Soft Sphere Detection with Bounded Search for High-Throughput MIMO Receivers
We propose a soft sphere detection algorithm where search-bounds are determined based on the distribution of candidates found inside the sphere for different search levels. Detection accuracy of unbounded search is preserved while
significant saving of memory space and reduction of latency is achieved. This probabilistic search algorithm provides significantly better frame-error rate performance than the soft K-best solution and has comparable performance and smaller computational complexity than the bounded depth-first search method.
Techniques for efficient and flexible architecture design of soft sphere detectors are also presented. The estimated hardware cost is lower than the hardware cost of other soft sphere detectors from the literature, while high detection throughput per channel use is achieved
SWIPE: a bolometric polarimeter for the Large-Scale Polarization Explorer
The balloon-borne LSPE mission is optimized to measure the linear
polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background at large angular scales. The
Short Wavelength Instrument for the Polarization Explorer (SWIPE) is composed
of 3 arrays of multi-mode bolometers cooled at 0.3K, with optical components
and filters cryogenically cooled below 4K to reduce the background on the
detectors. Polarimetry is achieved by means of large rotating half-wave plates
and wire-grid polarizers in front of the arrays. The polarization modulator is
the first component of the optical chain, reducing significantly the effect of
instrumental polarization. In SWIPE we trade angular resolution for
sensitivity. The diameter of the entrance pupil of the refractive telescope is
45 cm, while the field optics is optimized to collect tens of modes for each
detector, thus boosting the absorbed power. This approach results in a FWHM
resolution of 1.8, 1.5, 1.2 degrees at 95, 145, 245 GHz respectively. The
expected performance of the three channels is limited by photon noise,
resulting in a final sensitivity around 0.1-0.2 uK per beam, for a 13 days

The Footprint Database and Web Services of the Herschel Space Observatory
Data from the Herschel Space Observatory is freely available to the public
but no uniformly processed catalogue of the observations has been published so
far. To date, the Herschel Science Archive does not contain the exact sky
coverage (footprint) of individual observations and supports search for
measurements based on bounding circles only. Drawing on previous experience in
implementing footprint databases, we built the Herschel Footprint Database and
Web Services for the Herschel Space Observatory to provide efficient search
capabilities for typical astronomical queries. The database was designed with
the following main goals in mind: (a) provide a unified data model for
meta-data of all instruments and observational modes, (b) quickly find
observations covering a selected object and its neighbourhood, (c) quickly find
every observation in a larger area of the sky, (d) allow for finding solar
system objects crossing observation fields. As a first step, we developed a
unified data model of observations of all three Herschel instruments for all
pointing and instrument modes. Then, using telescope pointing information and
observational meta-data, we compiled a database of footprints. As opposed to
methods using pixellation of the sphere, we represent sky coverage in an exact
geometric form allowing for precise area calculations. For easier handling of
Herschel observation footprints with rather complex shapes, two algorithms were
implemented to reduce the outline. Furthermore, a new visualisation tool to
plot footprints with various spherical projections was developed. Indexing of
the footprints using Hierarchical Triangular Mesh makes it possible to quickly
find observations based on sky coverage, time and meta-data. The database is
accessible via a web site (http://herschel.vo.elte.hu) and also as a set of

Advanced Wireless Digital Baseband Signal Processing Beyond 100 Gbit/s
International audienceThe continuing trend towards higher data rates in wireless communication systems will, in addition to a higher spectral efficiency and lowest signal processing latencies, lead to throughput requirements for the digital baseband signal processing beyond 100 Gbit/s, which is at least one order of magnitude higher than the tens of Gbit/s targeted in the 5G standardization. At the same time, advances in silicon technology due to shrinking feature sizes and increased performance parameters alone won't provide the necessary gain, especially in energy efficiency for wireless transceivers, which have tightly constrained power and energy budgets. In this paper, we highlight the challenges for wireless digital baseband signal processing beyond 100 Gbit/s and the limitations of today's architectures. Our focus lies on the channel decoding and MIMO detection, which are major sources of complexity in digital baseband signal processing. We discuss techniques on algorithmic and architectural level, which aim to close this gap. For the first time we show Turbo-Code decoding techniques towards 100 Gbit/s and a complete MIMO receiver beyond 100 Gbit/s in 28 nm technology

Quantum Communication Uplink to a 3U CubeSat: Feasibility & Design
Satellites are the efficient way to achieve global scale quantum
communication (Q.Com) because unavoidable losses restrict fiber based Q.Com to
a few hundred kilometers. We demonstrate the feasibility of establishing a
Q.Com uplink with a tiny 3U CubeSat (measuring just 10X10X32 cm^3 ) using
commercial off-the-shelf components, the majority of which have space heritage.
We demonstrate how to leverage the latest advancements in nano-satellite
body-pointing to show that our 4kg CubeSat can provide performance comparable
to much larger 600kg satellite missions. A comprehensive link budget and
simulation was performed to calculate the secure key rates. We discuss design
choices and trade-offs to maximize the key rate while minimizing the cost and
development needed. Our detailed design and feasibility study can be readily

An efficient GPU implementation of fixed-complexity sphere decoders for MIMO wireless systems
The use of many-core processors such as general purpose Graphic Processing Units (GPUs) has recently become attractive for the efficient implementation of signal processing algorithms for communication systems. This is due to the cost-effectiveness of GPUs together with their potential capability of parallel processing. This paper presents an implementation of the widely employed fixed-complexity sphere decoder on GPUs, which allows to considerably decrease the computational time required for the data detection stage in multiple-input multiple-output systems. Both, the hard-and soft-output versions of the method have been implemented. Speedup results show the proposed GPU implementation boosts the runtime of the parallel execution of the methods in a high performance multi-core CPU. In addition, the throughput of the algorithm is evaluated and is shown to outperform other recent implementations and to fulfill the real-time requirements of several LTE configurations. ©2012-IOS Press and the authors.
