    Inter-Destination Multimedia Synchronization; Schemes, Use Cases and Standardization

    Traditionally, the media consumption model has been a passive and isolated activity. However, the advent of media streaming technologies, interactive social applications, and synchronous communications, as well as the convergence between these three developments, point to an evolution towards dynamic shared media experiences. In this new model, geographically distributed groups of consumers, independently of their location and the nature of their end-devices, can be immersed in a common virtual networked environment in which they can share multimedia services, interact and collaborate in real-time within the context of simultaneous media content consumption. In most of these multimedia services and applications, apart from the well-known intra and inter-stream synchronization techniques that are important inside the consumers playout devices, also the synchronization of the playout processes between several distributed receivers, known as multipoint, group or Inter-destination multimedia synchronization (IDMS), becomes essential. Due to the increasing popularity of social networking, this type of multimedia synchronization has gained in popularity in recent years. Although Social TV is perhaps the most prominent use case in which IDMS is useful, in this paper we present up to 19 use cases for IDMS, each one having its own synchronization requirements. Different approaches used in the (recent) past by researchers to achieve IDMS are described and compared.     Architectures and technologies for quality of service provisioning in next generation networks

    A NGN is a telecommunication network that differs from classical dedicated networks because of its capability to provide voice, video, data and cellular services on the same infrastructure (Quadruple-Play). The ITU-T standardization body has defined the NGN architecture in three different and well-defined strata: the transport stratum which takes care of maintaining end-to-end connectivity, the service stratum that is responsible for enabling the creation and the delivery of services, and finally the application stratum where applications can be created and executed. The most important separation in this architecture is relative to transport and service stratum. The aim is to enable the flexibility to add, maintain and remove services without any impact on the transport layer; to enable the flexibility to add, maintain and remove transport technologies without any impact on the access to service, application, content and information; and finally the efficient cohesistence of multiple terminals, access technologies and core transport technologies. The Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) is a paradigm often used in systems deployment and integration for organizing and utilizing distributed capabilities under the control of different ownership domains. In this thesis, the SOA technologies in network architetures are surveyed following the NGN functional architecture as defined by the ITU-T. Within each stratum, the main logical functions that have been the subject of investigation according to a service-oriented approach have been highlighted. Moreover, a new definition of the NGN transport stratum functionalities according to the SOA paradigm is proposed; an implementation of the relevant services interfaces to analyze this approach with experimental results shows some insight on the potentialities of the proposed strategy. Within NGN architectures research topic, especially in IP-based network architectures, Traffic Engineering (TE) is referred to as a set of policies and algorithms aimed at balancing network traffic load so as to improve network resource utilization and guarantee the service specific end-to-end QoS. DS-TE technology extends TE functionalities to a per-class basis implementation by introducing a higher level of traffic classification which associates to each class type (CT) a constraint on bandwidth utilization. These constraints are set by defining and configuring a bandwidth constraint (BC) model whih drives resource utilization aiming to higher load balancing, higher QoS performance and lower call blocking rate. Default TE implementations relies on a centralized approach to bandwidth and routing management, that require external management entities which periodically collect network status information and provide management actions. However, due to increasing network complexity, it is desiderable that nodes automatically discover their environment, self-configure and update to adapt to changes. In this thesis the bandwidth management problem is approached adopting an autonomic and distributed approach. Each node has a self-management module, which monitors the unreserved bandwidth in adjacent nodes and adjusts the local bandwidth constraints so as to reduce the differences in the unreserved bandwidth of neighbor nodes. With this distributed and autonomic algorithm, BC are dinamically modified to drive routing decision toward the traffic balancing respecting the QoS constraints for each class-type traffic requests. Finally, Video on Demand (VoD) is a service that provides a video whenever the customer requests it. Realizing a VoD system by means of the Internet network requires architectures tailored to video features such as guaranteed bandwidths and constrained transmission delays: these are hard to be provided in the traditional Internet architecture that is not designed to provide an adequate quality of service (QoS) and quality of experience (QoE) to the final user. Typical VoD solutions can be grouped in four categories: centralized, proxy-based, Content Delivery Network(CDN) and Hybrid architectures. Hybrid architectures combine the employment of a centralized server with that of a Peer-to-peer (P2P) network. This approach can effectively reduce the server load and avoid network congestions close to the server site because the peers support the delivery of the video to other peers using a cache-and-relay strategy making use of their upload bandwidth. Anyway, in a peer-to-peer network each peer is free to join and leave the network without notice, bringing to the phenomena of peer churns. These dynamics are dangerous for VoD architectures, affecting the integrity and retainability of the service. In this thesis, a study aimed to evaluate the impact of the peer churn on the system performance is proposed. Starting from important relationships between system parameters such as playback buffer length, peer request rate, peer average lifetime and server upload rate, four different analytic models are proposed

    The massive success and proliferation of Internet technologies has forced network operators to recognise the benefits of an IP-based communications framework. The IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) has been proposed as a candidate technology to provide a non-disruptive strategy in the move to all-IP and to facilitate the true convergence of data and real-time multimedia services. Despite the obvious advantages of creating a controlled environment for deploying IP services, and hence increasing the value of the telco bundle, there are several challenges that face IMS deployment. The most critical is that posed by the widespread proliferation ofWeb 2.0 services. This environment is not seen as robust enough to be used by network operators for revenue generating services. However IMS operators will need to justify charging for services that are typically available free of charge in the Internet space. Reliability and guaranteed transport of multimedia services by the efficient management of resources will be critical to differentiate IMS services. This thesis investigates resource management within the IMS framework. The standardisation of NGN/IMS resource management frameworks has been fragmented, resulting in weak functional and interface specifications. To facilitate more coherent, focused research and address interoperability concerns that could hamper deployment, a Common Policy and Charging Control (PCC) architecture is presented that defines a set of generic terms and functional elements. A review of related literature and standardisation reveals severe shortcomings regarding vertical and horizontal coordination of resources in the IMS framework. The deployment of new services should not require QoS standardisation or network upgrade, though in the current architecture advanced multimedia services are not catered for. It has been found that end-to-end QoS mechanisms in the Common PCC framework are elementary. To address these challenges and assist network operators when formulating their iii NGN strategies, this thesis proposes an application driven policy control architecture that incorporates end-user and service requirements into the QoS negotiation procedure. This architecture facilitates full interaction between service control and resource control planes, and between application developers and the policies that govern resource control. Furthermore, a novel, session based end-to-end policy control architecture is proposed to support inter-domain coordination across IMS domains. This architecture uses SIP inherent routing information to discover the routes traversed by the signalling and the associated routes traversed by the media. This mechanism effectively allows applications to issue resource requests from their home domain and enable end-to-end QoS connectivity across all traversed transport segments. Standard interfaces are used and transport plane overhaul is not necessary for this functionality. The Common PCC, application driven and session based end-to-end architectures are implemented in a standards compliant and entirely open source practical testbed. This demonstrates proof of concept and provides a platform for performance evaluations. It has been found that while there is a cost in delay and traffic overhead when implementing the complete architecture, this cost falls within established criteria and will have an acceptable effect on end-user experience. The open nature of the practical testbed ensures that all evaluations are fully reproducible and provides a convenient point of departure for future work. While it is important to leave room for flexibility and vendor innovation, it is critical that the harmonisation of NGN/IMS resource management frameworks takes place and that the architectures proposed in this thesis be further developed and integrated into the single set of specifications. The alternative is general interoperability issues that could render end-to-end QoS provisioning for advanced multimedia services almost impossible

    Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien bilden seit langem das immer wichtiger werdende Rückgrat der weltweiten Wirtschaft und Telekommunikation, in der speziell Telekommunikationsnetze und -dienste einen elementaren Anteil tragen. Durch die Konvergenz von Telekommunikations- und Internettechnologien hat sich die Telekommunikationslandschaft in der letzten Dekade drastisch verändert. Bislang geschlossene Telekommunikationsumgebungen haben sich imWandel zum sogenannten Next Generation Network (NGN) hinsichtlich unterstützter Zugangsnetztechnologien und angebotener multimedialer Anwendungen sowie der eingesetzten Protokolle und Dienste zu komplexen, hochdynamischen, Multi-Service Infrastrukturen gewandelt. Die Kontrollschicht solcher NGNs ist dabei von übergeordneter Bedeutung, da diese zwischen den Zugangsnetzen und den Anwendungen sitzt. Der Einsatz und die Optimierung des IP-Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) wurde in diesem Kontext Jahrelang erforscht und diskutiert und es repräsentiert heute die weltweit anerkannte Kontrollplattform für feste und mobile Telekommunikationsnetze. Die Forschung an Protokollen und Diensten in diesen NGN Umgebungen ist aufgrund der Konvergenz von Technologien, Anwendungen und Business Modellen sowie der hohen Dynamik aber kurzen Innovationszyklen hochkomplex. Der frühzeitigen Zugang zu herstellerunabhängigen – aber dicht an der Produktwelt angelehnten - Validierungsinfrastrukturen, sogenannten offenen Technologietest-beds, kurz Test-beds, ist daher für Forschungs- und Entwicklungsabteilungen unerlässlich Die vorliegende Dissertation beschreibt die umfangreiche Forschungsarbeit des Autors auf dem Gebiet der offenen NGN Test-beds über die letzten neun Jahre und konzentriert sich dabei auf Entwurf, Entwicklung und Bereitstellung des Open Source IMS Core Projekt, das seit Jahren die Grundlage für eine Vielzahl von NGN Test-beds und zahllose NGN Forschungs- und Entwicklungsprojekte im akademischen als auch Industrienahen Umfeld rund um den Globus darstellt. Dabei wird ein großer Schwerpunkt auf die Anforderungen hinsichtlich Flexibilität, Leistung, Funktionalitätsumfang und Interoperabilität, sowie elementare Designprinzipien von Test-bedwerkzeugen gelegt. Die Arbeit beschreibt und bewertet darüberhinaus den Einsatz von Open Source Prinzipien und veranschaulicht die Vorteile dieses Ansatzes hinsichtlich Einfluss und Nachhaltigkeit der Forschung anhand des Aufbaus einer globalen Open Source IMS Core (OpenIMSCore) Forschungs-Community. Außerdem veranschaulicht die Arbeit zum Ende die Wiederverwendbarkeit der wesentlichen angewendeten Designprinzipien an anderen maßgeblich durch den Autor entwickelten Test-bed Werkzeugen, insbesondere dem Open Evolved Packet Core (OpenEPC) für die nahtlose Integration verschiedener Breitbandnetztechnologien.Information and Communication Technologies provide for a long time already the backbone of telecommunication networks, such that communication services represent an elementary foundation of today’s globally connected economy. The telecommunication landscape has experienced dramatic transformations through the convergence of the Telecom and the Internet worlds. The previously closed telecommunication domain is currently transforming itself through the so-called NGN evolution into a highly dynamic multiservice infrastructure, supporting rich multimedia applications, as well as providing comprehensive support for various access technologies. The control layer of such NGNs is then of paramount importance, as representing the convergent mediator between access and services. The use and the optimization of the IP-Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) was researched and considered in this domain for many years now, such that today it represents the world-wide recognized control platform for fixed and mobile NGNs. Research on protocols and services for such NGN architectures, due to the convergence of technologies, applications and business models, as well as for enabling highly dynamic and short innovation cycles, is highly complex and requires early access to vendor independent - yet close to real life systems - validation environments, the so-called open technology test-beds. The present thesis describes the extensive research of the author over the last nine years in the field of open NGN test-beds. It focuses on the design, development and deployment of the Open Source IMS Core project, which represents since years the foundation of numerous NGN test-beds and countless NGN Research & Development projects in the academia as well as the industry domain around the globe. A major emphasis is given for ensuring flexibility, performance, reference functionality and inter-operability, as well as satisfying elementary design principles of such test-bed toolkits. The study also describes and evaluates the use of Open Source principles, highlighting the advantages of using it in regard to the creation, impact and sustainability of a global OpenIMSCore research community. Moreover, the work documents that the essential design principles and methodology employed can be reused in a generic way to create test-bed toolkits in other technology domains. This is shown by introducing the OpenEPC project, which provides for seamless integration of different mobile broadband technologies

    Plataforma de serviços em redes de próxima geração (IMS)

    Mestrado em Engenharia de Computadores e TelemáticaNuma tentativa de atrair novos clientes e manter os actuais, os operadores de telecomunicações procuram novas plataformas e tecnologias que lhes permitam o desenvolvimento rápido e eficiente de novos serviços. A arquitectura IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) normalizada pelo Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), inclui a capacidade de adicionar, modificar e remover sessões durante uma sessão multimédia, abrindo um novo leque de serviços combinando simultaneamente componentes de voz e dados entre outros componentes de Media. O IMS define uma arquitectura independente da rede de acesso, separando claramente o nível de transporte, o nível de controlo e o nível de serviços. No nível de serviços residem as Plataformas de Serviço (Service Delivery Platforms – (SDPs)), que controlam toda a lógica de execução de serviços. SDPs são uma nova aproximação arquitectural que tem como finalidade garantir o rápido desenvolvimento e execução de novos serviços multimédia, de um modo económico e simples. Tipicamente, as SDPs deverão fornecer um ambiente de criação, execução e gestão de serviços permitindo uma abstracção do ambiente de acesso ao serviço. A indústria das telecomunicações reconheceu a necessidade das SDPs, principalmente se estiverem de acordo com especificações industriais e construídas no topo de arquitecturas normalizadas (como é o caso do IMS). Um dos problemas inerentes às SDPs consiste em perceber como tirar proveito de serviços distribuídos pelas várias plataformas (tradicionais/legadas, SIP/IMS, etc.), de uma forma dinâmica, de modo a construir um serviço composto (Service Bundling) de maior valor para o utilizador final. O trabalho apresentado nesta dissertação de mestrado, foi o resultado de um estudo de toda a envolvente em torno das redes de próxima geração, analisando ainda detalhadamente a camada superior de serviços (plataforma de serviços) que irá, num futuro próximo, ter um papel fundamental na obtenção de receitas por parte do operador, dando ainda destaque aos elementos de taxação da arquitectura IMS. Para demonstrador, foi desenvolvido um Enabler de Charging e um conector Diameter experimentais para tarifar um serviço de Vídeo Portal numa rede IMS e um serviço de chamadas de utilizadores IMS-PSTN com tarifação em tempo real, isto é, elaboração de um serviço pré-pago. ABSTRACT: In an attempt to attract new customers and keeping the current ones, telecommunication operators are now searching new platforms and technologies for enabling fast and efficient new services development. The IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) architecture, standardize by Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), includes capabilities to add, modify and remove sessions during an ongoing multimedia session, opening the opportunity for creating new services that allow combining voice, data and other media types simultaneously. IMS defines an access independent architecture, composed by three separated layers: the transport layer, the control layer and the service layer. In the service layer we can find the Service Delivery Platforms (SDPs), which contains all the service execution logic. SDPs are a new architectural approach intended to enable the rapid development and deployment of new converged multimedia services. SDPs should typically provide a service creation, execution and management environment, and a network abstraction layer. The telecommunications industry has recognized the need for an SDP, particularly, one that conforms to industry standards and are built on top of a standard architecture (IMS case). The problem lies on how to profit with the different services distributed by different platforms (legacy, SIP/IMS, etc.) in a dynamic way, allowing the creation of value added compose service for the end user. The work here presented on was the result of a detailed study about new next generation networks, in particular the application layer, which in a near future, will produce high revenues for the operators at the 3GPP environment. This will be based on the well defined 3GPP Charging Framework for the IMS architecture. A demonstrator was developed using an experimental Charging Enabler and a Diameter Resource Adaptor to allow charging an IMS Video Portal service and IMS user calls to PSTN – PC2Phone service, allowing online (real time) charging, more concretely pre-paid services

    Dissertation presented to obtain the PhD degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering - ElectronicsOptical processing devices based on a- SiC:H multilayer architectures are expected to become reconfigurable to perform WDM optoelectronic logic functions and provide as well complex photonic functions such as signal amplification and switching. This thesis, entitled ”Three Transducers for One Photodetector: essays for optical communications”, reports the main work areas to design, control, validate and evaluate the research of a voltage-controllable wavelength selective optical switching based on shifting between positive and negative electrically bias and a photodetector, which enables the filtering function with the detector itself and has the potential to be rapidly optically biasing tuned: System Architecture – In this work area it is defined the basic requirements of the device: light-to-dark sensitivity, colour recognition, selective optical and electrical output response, amplification and opto-electronic conversion to transmit, receive, and/or process intelligence(data).The output multiplexed signals should have a strong nonlinear dependence on the light absorption profile, i.e., on the incident light wavelength, bit rate and intensity under unbalanced light generation of carriers. Experimental Design – This test activities work area allows the evaluation of the results. Multiple monochromatic pulsed communication channels were transmitted together, each one with a specific bit sequence. The combined optical signal was analyzed by reading out, under different applied voltages and optical bias, the generated photocurrent across the device. Depending on the wavelength of the external background and irradiation side, it acts either as a short- or a long- pass band filter or as a band-stop filter Optoelectronic Algorithm Interface – To help improve our understanding of the output multiplexed signal, computer models of monolithic photodetectors are developed. Following control theoretic methods we derive state-space representation and an equivalent circuit optoelectronic simulator. We validate each model and calibrate the spectral gain model by background–probe experiments and truth tables lookup that perform 8-to-1 multiplexer (MUX) and 1-to-8 demultiplexer (DEMUX) functions. Applications – The purpose of this work area is to present a new optical logic architecture that offers considerable improvements in reconfigurability. Tunable WDM converters based on amorphous SiC multilayer photonic active filters are used to build blocks to perform standard digital system operations. The transducers combine the simultaneous demultiplexing operation with the photodetection and self amplification. They are optimized for provide the high-sensitivity needed for low-light applications, such as medicine, lighting, sensing and measurement, and manufacturing. The migration to next generation packet based networks can be much easier and smoother than previously thought, using the emerging a-Si solutions and its integration with plastic optical fiber. It will push the limits of functionality, cost/performance and integration level
