openNowadays the development of the IoT framework and the resulting huge number of smart connected devices opens the door to exploit the presence of multiple smart nodes to accomplish a variety of tasks. Multimedia context awareness, together with the concept of ambient intelligence, is tightly related to the IoT framework, and it can be applied to a large number of smart scenarios. In this thesis, the aim is to study and analyze the role of context awareness in different applications related to smart mobile environments, such as future smart spaces and connected cities. Indeed, this research work focuses on different aspects of ambient intelligence, such as audio-awareness and wireless-awareness. In particular, this thesis tackles two main research topics: the first one, related to the framework of audio-awareness, concerns a multiple observations approach for smart speaker recognition in mobile environments; the second one, tied to the concept of wireless-awareness, regards Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) detection based on WiFi statistical fingerprint analysis.openXXXI CICLO - SC. In an ambient intelligence world, devices work in order to support people carrying out their everyday life activities in a natural way. Therefore, it is necessary to know the entities in the environment and to consider new interaction schemas with them. This paper proposes an autonomous and lively mechanism to refresh the context information while users interact with the environment using Near Field Communication technology. Context Cookies is the name of the mechanism that captures situation changes and provides awareness dynamically. In an ambient intelligence world, devices work in order to support people carrying out their everyday life activities in a natural way. Context-awareness emerges as an important element of future wireless systems. In particular, concepts like ambient intelligence and ubiquitous computing rely on context information in order to personalize services provided to their target users. However, security implications of employing context-awareness in computing systems are not well understood. Security challenges in context-aware systems include integrity, confidentiality and availability of context information, as well as target user's privacy. Another interesting and open question is to what extent availability of additional context information could be used in order to optimise and reconfigure security-related services

Deliberative Context-Aware Ambient Intelligence System for Assisted Living Homes

Monitoring wellbeing and stress is one of the problems covered by ambient intelligence, as stress is a significant cause of human illnesses directly affecting our emotional state. The primary aim was to propose a deliberation architecture for an ambient intelligence healthcare application. The architecture provides a plan for comforting stressed seniors suffering from negative emotions in an assisted living home and executes the plan considering the environment's dynamic nature. Literature was reviewed to identify the convergence between deliberation and ambient intelligence and the latter's latest healthcare trends. A deliberation function was designed to achieve context-aware dynamic human-robot interaction, perception, planning capabilities, reactivity, and context-awareness with regard to the environment. A number of experimental case studies in a simulated assisted living home scenario were conducted to demonstrate the approach's behavior and validity. The proposed methods were validated to show classification accuracy. The validation showed that the deliberation function has effectively achieved its deliberative objectives

Extending Ambient Intelligence to the Internet of Things: New Challenges for QoC Management

    Get PDF
International audienceQuality of Context (QoC) awareness is recognized as a key point for the success of context-aware computing solutions. At a time where the Internet of Things, Cloud Computing, and Ambient Intelligence paradigms bring together new opportunities for more complex context computation, the next generation of Multiscale Distributed Context Managers (MDCM) is facing new challenges concerning QoC management. This paper presents how our QoCIM framework can help application developers to manage the whole QoC life-cycle by providing genericity, openness and uniformity. Its usages are illustrated, both at design time and at runtime, in the case of an urban pollution context- and QoC-aware scenario

Improving an Ambient Intelligence Based Multi-Agent System for Alzheimer Health Care using Wireless Sensor Networks

This paper describes last improvements made on ALZ-MAS; an Ambient Intelligence based multi-agent system aimed at enhancing the assistance and health care for Alzheimer patients. The system makes use of several context-aware technologies that allow it to automatically obtain information from users and the environment in an evenly distributed way, focusing on the characteristics of ubiquity, awareness, intelligence, mobility, etc., all of which are concepts defined by Ambient Intelligence. Among these context-aware technologies we have Wireless Sensor Networks. In this sense, ALZ-MAS is currently being improved by the use of a new platform of ZigBee devices that provides the system with new telemonitoring and locating engine
