In modern linguistics, the study of complex systemic relations and language dynamism is unlikely to be complete without considering the transitivity. Traditionally, transitivity phenomena are treated as a combination of different types of entities, formed as a result of the transformation processes or the reflection of the intermediate, syncretic facts that characterize the language system in the synchronous aspect.

Chornobyl as an Open Air Museum: A Polysemic Exploration of Power and Inner Self
This study focuses on nuclear tourism, which flourished a decade ago in the Exclusion Zone, a regimented area around the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant (Ukraine) established in 1986, where the largest recorded nuclear explosion in human history occurred. The mass pilgrimage movement transformed the place into an open air museum, a space that preserves the remnants of Soviet culture, revealing human tragedies of displacement and deaths, and the nature of state nuclear power. This study examines the impact of the site on its visitors and the motivations for their persistence and activities in the Zone, and argues that through photography, cartography, exploration, and discovery, the pilgrims attempt to decode the historical and ideological meaning of Chornobyl and its significance for future generations. Ultimately, the aesthetic and political space of the Zone helps them establish a conceptual and mnemonic connection between the Soviet past and Ukraine’s present and future. Their practices, in turn, help maintain the Zone’s spatial and epistemological continuity. Importantly, Chornobyl seems to be polysemic in nature, inviting interpretations and shaping people’s national and intellectual identities
European smart specialization for Ukrainian regional development: path from creation to implementation
The focus of the research is to develop recommendations of smart specialization (SS) for Ukrainian policymakers using European approaches. The authors revealed that the main SS projects are presented in such sectors as agri-food, industrial modernization and energy. More than 12 EU countries were the plot for conducted analysis of SS, as a result of which the level of activity of each country was determined. The creation of consortiums, including SMEs, associations, universities and other participants, disclosed the successful way of SS realization. The structure of SME’s innovative potential
in Ukraine was identified underlining their main characteristic features like types of innovations and innovative activity, differentiation according to enterprise size, their regional distribution. The authors explored lack of innovations on regional and national level and significant territorial disparities, which could be eliminated through policy implementation of regional SS. The existing legislative norms for possibility of SS implementation in Ukraine were analyzed due to correspondence with the EU ones.
The analysis provides the opportunity to consider them only as general framework documents without any action plans and sectoral prioritization at all. The weak points of these law documents are emphasized. As a result of research, the authors developed recommendations presented by direct action plan for Ukrainian policymakers, which include such activities as underlining key priorities (especially ICT applicability in every SS project) and their correspondence with the EU ones; eliminating regional imbalances by focusing on innovation development and reorientation of some regions according to SS priorities; respecting regional existing capacities; providing organizational mechanism for cooperation of stakeholders and financial mechanism for SS support through the EU structural funds
Problematizing the transgender phenomenon: sexual geopolitics and Europeanization in contemporary Ukraine
This dissertation explores the emergence of the transgender phenomenon within professionalized transgender and LGB activism in contemporary Ukraine. I explore how the transgender phenomenon has been formed within professionalized transgender activism as a particular object for thought and problematized. I investigate the production of “transgender” as a problematized phenomenon at the intersection of three intertwined frameworks: (1) local legal and medical regulations, (2) local professionalized transgender and LGB activism with its external conditionality imposed by donor agencies and “Western” discourses, and (3) an ongoing geopolitical process of Europeanization which involves negotiations over belonging to “Europe”. The analysis has borrowed from governmentality studies, notably the concept of problematization, and scholarly literature on Europeanization, paying particular attention to the instrumentalization of sexual diversity and the transfer of ideas (both seen as indispensable parts of Europeanization). I position my research in relation to transgender and LGBT studies on the one hand, and Russian and Eastern European (post-socialist) area studies on the other. I lean on a conceptual vocabulary developed by scholars who have problematized the construction of “Central and Eastern European” and/or “post-Socialist” spaces from an explicit or implicit post-colonial stance, as well as scholars who have critically investigated sexual politics in “Eastern and Central Europe” in the context of EU enlargement. I ground my research in problematization as a methodology and use qualitative research methods to collect data. Therefore, the study is based on a combination of interviews, participant observations, as well as texts and documents, including transgender archive material from Ukrainian LGBT NGOs. Using this data, I investigate how the transfer of ideas from “West” to “East” pertaining to (trans)gender issues and activism is interwoven with current global and local geopolitical interests and implicated in East/West dynamics. Importantly, the research also pays attention to the ruptures in discourses and practices that occur in the process of translation of globalized approaches into local settings
Distributional semantic modeling: a revised technique to train term/word vector space models applying the ontology-related approach
We design a new technique for the distributional semantic modeling with a
neural network-based approach to learn distributed term representations (or
term embeddings) - term vector space models as a result, inspired by the recent
ontology-related approach (using different types of contextual knowledge such
as syntactic knowledge, terminological knowledge, semantic knowledge, etc.) to
the identification of terms (term extraction) and relations between them
(relation extraction) called semantic pre-processing technology - SPT. Our
method relies on automatic term extraction from the natural language texts and
subsequent formation of the problem-oriented or application-oriented (also
deeply annotated) text corpora where the fundamental entity is the term
(includes non-compositional and compositional terms). This gives us an
opportunity to changeover from distributed word representations (or word
embeddings) to distributed term representations (or term embeddings). This
transition will allow to generate more accurate semantic maps of different
subject domains (also, of relations between input terms - it is useful to
explore clusters and oppositions, or to test your hypotheses about them). The
semantic map can be represented as a graph using Vec2graph - a Python library
for visualizing word embeddings (term embeddings in our case) as dynamic and
interactive graphs. The Vec2graph library coupled with term embeddings will not
only improve accuracy in solving standard NLP tasks, but also update the
conventional concept of automated ontology development. The main practical
result of our work is the development kit (set of toolkits represented as web
service APIs and web application), which provides all necessary routines for
the basic linguistic pre-processing and the semantic pre-processing of the
natural language texts in Ukrainian for future training of term vector space
models.Comment: In English, 9 pages, 2 figures. Not published yet. Prepared for

Intertextuality and Iconography in Sergei Iukhimov\u27s Illustrations for The Lord of the Rings: Five Case Studies
Intertextuality and Iconography in Sergei Iukhimov’s Illustrations for The Lord of the Rings: Five Case Studies
Abstract
J.R.R. Tolkien once remarked in a letter to his publisher that his friends had been so impressed by Pauline Baynes’ illustrations for Farmer Giles of Ham that they labelled his text a “commentary on the drawings”. This apparently light-hearted anecdote conceals an interesting truth: the relationship between text and image can be problematic and the reading of an illustration depends largely on the culturally acquired discursive precedents which an individual viewer brings to the act of looking. This situation may be further complicated when account is taken of any incidences of visual borrowing present within an illustration. The primary purpose of this article therefore is to identify and evaluate such incidences of visual borrowing and, by extension, intertextual meaning in five of Sergei Iukhimov’s Soviet era illustrations for Natalya Grigor’eva and Vladimir Grushetskij’s 1993 Russian translation of The Lord of the Rings.
I begin by defining the two distinct types of visual borrowing detectable within the Iukhimov case studies: general correspondence and direct visual prototype. I then establish my methodological approach, describing how semiotic and iconographic elements are synthesised to form a new interpretive model. Subsequent analysis of the case studies reveals a diversity of borrowed motifs, derived from sources such as frescoes, hagiographic paintings and manuscript miniatures. I also demonstrate how, in several case studies, certain borrowed motifs retain enough of their original iconography that, when combined with the new Tolkienian motif, give rise to polysemy. To conclude, I hypothesise that Iukhimov’s corpus functions most effectively when viewed as a visual affirmation of the plurality of images which existed outside of Soviet totalitarianism
