Energy, specifically that use fossil fuels, has play a massive roles in the industry. Therefore, the sustainability of energy will determine the success of the national industry development in the future. ISO 50001:2011 provides organization with management strategies to increase energy efficiency, improve energy performance using a systematic approach and thus reduce costs. This standard is an effective guideline for organization to identify and achieve continual improvements on energy management systems. As a technical institution attached to Ministry of Industry, Center for Agro Based Industry (CABI) takes an important roles to provide technical services regarding implementation of ISO 50001:2011 in industry. CABI has started the initiate stages by preparing certified personnel and thus improving their skill. Nevertheless, CABI has some difficulties regarding lack of cooperation with related parties which is affecting the experiences from those personnel and the preparation stages for providing technical services to industry. Keywords: energy management; energy efficiency in industry; sustainability; standard ISO 50001:201

Antimony-Bismuth Alloying : The Key to a Major Boost in the Efficiency of Lead-Free Perovskite-Inspired Photovoltaics

    Get PDF
The perovskite-inspired Cu2AgBiI6 (CABI) material has been gaining increasing momentum as photovoltaic (PV) absorber due to its low toxicity, intrinsic air stability, direct bandgap, and a high absorption coefficient in the range of 105 cm−1. However, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of existing CABI-based PVs is still seriously constrained by the presence of both intrinsic and surface defects. Herein, antimony (III) (Sb3+) is introduced into the octahedral lattice sites of the CABI structure, leading to CABI-Sb with larger crystalline domains than CABI. The alloying of Sb3+ with bismuth (III) (Bi3+) induces changes in the local structural symmetry that dramatically increase the formation energy of intrinsic defects. Light-intensity dependence and electron impedance spectroscopic studies show reduced trap-assisted recombination in the CABI-Sb PV devices. CABI-Sb solar cells feature a nearly 40% PCE enhancement (from 1.31% to 1.82%) with respect to the CABI devices mainly due to improvement in short-circuit current density. This work will promote future compositional design studies to enhance the intrinsic defect tolerance of next-generation wide-bandgap absorbers for high-performance and stable PVs.Peer reviewe

Human Impacts on Forest Biodiversity in Protected Walnut-Fruit Forests in Kyrgyzstan

    Get PDF
We used a spatially explicit model of forest dynamics, supported by empirical field data and socioeconomic data, to examine the impacts of human disturbances on a protected forest landscape in Kyrgyzstan. Local use of 27 fruit and nut species was recorded and modeled. Results indicated that in the presence of fuelwood cutting with or without grazing, species of high socioeconomic impor- tance such as Juglans regia, Malus spp., and Armeniaca vulgaris were largely eliminated from the landscape after 50–150 yr. In the absence of disturbance or in the presence of grazing only, decline of these species occurred at a much lower rate, owing to competi- tive interactions between tree species. This suggests that the current intensity of fuelwood harvesting is not sustainable. Conversely, cur- rent grazing intensities were found to have relatively little impact on forest structure and composition, and could potentially play a positive role in supporting regeneration of tree species. These results indicate that both positive and negative impacts on biodiversity can arise from human populations living within a protected area. Potentially, these could be reconciled through the development of participatory approaches to conservation management within this reserve, to ensure the maintenance of its high conservation value while meeting human needs

Breakdown of half-metallic ferromagnetism in zinc-blende II-V compounds

We investigated the electronic and magnetic properties of a series of zinc-blend II-V compounds by carrying out density-functional-theory calculations including spin-orbit couplings. Contrary to the case of CaN and CaP, the half-metallic characteristics of the II-V compounds such as CaSb and CaBi were found to be destroyed. Our analysis of the valence band structures of CaAs, CaSb, and CaBi revealed a critical role of the spin-orbit coupling interactions on the exchange-split band structure, thereby leading to breakdown of the half-metallic ferromagnetism for the systems with heavier group V elements in the zinc-blend II-V compounds

Genetic diversity of the rain tree (Albizia saman) in Colombian seasonally dry tropical forest for informing conservation and restoration interventions

    Get PDF
Albizia saman is a multipurpose tree species of seasonally dry tropical forests (SDTFs) of Mesoamerica and northern South America typically cultivated in silvopastoral and other agroforestry systems around the world, a trend that is bound to increase in light of multimillion hectare commitments for forest and landscape restoration. The effective conservation and sustainable use of A. saman requires detailed knowledge of its genetic diversity across its native distribution range of which surprisingly little is known to date. We assessed the genetic diversity and structure of A.saman across twelve representative locations of SDTF in Colombia, and how they may have been shaped by past climatic changes and human influence. We found four different genetic groups which may be the result of differentiation due to isolation of populations in preglacial times. The current distribution and mixture of genetic groups across STDF fragments we observed might be the result of range expansion of SDTFs during the last glacial period followed by range contraction during the Holocene and human‐influenced movement of germplasm associated with cattle ranching. Despite the fragmented state of the presumed natural A. saman stands we sampled, we did not find any signs of inbreeding, suggesting that gene flow is not jeopardized in humanized landscapes. However, further research is needed to assess potential deleterious effects of fragmentation on progeny. Climate change is not expected to seriously threaten the in situ persistence of A. saman populations and might present opportunities for future range expansion. However, the sourcing of germplasm for tree planting activities needs to be aligned with the genetic affinity of reference populations across the distribution of Colombian SDTFs. We identify priority source populations for in situ conservation based on their high genetic diversity, lack or limited signs of admixture, and/or genetic uniqueness
