    Condition-based maintenance for systems with aging and cumulative damage based on proportional hazards model

    This paper develops a condition-based maintenance (CBM) policy for systems subject to aging and cumulative damage. The cumulative damage is modeled by a continuous degradation process. Different from previous studies which assume that the system fails when the degradation level exceeds a specific threshold, this paper argues that the degradation itself does not directly lead to system failure, but increases the failure risk of the system. Proportional hazards model (PHM) is employed to characterize the joint effect of aging and cumulative damage. CBM models are developed for two cases: one assumes that the distribution parameters of the degradation process are known in advance, while the other assumes that the parameters are unknown and need to be estimated during system operation. In the first case, an optimal maintenance policy is obtained by minimizing the long-run cost rate. For the case with unknown parameters, periodic inspection is adopted to monitor the degradation level of the system and update the distribution parameters.     Observed and unobserved heterogeneity in failure data analysis

    In reality, failure data are often collected under diffract operational conditions (covariates), leading to heterogeneity among the data. Heterogeneity can be classified as observed and unobserved heterogeneity. Un-observed heterogeneity is the effect of unknown, unrecorded, or missing covariates. In most reliability studies, the effect of unobserved covariates is neglected. This may lead to inaccurate reliability modeling, and consequently, wrong operation and maintenance decisions. There is a lack of a systematic approach to model the unobserved covariate in reliability analysis. This paper aims to present a framework for reliability analysis in the presence of unobserved and observed covariates. Here, the unobserved covariates will be analyzed using frailty models. A case study will illustrate the application of the framework

    Risk-Based Approach for Life-Cycle Assessment and Management of Bridges and Ship Structures

    Existing civil and marine structures and infrastructures have to maintain their serviceability and safety under the effects induced by normal events and to withstand the effects of extreme events . Although the quantification of the performance of a structural system is usually conducted considering only structural aspects, in this study consequences arising from the occurrence of potential disruption of service due to failure/malfunction of structural components are also considered, leading to risk assessment.Uncertainties are unavoidable in planning, design, and maintenance of structural systems. Advanced probabilistic methods, such as Monte Carlo simulations based on Latin Hypercube sampling, finite element and response surfaces analyses are used in this study in order to account for uncertainties and their propagation over time.The main focus of this study is to develop a risk-based approach for the life-cycle assessment and management of civil and marine structures with emphasis on single highway bridges, groups of bridges, and ship structures. Risk is assessed for highway bridges under the effects of multiple hazards, including traffic, environmental attacks, scour, and earthquakes, whereas the effects of traffic and earthquake are accounted for groups of bridges. Other performance indicators, including reliability, redundancy, and resilience to disasters, are also investigated. For ship structures, a novel approach is developed for the evaluation of time-variant reliability, redundancy, and risk accounting for different limit states of the ship hull, potential effects induced by corrosion, and considering different ship operational conditions over time.Risk is assessed based on reliability analysis by accounting several limit states and quantifying the associated potential monetary losses for a spectrum of consequences, including operating costs and accident costs.A novel approach for near real-time multi-criteria optimal ship routing, integrating risk and structural health monitoring data is developed considering different damage scenarios and generic operational conditions.The developed approaches are applied to several structures, including a highway bridge crossing the Wisconsin River in Wausau, WI, a highway bridge carrying a segment of the northbound I-15 crossing the Temescal Wash located close to the city of Corona, CA, a group of existing bridges located north of the San Diego metropolitan area, and a NAVY\u27s Joint High-Speed Sealift

    Merging Data Sources to Predict Remaining Useful Life – An Automated Method to Identify Prognostic Parameters

    The ultimate goal of most prognostic systems is accurate prediction of the remaining useful life (RUL) of individual systems or components based on their use and performance. This class of prognostic algorithms is termed Degradation-Based, or Type III Prognostics. As equipment degrades, measured parameters of the system tend to change; these sensed measurements, or appropriate transformations thereof, may be used to characterize degradation. Traditionally, individual-based prognostic methods use a measure of degradation to make RUL estimates. Degradation measures may include sensed measurements, such as temperature or vibration level, or inferred measurements, such as model residuals or physics-based model predictions. Often, it is beneficial to combine several measures of degradation into a single parameter. Selection of an appropriate parameter is key for making useful individual-based RUL estimates, but methods to aid in this selection are absent in the literature. This dissertation introduces a set of metrics which characterize the suitability of a prognostic parameter. Parameter features such as trendability, monotonicity, and prognosability can be used to compare candidate prognostic parameters to determine which is most useful for individual-based prognosis. Trendability indicates the degree to which the parameters of a population of systems have the same underlying shape. Monotonicity characterizes the underlying positive or negative trend of the parameter. Finally, prognosability gives a measure of the variance in the critical failure value of a population of systems. By quantifying these features for a given parameter, the metrics can be used with any traditional optimization technique, such as Genetic Algorithms, to identify the optimal parameter for a given system. An appropriate parameter may be used with a General Path Model (GPM) approach to make RUL estimates for specific systems or components. A dynamic Bayesian updating methodology is introduced to incorporate prior information in the GPM methodology. The proposed methods are illustrated with two applications: first, to the simulated turbofan engine data provided in the 2008 Prognostics and Health Management Conference Prognostics Challenge and, second, to data collected in a laboratory milling equipment wear experiment. The automated system was shown to identify appropriate parameters in both situations and facilitate Type III prognostic model development

    Contribution to reliable control of dynamic systems

    This thesis presents sorne contributions to the field of Health-Aware Control (HAC) of dynamic systems. In the first part of this thesis, a review of the concepts and methodologies related to reliability versus degradation and fault tolerant control versus health-aware control is presented. Firstly, in an attempt to unify concepts, an overview of HAC, degradation, and reliability modeling including some of the most relevant theoretical and applied contributions is given. Moreover, reliability modeling is formalized and exemplified using the structure function, Bayesian networks (BNs) and Dynamic Bayesian networks (DBNs) as modeling tools in reliability analysis. In addition, some Reliability lmportance Measures (RIMs) are presented. In particular, this thesis develops BNs models for overall system reliability analysis through the use of Bayesian inference techniques. Bayesian networks are powerful tools in system reliability assessment due to their flexibility in modeling the reliability structure of complex systems. For the HAC scheme implementation, this thesis presents and discusses the integration of actuators health information by means of RIMs and degradation in Model Predictive Control (MPC) and Linear Quadratic Regulator algorithms. In the proposed strategies, the cost function parameters are tuned using RIMs. The methodology is able to avoid the occurrence of catastrophic and incipient faults by monitoring the overall system reliability. The proposed HAC strategies are applied to a Drinking Water Network (DWN) and a multirotor UAV system. Moreover, a third approach, which uses MPC and restricts the degradation of the system components is applied to a twin rotor system. Finally, this thesis presents and discusses two reliability interpretations. These interpretations, namely instantaneous and expected, differ in the manner how reliability is evaluated and how its evolution along time is considered. This comparison is made within a HAC framework and studies the system reliability under both approaches.Aquesta tesi presenta algunes contribucions al camp del control basat en la salut dels components "Health-Aware Control" (HAC) de sistemes dinàmics. A més, un tercer enfocament fent servir la degradació dels actuadors com a restricció dins l'algoritme de control MPC s'aplica a un sistema aeri a dos graus de llibertat (TRMS). Finalment, aquesta tesi també presenta i discuteix dues interpretacions de la fiabilitat. Aquestes interpretacions, nomenades instantània i esperada, difereixen en la forma en què s'avalua la fiabilitat i com es considera la seva evolució al llarg del temps.     OPERATIONAL METHODS FOR THE ASSESSMENT AND MANAGEMENT OF AGING INFRASTRUCTURE

    The aims and scope of the Handbook is to provide designers with a general methodology for the assessment of existing structures, which is illustrated step by step, referring to the selected case studies. The case studies have been chosen not only in order to cover as much as possible the actual variety of infrastructures and materials, but also different building periods, from the sixteenth century to the most recent past. In this way, it is possible to consider structures designed according to different approaches; in fact, while recent structures have been designed according to Codes, Standards, Guidelines or theoretical models, the most ancient ones have been designed according to empirical rules or architectural canons, therefore the understanding of original design ideas often requires that survey and in-situ measurements and investigations are supplement with historical studies. In the presentation of case studies, beside the reference to the general procedures provided by modern Codes and ISO 13822 in particular, the above mentioned necessity of understanding original design ideas and the significance of the engineering judgement in the diagnosis of the structural decays are emphasized, aiming to communicate to the reader a correct way to approach existing structures. The references mentioned in each chapter provide additional background materials, further guidance and information, allowing to widen the significance and the field of application of the assessment methods illustrated for each case study

    A New Stochastic Model for Systems Under General Repairs

    Numerous stochastic models for repairable systems have been developed by assuming different time trends, and re- pair effects. In this paper, a new general repair model based on the repair history is presented. Unlike the existing models, the closed- form solutions of the reliability metrics can be derived analytically by solving a set of differential equations. Consequently, the con- fidence bounds of these metrics can be easily estimated. The pro- posed model, as well as the estimation approach, overcomes the drawbacks of the existing models. The practical use of the proposed model is demonstrated by a much-discussed set of data. Compared to the existing models, the new model is convenient, and provides accurate estimation results
