    A kernel-based framework for learning graded relations from data

    Driven by a large number of potential applications in areas like bioinformatics, information retrieval and social network analysis, the problem setting of inferring relations between pairs of data objects has recently been investigated quite intensively in the machine learning community. To this end, current approaches typically consider datasets containing crisp relations, so that standard classification methods can be adopted. However, relations between objects like similarities and preferences are often expressed in a graded manner in real-world applications. A general kernel-based framework for learning relations from data is introduced here. It extends existing approaches because both crisp and graded relations are considered, and it unifies existing approaches because different types of graded relations can be modeled, including symmetric and reciprocal relations. This framework establishes important links between recent developments in fuzzy set theory and machine learning.     Constructing the Audit Risk Assessment by the Audit Team Leader When Planning: Using Fuzzy Theory

    [EN] The aim of this study is to construct the assessment of the expected audit risk by the audit team leader (ATL) during the planification phase of the audit. The ATL plays an important role within the audit, and even more so regarding small and medium-sized (SME) audit firms. The audit risk assessment is critical as relying more (less) on internal controls implemented by the client leads to performing less (more) substantive audit procedures. This is determined by the ATL based on their professional judgement and previous experience. The use of fuzzy theory has powerful potential into the audit arena, as the audit risk assessment (outcome) is critically related to the auditors' judgement and perception. We argue that ATL characteristics are core conditions in determining the audit risk assessment when planning. Using hand-collected and private data from Spanish SME audit firms, we find that a comprehensive set of conditions must be given for perceived high audit risk. The results indicate that female and inexperienced ATLs planning the audit of indebted firms with high proportions of capital assets, less profitability, and with a larger board sizes, as they are expected to have bad internal control. The same conditions are met when expecting errors, as well as shorter audit tenures. Finally, conditions such as the ATL's experience gains importance in expecting irregularities.     Semantic reasoning in cognitive networks for heterogeneous wireless mesh systems

    The next generation of wireless networks is expected to provide not only higher bandwidths anywhere and at any time but also ubiquitous communication using different network types. However, several important issues including routing, self-configuration, device management, and context awareness have to be considered before this vision becomes reality. This paper proposes a novel cognitive network framework for heterogeneous wireless mesh systems to abstract the network control system from the infrastructure by introducing a layer that separates the management of different radio access networks from the data transmission. This approach simplifies the process of managing and optimizing the networks by using extendable smart middleware that automatically manages, configures, and optimizes the network performance. The proposed cognitive network framework, called FuzzOnto, is based on a novel approach that employs ontologies and fuzzy reasoning to facilitate the dynamic addition of new network types to the heterogeneous network. The novelty is in using semantic reasoning with cross-layer parameters from heterogeneous network architectures to manage and optimize the performance of the networks. The concept is demonstrated through the use of three network architectures: 1) wireless mesh network; 2) long-term evolution (LTE) cellular network; and 3) vehicular ad hoc network (VANET). These networks utilize nonoverlapped frequency bands and can operate simultaneously with no interference. The proposed heterogeneous network was evaluated using ns-3 network simulation software. The simulation results were compared with those produced by other networks that utilize multiple transmission devices. The results showed that the heterogeneous network outperformed the benchmark networks in both urban and VANET scenarios by up to 70% of the network throughput, even when the LTE network utilized a high bandwidth

    Biopolitics and Human Agency of North Korean border crossers: The Ethics of Coexistence, Mobility-Identity-Security Analysis (MISA), and Risk Analysis (RA)

    This thesis discusses mobility, identity, and security (MIS), risk to life, emancipatory everyday peace in the context of biopolitics and human agency of North Korean border crossers. It begins with providing a new concept of human agency comprised of ability and answerability laid on the ground of the ethics of coexistence. Next, the thesis provides prevalent definitions of three identity groups of human mobility – defector, refugee, and international migrant – and reconceptualizes them into descriptive definitions adjusted to North Korean border crossers rest on legal frameworks of five states – South Korea, China, Russia, the US, and the UK. Based on the findings gained from the empirical cases, the thesis develops its mobility-identity-security analysis by reconfiguring the relationship between state and non-state actors and human agents, depoliticizing the identity groups of border crossers, and tracing the emancipatory journey of everyday peacebuilding. At the heart of the analysis is interrelatedness in which coexistence and human agency are two main pillars. Noting that attention to the risk of the border crossing at the individual level in previous academic and professional literature has been insufficient, this thesis sets forth its risk analysis using individual border crossers as a research unit and explains the risk to life circulating in the ecology of border crossing. Specifically, risk assessment methods are developed in this thesis by applying theoretical grounds of human security and peace to the practice of migration politics. The thesis presents a set of analytical tools covering from theoretical exploration of bare life in the international scapegoat system to the quantification of life-threatening risks in border crossing at the individual level, having direct policy relevance to migration management and humanitarian practices. It attempts to empower the disempowered life, border crossers, in the discussions of their identity and security and shape the vision of peace, emancipation, and coexistence freed from negation, competition, and disciplines. The thesis concludes with its contributions to Korean politics, biopolitics, and peace studies and suggests avenues for future research to improve the values that this thesis has unveiled
