    The Project Scheduling Problem with Non-Deterministic Activities Duration: A Literature Review

    Purpose: The goal of this article is to provide an extensive literature review of the models and solution procedures proposed by many researchers interested on the Project Scheduling Problem with nondeterministic activities duration. Design/methodology/approach: This paper presents an exhaustive literature review, identifying the existing models where the activities duration were taken as uncertain or random parameters. In order to get published articles since 1996, was employed the Scopus database. The articles were selected on the basis of reviews of abstracts, methodologies, and conclusions. The results were classified according to following characteristics: year of publication, mathematical representation of the activities duration, solution techniques applied, and type of problem solved. Findings: Genetic Algorithms (GA) was pointed out as the main solution technique employed by researchers, and the Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling Problem (RCPSP) as the most studied type of problem. On the other hand, the application of new solution techniques, and the possibility of incorporating traditional methods into new PSP variants was presented as research trends. Originality/value: This literature review contents not only a descriptive analysis of the published articles but also a statistical information section in order to examine the state of the research activity carried out in relation to the Project Scheduling Problem with non-deterministic activities duration.Peer Reviewe

    Fuzzy reliability prediction of rotating machinery product with accelerated testing data

    For machinery product experienced several operating conditions, this paper proposes a framework of fuzzy reliability analysis of machinery accelerated testing. Due to the non-stationary of the vibration signals, a Gaussian mixture model (GMM) method is introduced to obtain the degradation index through calculating the overlap between current feature set and the historical baseline set. The features in four domains are extracted. Considered that the uncertainties exit in feature extraction and health assessment, a fuzzy regression model is used to describe the degradation path at each operating condition and compute fuzzy quasi time to failures (q-TTFs). Meanwhile, the relationship between q-TTFs and environmental variables are identified by a linear model, through which the fuzzy reliability analysis can be conducted with the most appropriate lifetime distribution. An industrial application is used to verify the effectiveness of the proposed framework and the results have confirmed a good consistency with the true values

    Real-Time Machine Learning Based Open Switch Fault Detection and Isolation for Multilevel Multiphase Drives

    Due to the rapid proliferation interest of the multiphase machines and their combination with multilevel inverters technology, the demand for high reliability and resilient in the multiphase multilevel drives is increased. High reliability can be achieved by deploying systematic preventive real-time monitoring, robust control, and efficient fault diagnosis strategies. Fault diagnosis, as an indispensable methodology to preserve the seamless post-fault operation, is carried out in consecutive steps; monitoring the observable signals to generate the residuals, evaluating the observations to make a binary decision if any abnormality has occurred, and identifying the characteristics of the abnormalities to locate and isolate the failed components. It is followed by applying an appropriate reconfiguration strategy to ensure that the system can tolerate the failure. The primary focus of presented dissertation was to address employing computational and machine learning techniques to construct a proficient fault diagnosis scheme in multilevel multiphase drives. First, the data-driven nonlinear model identification/prediction methods are used to form a hybrid fault detection framework, which combines module-level and system-level methods in power converters, to enhance the performance and obtain a rapid real-time detection. Applying suggested nonlinear model predictors along with different systems (conventional two-level inverter and three-level neutral point clamped inverter) result in reducing the detection time to 1% of stator current fundamental period without deploying component-level monitoring equipment. Further, two methods using semi-supervised learning and analytical data mining concepts are presented to isolate the failed component. The semi-supervised fuzzy algorithm is engaged in building the clustering model because the deficient labeled datasets (prior knowledge of the system) leads to degraded performance in supervised clustering. Also, an analytical data mining procedure is presented based on data interpretability that yields two criteria to isolate the failure. A key part of this work also dealt with the discrimination between the post-fault characteristics, which are supposed to carry the data reflecting the fault influence, and the output responses, which are compensated by controllers under closed-loop control strategy.     Past, present and future of path-planning algorithms for mobile robot navigation in dynamic environments

    Mobile robots have been making a significant contribution to the advancement of many sectors including automation of mining, space, surveillance, military, health, agriculture and many more. Safe and efficient navigation is a fundamental requirement of mobile robots, thus, the demand for advanced algorithms rapidly increased. Mobile robot navigation encompasses the following four requirements: perception, localization, path-planning and motion control. Among those, path-planning is a vital part of a fast, secure operation. During the last couple of decades, many path-planning algorithms were developed. Despite most of the mobile robot applications being in dynamic environments, the number of algorithms capable of navigating robots in dynamic environments is limited. This paper presents a qualitative comparative study of the up-to-date mobile robot path-planning methods capable of navigating robots in dynamic environments. The paper discusses both classical and heuristic methods including artificial potential field, genetic algorithm, fuzzy logic, neural networks, artificial bee colony, particle swarm optimization, bacterial foraging optimization, ant-colony and Agoraphilic algorithm. The general advantages and disadvantages of each method are discussed. Furthermore, the commonly used state-of-the-art methods are critically analyzed based on six performance criteria: algorithm's ability to navigate in dynamically cluttered areas, moving goal hunting ability, object tracking ability, object path prediction ability, incorporating the obstacle velocity in the decision, validation by simulation and experimentation. This investigation benefits researchers in choosing suitable path-planning methods for different applications as well as identifying gaps in this field. © 2020 IEEE

    A review of optimization techniques in spacecraft flight trajectory design

    For most atmospheric or exo-atmospheric spacecraft flight scenarios, a well-designed trajectory is usually a key for stable flight and for improved guidance and control of the vehicle. Although extensive research work has been carried out on the design of spacecraft trajectories for different mission profiles and many effective tools were successfully developed for optimizing the flight path, it is only in the recent five years that there has been a growing interest in planning the flight trajectories with the consideration of multiple mission objectives and various model errors/uncertainties. It is worth noting that in many practical spacecraft guidance, navigation and control systems, multiple performance indices and different types of uncertainties must frequently be considered during the path planning phase. As a result, these requirements bring the development of multi-objective spacecraft trajectory optimization methods as well as stochastic spacecraft trajectory optimization algorithms. This paper aims to broadly review the state-of-the-art development in numerical multi-objective trajectory optimization algorithms and stochastic trajectory planning techniques for spacecraft flight operations. A brief description of the mathematical formulation of the problem is firstly introduced. Following that, various optimization methods that can be effective for solving spacecraft trajectory planning problems are reviewed, including the gradient-based methods, the convexification-based methods, and the evolutionary/metaheuristic methods. The multi-objective spacecraft trajectory optimization formulation, together with different class of multi-objective optimization algorithms, is then overviewed. The key features such as the advantages and disadvantages of these recently-developed multi-objective techniques are summarised. Moreover, attentions are given to extend the original deterministic problem to a stochastic version. Some robust optimization strategies are also outlined to deal with the stochastic trajectory planning formulation. In addition, a special focus will be given on the recent applications of the optimized trajectory. Finally, some conclusions are drawn and future research on the development of multi-objective and stochastic trajectory optimization techniques is discussed

    Optimal Distribution Reconfiguration and Demand Management within Practical Operational Constraints

    This dissertation focuses on specific aspects of the technical design and operation of a `smart\u27 distribution system incorporating new technology in the design process. The main purpose of this dissertation is to propose new algorithms in order to achieve a more reliable and economic distribution system. First, a general approach based on Mixed Integer Programming (MIP) is proposed to formulate the reconfiguration problem for a radial/weakly meshed distribution network or restoration following a fault. Two objectives considered in this study are to minimize the active power loss, and to minimize the number of switching operations with respect to operational constraints, such as power balance, line ow limits, voltage limit, and radiality of the network. The latter is the most challenging issue in solving the problem by MIP. A novel approach based on Depth-First Search (DFS) algorithm is implemented to avoid cycles and loops in the system. Due to insufficient measurements and high penetration of controllable loads and renewable resources, reconfiguration with deterministic optimization may not lead to an optimal/feasible result. Therefore, two different methods are proposed to solve the reconfiguration problem in presence of load uncertainty. Second, a new pricing algorithm for residential load participation in demand response program is proposed. The objective is to reduce the cost to the utility company while mitigating the impact on customer satisfaction. This is an iterative approach in which residents and energy supplier exchange information on consumption and price. The prices as well as appliance schedule for the residential customers will be achieved at the point of convergence. As an important contribution of this work, distribution network constraints such as voltage limits, equipment capacity limits, and phase balance constraints are considered in the pricing algorithm. Similar to the locational marginal price (LMP) at the transmission level, different prices for distribution nodes will be obtained. Primary consideration in the proposed approach, and frequently ignored in the literature, is to avoid overly sophisticated decision-making at the customer level. Most customers will have limited capacity or need for elaborate scheduling where actual energy cost savings will be modest
