    Role of images on World Wide Web readability

    As the Internet and World Wide Web have grown, many good things have come. If you have access to a computer, you can find a lot of information quickly and easily. Electronic devices can store and retrieve vast amounts of data in seconds. You no longer have to leave your house to get products and services you could only get in person. Documents can be changed from English to Urdu or from text to speech almost instantly, making it easy for people from different cultures and with different abilities to talk to each other. As technology improves, web developers and website visitors want more animation, colour, and technology. As computers get faster at processing images and other graphics, web developers use them more and more. Users who can see colour, pictures, animation, and images can help understand and read the Web and improve the Web experience. People who have trouble reading or whose first language is not used on the website can also benefit from using pictures. But not all images help people understand and read the text they go with. For example, images just for decoration or picked by the people who made the website should not be used. Also, different factors could affect how easy it is to read graphical content, such as a low image resolution, a bad aspect ratio, a bad colour combination in the image itself, a small font size, etc., and the WCAG gave different rules for each of these problems. The rules suggest using alternative text, the right combination of colours, low contrast, and a higher resolution. But one of the biggest problems is that images that don't go with the text on a web page can make it hard to read the text. On the other hand, relevant pictures could make the page easier to read. A method has been suggested to figure out how relevant the images on websites are from the point of view of web readability. This method combines different ways to get information from images by using Cloud Vision API and Optical Character Recognition (OCR), and reading text from websites to find relevancy between them. Techniques for preprocessing data have been used on the information that has been extracted. Natural Language Processing (NLP) technique has been used to determine what images and text on a web page have to do with each other. This tool looks at fifty educational websites' pictures and assesses their relevance. Results show that images that have nothing to do with the page's content and images that aren't very good cause lower relevancy scores. A user study was done to evaluate the hypothesis that the relevant images could enhance web readability based on two evaluations: the evaluation of the 1024 end users of the page and the heuristic evaluation, which was done by 32 experts in accessibility. The user study was done with questions about what the user knows, how they feel, and what they can do. The results back up the idea that images that are relevant to the page make it easier to read.     The internet has become an integral part of people’s lives. However, any digital activity results in energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, which are the prime drivers of global warming and climate change. The environmental cost calls for the practice of sustainable web design or green human-computer interaction. While there is substantial research on ways to reduce the energy consumption of the back-end information systems, such as data centers, few studies focus on the front-end information systems, such as web design. This study aims to analyze the impact of web design on energy consumption by conducting a case study on an institutional website. A set of major web tracking and performance metrics tools will be adopted to collect data on energy consumption, web performance optimization, web design, and user experience.     ACWW: Adding Automation to the Cognitive Walkthrough for the Web (CWW)

    The Cognitive Walkthrough for the Web (CWW) is a Usability Evaluation Method that can be used as an approach to evaluate a website. Unfortunately, the original formulation of CWW has been applied by researchers in the area as a set of a semi-manual processes, which have proven to be extremely time-consuming, and as with any semi-manual process, error-prone. This thesis presents a web-based approach to automate CWW, which we call ACWW. The automation of these processes implies, on the one hand, that researchers can reduce the amount of time dedicated to computing the results associated with performing various analyses. On the other hand, it implies that the accuracy of computed results can be improved. ACWW is available from http://autocww.colorado.edu/~brownr/. Finally, ACWW has been mentioned in a paper by Dr. Marilyn Blackmon, a leader in usability research, at the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI) in April of 2005 [Blackmon05]

    Strategic management and development of UK university library websites

    This research assessed website management and development practices across the United Kingdom university library sector. As a starting point, the design and features of this group of websites was recorded against criteria drawn from the extant literature. This activity established core content and features of UK library websites as: a search box or link for searching the library catalogue, electronic resources or website; a navigation column on the left and breadcrumb trail to aid information location and website orientation; homepage design was repeated on library website sub-pages; university brand elements appeared in the banner; and a contact us link was provided for communication with library personnel. Library websites conformed to 14 of the 20 homepage usability guidelines examined indicating that web managers were taking steps to ensure that users were well served by their websites. Areas for improvement included better navigation support (sitemap/index), greater adoption of new technologies and more interactive features. Website management and development practices were established through national survey and in-depth case studies. These illustrated the adoption of a team approach to website management and development; formal website policy and strategy were not routinely created; library web personnel and their ability to build effective links with colleagues at the institution made a valuable contribution to the success of a library website; corporate services and institutional practices played an important part in library website development; library staff were actively engaged in consultations with their website audience; and a user focused approach to website development prevailed. User studies and metric data were considered in the website evaluation and development process. However, there were some issues with both data streams and interpreting metric data to inform website development.     Impact of Business-to-Consumer Electronic Commerce Factors on Firm Performance in Taiwan\u27s E-Brokerage Sector

    The new economy influences the entire economy, from corporations and governments to society. Business-to-consumer (B2C) electronic commerce (EC) continues to grow despite the burst of the 2000 e-bubble. Dramatic changes in EC and the significance of EC\u27s impact on firm performance are important practical issues. Variations in firm performance (outcome variable) are attributed to organization effect and to industry effect. Thus, a theoretical framework that combines a strategic typology with a resource-based view of the dynamic capabilities perspective can explain the industry and organization effect on firm performance. This non-experimental, correlational (explanatory) and causal-comparative (exploratory) survey and secondary data research design is the first to investigate the relationships among organizational characteristics (firm size and web age), CEO commitment to EC, strategy types, website design, and IT system integration capabilities on the performance of Taiwan\u27s e-brokerage firms. In this study, integrating factors of strategic types as an industry effect, CEO commitment to EC as a firm resource and website design and IT system integration as EC capabilities provided a better explanation of the performance of Taiwan\u27s e-brokerage firms. Findings indicated that strategy types showed no significant differences on the level of firm performance (online sales and market share). Another finding suggested that website design of catalog application and web age were significant contributors the to the online annual sales growth rate. In addition, CEO commitment to EC, website design of catalog application, IT system integration capabilities, and web age were significant explanatory factors of the online annual market share growth rate. Top managers of e-brokers in Taiwan must have the ability to do all things well in order to succeed in the rapidly-changing EC environment. EC firms can no longer benefit from first-mover advantage which contributes negatively to firm performance. At the same time, they need to emphasize and invest firm resources into EC and bundle and leverage EC (website design capabilities) as a way to create value for customers, build a sustainable competitive advantage, and gain superior performance over competitors

    Performance measurement among small-and-medium-sized UK Internet retailers

    Internet retailing is one of the fast-growing business sectors in the UK, and this sector is currently entering a more stable development stage. In this stage, the issue of business strategy and performance measurement, often neglected during the dotcom era, is gaining in importance. Although various studies have been done, the investigation of this issue is limited. This study helps to fill this gap by investigating performance measurement and business strategy of Internet retailing business, and their significance in enhancing business performance. A mail questionnaire was used in a survey of UK Internet retailers. The questionnaire contained variables of performance indicators, use of performance measurement, strategic orientation, businessp erformance, and business profile. The survey produced 252 responses of small-and-medium-sized internet retailers, defined as having less than £10 million of annual online sales turnover. By factor analysis, strategic orientation can be treated as having two dimensions:( 1) conservativeness, and (2) aggressiveness; business performance, two: (1) financial, and (2) operational; and performance measurement, one: the number of performance indicators measured. The findings show that UK Internet retailers are likely to concentrate their performance measurement more on financial, market-sales, and web-related indicators rather than customer and process. After controlling for variations of business size, the empirical results reveal that (1) more conservative retailers are likely to measure more performance indicators, (2) retailers using more performance indicators are likely to have better operational performance, and (3) less aggressiveness retailers tend to be associated with better financial performance. This study has provided evidence that strategic orientation is associated with the financial aspect of business performance, and performance measurement with the operational aspect of business performance. The results provide useful insights for Internet retailing managers, especially concerning the importance of performance measurement, and the choice of strategic orientation.     Evaluating websites using a practical quality model.

    Many of the existing website evaluation methods and criteria for evaluating website quality are not able to sufficiently assess the performance and quality of a website, and most of them focus on usability and accessibility. This thesis aims at proposing the website quality metrics and methods to measure the website interface and reputation quality factors. The evaluation metrics has a framework which can be viewed as a hierarchical tree with three levels. The first level is composed of five quality characteristics: Aesthetics, Ease of Use, Multimedia, Rich Content and Reputation. The second level breaks down the first level quality characteristics into sub-characteristics and the third level further breaks down the second level sub-characteristics into measurable criteria. This thesis is particularly concerned with two major quality characteristics: Aesthetics and Reputation, and also the several website measurable criteria (indicators) that now apply to almost all live websites. A website evaluation tool is provided by this study to measure website quality automatically. It includes a traversal unit, parsing unit, data metrics unit and user interface unit. Also some effective algorithms are used in each unit: data crawler, recursive, parser and data transmission. According to relative issues in previous research about website evaluation metrics, there are only a few of them that use same methods as this study to completely measure the website metrics, and highlight the entire website quality scores that meet the users’ requirements
