    Detection of retinal vascular bifurcations by rotation-, scale- and reflection-invariant COSFIRE filters

    We propose trainable filters, which we call COSFIRE (Combination Of Shifted FIlter REsponses), and use to de- tect vascular bifurcations in retinal images. We configure a COSFIRE filter to be selective for a bifurcation that is speci- fied by a user in a single-step training phase. The automatic configuration comprises the selection of channels of a bank of Gabor filters and the determination of certain blur and shift parameters. A COSFIRE filter response is computed as the geometric mean of the blurred and shifted responses of the selected Gabor filters. The proposed filters share sim- ilar properties with some shape-selective neurons in visual cortex. With only five filters we achieve a recall of 98.57% at a precision of 95.37% on the 40 binary retinal images (from DRIVE), containing more than 5000 bifurcations.peer-reviewe

    Previously we have introduced a modelling framework to classify individuals in Mixed Coxian Phase-type Systems. We here add costs and obtain results for moments of total costs in (0, t], for an individual, and a cohort arriving at time zero. Based on data from the Belfast City Hospital Stroke Unit we use the overall modelling framework to obtain results for total cost in a given time interval to facilitate planners who have limited time horizons for budget planning.peer-reviewe

    Structured computer-based training in the interpretation of neuroradiological images

    Computer-based systems may be able to address a recognised need throughout the medical profession for a more structured approach to training. We describe a combined training system for neuroradiology, the MR Tutor that differs from previous approaches to computer-assisted training in radiology in that it provides case-based tuition whereby the system and user communicate in terms of a well-founded Image Description Language. The system implements a novel method of visualisation and interaction with a library of fully described cases utilising statistical models of similarity, typicality and disease categorisation of cases. We describe the rationale, knowledge representation and design of the system, and provide a formative evaluation of its usability and effectiveness

    Knowledge Based Systems: A Critical Survey of Major Concepts, Issues, and Techniques

    This Working Paper Series entry presents a detailed survey of knowledge based systems. After being in a relatively dormant state for many years, only recently is Artificial Intelligence (AI) - that branch of computer science that attempts to have machines emulate intelligent behavior - accomplishing practical results. Most of these results can be attributed to the design and use of Knowledge-Based Systems, KBSs (or ecpert systems) - problem solving computer programs that can reach a level of performance comparable to that of a human expert in some specialized problem domain. These systems can act as a consultant for various requirements like medical diagnosis, military threat analysis, project risk assessment, etc. These systems possess knowledge to enable them to make intelligent desisions. They are, however, not meant to replace the human specialists in any particular domain. A critical survey of recent work in interactive KBSs is reported. A case study (MYCIN) of a KBS, a list of existing KBSs, and an introduction to the Japanese Fifth Generation Computer Project are provided as appendices. Finally, an extensive set of KBS-related references is provided at the end of the report

    Tailored Patient Information: Some Issues and Questions

    Tailored patient information (TPI) systems are computer programs which produce personalised heath-information material for patients. TPI systems are of growing interest to the natural-language generation (NLG) community; many TPI systems have also been developed in the medical community, usually with mail-merge technology. No matter what technology is used, experience shows that it is not easy to field a TPI system, even if it is shown to be effective in clinical trials. In this paper we discuss some of the difficulties in fielding TPI systems.     Background: The computer and information technology (IT) revolution have transformed modern health care systems in the areas of communication, storage, retrieval of medical information and teaching, but little is known about IT skill and use in most developing nations.Objectives: The aim of this study has been to evaluate the reported preparedness and disposition by medical students in a Nigerian university toward the use of IT for medical education.Methods: A self-administered structured questionnaire containing 24 items was used to obtain information from medical students in the University of Ilorin, Nigeria on their level of computer usage, knowledge of computer software and hardware, availability and access to computer, possession of personal computer and e-mail address, preferred method of medical education and the use of computer as a supplement to medical education.Results: Out of 479 medical students, 179 (37.4%) had basic computer skills, 209 (43.6%) had intermediate skills and 58(12.1%) had advanced computer skills. Three hundred and thirty (68.9%) have access to computer and 451(94.2%) have e-mail addresses. For medical teaching, majority (83.09%), preferred live lecture, 56.78% lecture videos, 35.1%lecture handout on web site and 410 (85.6%) wants computer as a supplement to live lectures. Less than half (39.5%) wants laptop acquisition to be mandatory. Students with advanced computer skills were well prepared and disposed to IT than those with basic computer skill.Conclusion: The findings revealed that the medical students with advanced computer skills were well prepared and disposed to IT based medical education. Therefore, high level of computer skill is required for them to be prepared and favorably disposed to IT based medical education
