deformation with embedded actuation and sensing. Current electromechanical systems are generally fashioned in the rigid-and-discrete paradigm where one first designs a rigid structure with mechanical joints and then adds actuators and sensors, with the design of controls only following as an afterthought. The objective of this research is a systems approach to synthesis of mechanism, structure, actuation, and sensing, thereby advancing from traditional mechanical design to automated compliant system design. In previous studies of compliant mechanisms and their synthesis, single-actuator mechanisms have primarily been considered, with the determination of the actuator’s type, orientation, size, and location occurring outside of the automated design synthesis, at the designer’s option. A new algorithmic framework is presented, in which structural topology and actuator/sensor placement are simultaneously synthesized for maximum energy efficiency and adaptive performance. Significantly, this is not a traditional ad hoc method; sensor and actuator placement affect structural topology and vice versa. The methods used include genetic algorithms, graph searches for connectivity, and multiple load cases implemented with linear finite ele¬ment analysis. Fundamental metrics for the inclusion of embedded components in a multifunctional compliant system are developed and investigated. Actuators, modeled as both force generators and structural compliant elements, are included as topol¬ogy variables in the optimization. The essential framework for the integration of controls with compliant mechanisms is established. Specifically, the concepts of controllability and observability, as redefined for compliant systems, are proven as a successful starting point for the design of multifunctional, adaptive systems. These concepts refer to the unique sys¬tem response for each component (actuator or sensor) it contains. Results are presented for several problems, focusing on the application of shape-morphing aircraft structures. Through examples and design studies, the metrics and the methodology demonstrate that multiple, optimally-placed components indeed offer performance benefits for mechanical systems, both in terms of efficiency and multifunctional execution. Finally, the extension of controllability to address the problem of single-point manipulation is performed to show the generalized use of the new methodology in benefitting the design of compliant systems.Ph.D.Mechanical EngineeringUniversity of Michigan, Horace H.     Neural Lyapunov Control

    We propose new methods for learning control policies and neural network Lyapunov functions for nonlinear control problems, with provable guarantee of stability. The framework consists of a learner that attempts to find the control and Lyapunov functions, and a falsifier that finds counterexamples to quickly guide the learner towards solutions. The procedure terminates when no counterexample is found by the falsifier, in which case the controlled nonlinear system is provably stable. The approach significantly simplifies the process of Lyapunov control design, provides end-to-end correctness guarantee, and can obtain much larger regions of attraction than existing methods such as LQR and SOS/SDP. We show experiments on how the new methods obtain high-quality solutions for challenging control problems.Comment: NeurIPS 201

    Robust control of redundantly actuated dynamical systems

    The eigenstructure assignment scheme for robust multivariable feedback control is extended to redundantly actuated dynamical systems. It is shown that an orthonormal set of close loop eigenvectors is always exactly assignable in the case of redundant actuation proving the inherent robustness in the control design methodology. A choice of close loop eigenvector set to minimize the feedback gain matrix is suggested. Partial Eigenstructure Assignment methodology is proposed for second order mechanical systems. A methodology for coordinated actuation of redundant actuator sets by a trained weighted minimum norm solution is presented. To apply the methodology to hyper-redundant actuator arrays, for application to smart actuator arrays, a novel adaptive discretization algorithm is proposed. The adaptive aggregation strategy, based on the physics of the system, introduces nodes, to optimize a performance index of the overall plant model. The dimensionality of the inputs thus reduces to a finite number, making it a candidate plant for control by the robust redundant control scheme. The adaptive aggregation together with robust redundant control methodology is demonstrated on a finite element model of a novel morphing wing.     Event and Time-Triggered Control Module Layers for Individual Robot Control Architectures of Unmanned Agricultural Ground Vehicles

    Automation in the agriculture sector has increased to an extent where the accompanying methods for unmanned field management are becoming more economically viable. This manifests in the industry’s recent presentation of conceptual cab-less machines that perform all field operations under the high-level task control of a single remote operator. A dramatic change in the overall workflow for field tasks that historically assumed the presence of a human in the immediate vicinity of the work is predicted. This shift in the entire approach to farm machinery work provides producers increased control and productivity over high-level tasks and less distraction from operating individual machine actuators and implements. The final implication is decreased mechanical complexity of the cab-less field machines from their manned counter types. An Unmanned Agricultural Ground Vehicle (UAGV) electric platform received a portable control module layer (CML) which was modular and able to accept higher-level mission commands while returning system states to high-level tasks. The simplicity of this system was shown by its entire implementation running on microcontrollers networked on a Time-Triggered Controller Area Network (TTCAN) bus. A basic form of user input and output was added to the system to demonstrate a simple instance of sub-system integration. In this work, all major levels of design and implementation are examined in detail, revealing the ‘why’ and ‘how’ of each subsystem. System design philosophy is highlighted from the beginning. A state-space feedback steering controller was implemented on the machine utilizing a basic steering model found in literature. Finally, system performance is evaluated from the perspectives of a number of disciplines including: embedded systems software design, control systems, and robot control architecture. Recommendations for formalized UAGV system modeling, estimation, and control are discussed for the continuation of research in simplified low-cost machines for in-field task automation. Additional recommendations for future time-triggered CML experiments in bus robustness and redundancy are discussed. The work presented is foundational in the shift from event-triggered communications towards time-triggered CMLs for unmanned agricultural machinery and is a front-to-back demonstration of time-triggered design.     Characterisation and State Estimation of Magnetic Soft Continuum Robots

    Minimally invasive surgery has become more popular as it leads to less bleeding, scarring, pain, and shorter recovery time. However, this has come with counter-intuitive devices and steep surgeon learning curves. Magnetically actuated Soft Continuum Robots (SCR) have the potential to replace these devices, providing high dexterity together with the ability to conform to complex environments and safe human interactions without the cognitive burden for the clinician. Despite considerable progress in the past decade in their development, several challenges still plague SCR hindering their full realisation. This thesis aims at improving magnetically actuated SCR by addressing some of these challenges, such as material characterisation and modelling, and sensing feedback and localisation. Material characterisation for SCR is essential for understanding their behaviour and designing effective modelling and simulation strategies. In this work, the material properties of commonly employed materials in magnetically actuated SCR, such as elastic modulus, hyper-elastic model parameters, and magnetic moment were determined. Additionally, the effect these parameters have on modelling and simulating these devices was investigated. Due to the nature of magnetic actuation, localisation is of utmost importance to ensure accurate control and delivery of functionality. As such, two localisation strategies for magnetically actuated SCR were developed, one capable of estimating the full 6 degrees of freedom (DOFs) pose without any prior pose information, and another capable of accurately tracking the full 6-DOFs in real-time with positional errors lower than 4~mm. These will contribute to the development of autonomous navigation and closed-loop control of magnetically actuated SCR

Generally, the criteria used to compare the performance of traditional serial robots and parallel robots are the workspace, the ratio between the payload and the robot mass, accuracy, and dynamic behaviour.
