    A Survey on Audio-Video based Defect Detection through Deep Learning in Railway Maintenance

    Within Artificial Intelligence, Deep Learning (DL) represents a paradigm that has been showing unprecedented performance in image and audio processing by supporting or even replacing humans in defect and anomaly detection. The Railway sector is expected to benefit from DL applications, especially in predictive maintenance applications, where smart audio and video sensors can be leveraged yet kept distinct from safety-critical functions. Such separation is crucial, as it allows for improving system dependability with no impact on its safety certification. This is further supported by the development of DL in other transportation domains, such as automotive and avionics, opening for knowledge transfer opportunities and highlighting the potential of such a paradigm in railways. In order to summarize the recent state-of-the-art while inquiring about future opportunities, this paper reviews DL approaches for the analysis of data generated by acoustic and visual sensors in railway maintenance applications that have been published until August 31st, 2021. In this paper, the current state of the research is investigated and evaluated using a structured and systematic method, in order to highlight promising approaches and successful applications, as well as to identify available datasets, current limitations, open issues, challenges, and recommendations about future research directions

    Multi-Scale Hierarchical Conditional Random Field for Railway Electrification Scene Classification Using Mobile Laser Scanning Data

    With the recent rapid development of high-speed railway in many countries, precise inspection for railway electrification systems has become more significant to ensure safe railway operation. However, this time-consuming manual inspection is not satisfactory for the high-demanding inspection task, thus a safe, fast and automatic inspection method is required. With LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) data becoming more available, the accurate railway electrification scene understanding using LiDAR data becomes feasible towards automatic 3D precise inspection. This thesis presents a supervised learning method to classify railway electrification objects from Mobile Laser Scanning (MLS) data. First, a multi-range Conditional Random Field (CRF), which characterizes not only labeling homogeneity at a short range, but also the layout compatibility between different objects at a middle range in the probabilistic graphical model is implemented and tested. Then, this multi-range CRF model will be extended and improved into a hierarchical CRF model to consider multi-scale layout compatibility at full range. The proposed method is evaluated on a dataset collected in Korea with complex railway electrification systems environment. The experiment shows the effectiveness of proposed model

    Vision-based Monitoring System for High Quality TIG Welding

    The current study evaluates an automatic system for real-time arc welding quality assessment and defect detection. The system research focuses on the identification of defects that may arise during the welding process by analysing the occurrence of any changes in the visible spectrum of the weld pool and the surrounding area. Currently, the state-of-the-art is very simplistic, involving an operator observing the process continuously. The operator assessment is subjective, and the criteria of acceptance based solely on operator observations can change over time due to the fatigue leading to incorrect classification. Variations in the weld pool are the initial result of the chosen welding parameters and torch position and at the same time the very first indication of the resulting weld quality. The system investigated in this research study consists of a camera used to record the welding process and a processing unit which analyse the frames giving an indication of the quality expected. The categorisation is achieved by employing artificial neural networks and correlating the weld pool appearance with the resulting quality. Six categories denote the resulting quality of a weld for stainless steel and aluminium. The models use images to learn the correlation between the aspect of the weld pool and the surrounding area and the state of the weld as denoted by the six categories, similar to a welder categorisation. Therefore the models learn the probability distribution of images’ aspect over the categories considered

    Artificial Intelligence in Materials Science: Applications of Machine Learning to Extraction of Physically Meaningful Information from Atomic Resolution Microscopy Imaging

    Materials science is the cornerstone for technological development of the modern world that has been largely shaped by the advances in fabrication of semiconductor materials and devices. However, the Moore’s Law is expected to stop by 2025 due to reaching the limits of traditional transistor scaling. However, the classical approach has shown to be unable to keep up with the needs of materials manufacturing, requiring more than 20 years to move a material from discovery to market. To adapt materials fabrication to the needs of the 21st century, it is necessary to develop methods for much faster processing of experimental data and connecting the results to theory, with feedback flow in both directions. However, state-of-the-art analysis remains selective and manual, prone to human error and unable to handle large quantities of data generated by modern equipment. Recent advances in scanning transmission electron and scanning tunneling microscopies have allowed imaging and manipulation of materials on the atomic level, and these capabilities require development of automated, robust, reproducible methods.Artificial intelligence and machine learning have dealt with similar issues in applications to image and speech recognition, autonomous vehicles, and other projects that are beginning to change the world around us. However, materials science faces significant challenges preventing direct application of the such models without taking physical constraints and domain expertise into account.Atomic resolution imaging can generate data that can lead to better understanding of materials and their properties through using artificial intelligence methods. Machine learning, in particular combinations of deep learning and probabilistic modeling, can learn to recognize physical features in imaging, making this process automated and speeding up characterization. By incorporating the knowledge from theory and simulations with such frameworks, it is possible to create the foundation for the automated atomic scale manufacturing

    Additive manufacturing has gained significant popularity from a manufacturing perspective due to its potential for improving production efficiency. However, ensuring consistent product quality within predetermined equipment, cost, and time constraints remains a persistent challenge. Surface roughness, a crucial quality parameter, presents difficulties in meeting the required standards, posing significant challenges in industries such as automotive, aerospace, medical devices, energy, optics, and electronics manufacturing, where surface quality directly impacts performance and functionality. As a result, researchers have given great attention to improving the quality of manufactured parts, particularly by predicting surface roughness using different parameters related to the manufactured parts. Artificial intelligence (AI) is one of the methods used by researchers to predict the surface quality of additively fabricated parts. Numerous research studies have developed models utilizing AI methods, including recent deep learning and machine learning approaches, which are effective in cost reduction and saving time, and are emerging as a promising technique. This paper presents the recent advancements in machine learning and AI deep learning techniques employed by researchers. Additionally, the paper discusses the limitations, challenges, and future directions for applying AI in surface roughness prediction for additively manufactured components. Through this review paper, it becomes evident that integrating AI methodologies holds great potential to improve the productivity and competitiveness of the additive manufacturing process. This integration minimizes the need for re-processing machined components and ensures compliance with technical specifications.
