    Incremental parsing algorithms for speech-editing mathematics and computer code

    The provision of speech control for editing plain language text has existed for a long time, but does not extend to structured content such as mathematics. The requirements of a user interface for a spoken mathematics editor are explored through the lens of an intuitive natural user interface (NUI) for speech control, the desired properties of which are based on a combination of existing literature on NUIs and intuitive user interfaces. An important aspect of an intuitive NUI is timely update of display of the content in response to editing actions. This is not feasible using batch parsing alone, and this issue will be more serious for larger documents such as computer program code. The solution is an incremental parser designed to work with operator precedence (OP) grammars. The contribution to knowledge provided by this thesis is to improve the efficiency in terms of processing time, of the OP incremental parsing algorithm developed by Heeman, and extend it to handle the distfix (mixfix) operators described by Attanayake to model brackets and mathematical functions. This is implemented successfully for the TalkMaths system and shows a greatly reduced response time compared with using batch scanning and parsing alone. The author is not aware of any other incremental OP parser that handles such operators. Furthermore, a proposal is made for modifications to the data structures produced by Attanayake's parser, along with appropriate adjustments to the incremental parser, that will in the future, facilitate application of OP grammar to program code or other structured content by changing the definition of its content language

    This report takes its name from the Computational Linguistics Feedback Forum (CLIFF), an informal discussion group for students and faculty. However the scope of the research covered in this report is broader than the title might suggest; this is the yearly report of the LINC Lab, the Language, Information and Computation Laboratory of the University of Pennsylvania. It may at first be hard to see the threads that bind together the work presented here, work by faculty, graduate students and postdocs in the Computer Science, Psychology, and Linguistics Departments, and the Institute for Research in Cognitive Science. It includes prototypical Natural Language fields such as: Combinatorial Categorial Grammars, Tree Adjoining Grammars, syntactic parsing and the syntax-semantics interface; but it extends to statistical methods, plan inference, instruction understanding, intonation, causal reasoning, free word order languages, geometric reasoning, medical informatics, connectionism, and language acquisition.     The application of message passing to concurrent programming

    The development of concurrency in computer systems will be critically reviewed and an alternative strategy proposed. This is a programming language designed along semantic principles, and it is based upon the treatment of concurrent processes as values within that language's universe of discourse. An asynchronous polymorphic message system is provided to enable co-existent processes to communicate freely. This is presented as a fundamental language construct, and it is completely general purpose, as all values, however complex, can be passed as messages. Various operations are also built into the language so as to permit processes to discover and examine one another. These permit the development of robust systems, where localised failures can be detected, and action can be taken to recover. The orthogonality of the design is discussed and its implementation in terms of an incremental compiler and abstract machine interpreter is outlined in some detail. This thesis hopes to demonstrate that message-oriented communication in a highly parallel system of processes is not only a natural form of expression, but is eminently practical, so long as the entities performing the communication are values in the languag

    High compression rate text summarization

    Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, 2008.Includes bibliographical references (p. 95-97).This thesis focuses on methods for condensing large documents into highly concise summaries, achieving compression rates on par with human writers. While the need for such summaries in the current age of information overload is increasing, the desired compression rate has thus far been beyond the reach of automatic summarization systems. The potency of our summarization methods is due to their in-depth modelling of document content in a probabilistic framework. We explore two types of document representation that capture orthogonal aspects of text content. The first represents the semantic properties mentioned in a document in a hierarchical Bayesian model. This method is used to summarize thousands of consumer reviews by identifying the product properties mentioned by multiple reviewers. The second representation captures discourse properties, modelling the connections between different segments of a document. This discriminatively trained model is employed to generate tables of contents for books and lecture transcripts.     Approximate text generation from non-hierarchical representations in a declarative framework

    This thesis is on Natural Language Generation. It describes a linguistic realisation system that translates the semantic information encoded in a conceptual graph into an English language sentence. The use of a non-hierarchically structured semantic representation (conceptual graphs) and an approximate matching between semantic structures allows us to investigate a more general version of the sentence generation problem where one is not pre-committed to a choice of the syntactically prominent elements in the initial semantics. We show clearly how the semantic structure is declaratively related to linguistically motivated syntactic representation — we use D-Tree Grammars which stem from work on Tree-Adjoining Grammars. The declarative specification of the mapping between semantics and syntax allows for different processing strategies to be exploited. A number of generation strategies have been considered: a pure topdown strategy and a chart-based generation technique which allows partially successful computations to be reused in other branches of the search space. Having a generator with increased paraphrasing power as a consequence of using non-hierarchical input and approximate matching raises the issue whether certain 'better' paraphrases can be generated before others.
