    An analysis of security issues in building automation systems

    The purpose of Building Automation Systems (BAS) is to centralise the management of a wide range of building services, through the use of integrated protocol and communication media. Through the use of IP-based communication and encapsulated protocols, BAS are increasingly being connected to corporate networks and also being remotely accessed for management purposes, both for convenience and emergency purposes. These protocols, however, were not designed with security as a primary requirement, thus the majority of systems operate with sub-standard or non-existent security implementations, relying on security through obscurity. Research has been undertaken into addressing the shortfalls of security implementations in BAS, however defining the threats against BAS, and detection of these threats is an area that is particularly lacking. This paper presents an overview of the current security measures in BAS, outlining key issues, and methods that can be improved to protect cyber physical systems against the increasing threat of cyber terrorism and hacktivism. Future research aims to further evaluate and improve the detection systems used in BAS through first defining the threats and then applying and evaluating machine learning algorithms for traffic classification and IDS profiling capable of operating on resource constrained BAS

    Software Engineering Challenges for Investigating Cyber-Physical Incidents

    Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) are characterized by the interplay between digital and physical spaces. This characteristic has extended the attack surface that could be exploited by an offender to cause harm. An increasing number of cyber-physical incidents may occur depending on the configuration of the physical and digital spaces and their interplay. Traditional investigation processes are not adequate to investigate these incidents, as they may overlook the extended attack surface resulting from such interplay, leading to relevant evidence being missed and testing flawed hypotheses explaining the incidents. The software engineering research community can contribute to addressing this problem, by deploying existing formalisms to model digital and physical spaces, and using analysis techniques to reason about their interplay and evolution. In this paper, supported by a motivating example, we describe some emerging software engineering challenges to support investigations of cyber-physical incidents. We review and critique existing research proposed to address these challenges, and sketch an initial solution based on a meta-model to represent cyber-physical incidents and a representation of the topology of digital and physical spaces that supports reasoning about their interplay

    Embedded systems technology has a lot of applications in the various fields of life to bring ease and comfort for humans. One kind of applications is in the development of modern buildings, where embedded systems are applied to the control system. Building Automation Systems (BAS) are often encountered in modern buildings today. They are responsible to automatically control the building appliances such as electrical equipments, fire alarms, security systems, and others. Conventionally, a smart home that can be controlled by an embedded system is connected to a central monitoring unit such as a computer. The system commonly employs RS232 or RS485 serial communication, so that the control activities cannot be carried out from a long distance. With the rapid technology development in the field of communication, many recent communication devices are practical and have a good performance. One of them is a device with the Android operating system that can access the internet, thus it has a significant role in simplifying the management of smart homes. This research proposes the design of a smart home that can conserve energy by turning off unneeded electrical appliances, detect disorders such as flood, fire, and theft, and also serve as an early warning system through SMS Gateway. It can be monitored and controlled remotely over the Internet by an Android device

    Smart Home reduces the need for active involvement of users in the process of monitoring and regulating household appliances. This study provides a method for developing Smart Home Energy Efficiency applications through integration of IoT (Internet of Things) with IP-based switching of Web services as well as Cloud Technology. The methodology embeds intelligent systems and machine learning into the design in addition to using the Poisson process along with the actuators and sensors in Arduino environment. Moreover, we apply the use fault detection to validate the efficiency and feasibility of the Smart Home implementation by assessing the home environments, taking care of home equipment, appliances and regulating home access.Akıllı Ev, kullanıcıların ev aletlerini izleme ve düzenleme sürecinde aktif katılım ihtiyacını azaltır. Bu çalışma, IoT'nin (Nesnelerin İnterneti) Internet tabanlı IP servislerinin yanı sıra Bulut Teknolojisi ile entegrasyonuyla Akıllı Ev Enerjisi Verimliliği uygulamalarının geliştirilmesi için bir yöntem sunmaktadır. Metodoloji, Poisson sürecinin Arduino ortamındaki aktüatörler ve sensörler ile birlikte kullanılmasının yanı sıra, akıllı sistemler ve makine öğrenmesini tasarıma dahil eder.
