Combining Bluetooth Mesh and KNX : the best of both worlds

    Get PDF
Bluetooth Mesh (BT Mesh) is a promising wireless technology for building automation. At the same time, KNX is a well-established building automation system that has a vast installed base. Specifically, the strength of KNX lies in its proven semantic models. These models are the foundation for interoperability and the implementation of larger systems. The presented project demonstrates how a user can easily connect a new BT Mesh system to a well-established, wired KNX building automation system. Notably, the project achieves this through a self-developed stateless gateway, which allows controlling BT Mesh devices from the KNX network and vice versa. As a result, it is possible to leverage existing management systems from KNX building automation systems in BT Mesh networks. Furthermore, the project validates this concept using Home Assistant, a well- known open-source home automation platform and demonstrates, that heterogeneous KNX and BT Mesh systems are feasible

Case Study - IPv6 based building automation solution integration into an IPv4 Network Service Provider infrastructure

    Get PDF
The case study presents a case study describing an Internet Protocol (IP) version 6 (v6) introduction to an IPv4 Internet Service Provider (ISP) network infrastructure. The case study driver is an ISP willing to introduce a new “killer” service related to Internet of Things (IoT) style building automation. The provider and cooperation of third party companies specialized in building automation will provide the service. The ISP has to deliver the network access layer and to accommodate the building automation solution traffic throughout its network infrastructure. The third party companies are system integrators and building automation solution vendors. IPv6 is suitable for such solutions due to the following reasons. The operator can’t accommodate large number of IPv4 embedded devices in its current network due to the lack of address space and the fact that many of those will need clear 2 way IP communication channel. The Authors propose a strategy for IPv6 introduction into operator infrastructure based on the current network architecture present service portfolio and several transition mechanisms. The strategy has been applied in laboratory with setup close enough to the current operator’s network. The criterion for a successful experiment is full two-way IPv6 application layer connectivity between the IPv6 server and the IPv6 Internet of Things (IoT) cloud

Using choreographies to support the gamification process on the development of an application to reduce electricity costs

    Get PDF
Building automation systems contribute to reduce electricity costs by managing distributed energy resources in an efficient way. However, a large share of consumption cannot be optimized through automation alone, since it mainly depends on human interactions. Gamification can be used as one form of changing users’ behaviours [1], but its implementation does require assumptions on the behaviour patterns that need to be identified, encouraged, or discouraged. To tackle this problem, we propose a framework that joins building automation solutions with gamification techniques to enable behavioural demand response.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

An analysis of security issues in building automation systems

The purpose of Building Automation Systems (BAS) is to centralise the management of a wide range of building services, through the use of integrated protocol and communication media. Through the use of IP-based communication and encapsulated protocols, BAS are increasingly being connected to corporate networks and also being remotely accessed for management purposes, both for convenience and emergency purposes. These protocols, however, were not designed with security as a primary requirement, thus the majority of systems operate with sub-standard or non-existent security implementations, relying on security through obscurity. Research has been undertaken into addressing the shortfalls of security implementations in BAS, however defining the threats against BAS, and detection of these threats is an area that is particularly lacking. This paper presents an overview of the current security measures in BAS, outlining key issues, and methods that can be improved to protect cyber physical systems against the increasing threat of cyber terrorism and hacktivism. Future research aims to further evaluate and improve the detection systems used in BAS through first defining the threats and then applying and evaluating machine learning algorithms for traffic classification and IDS profiling capable of operating on resource constrained BAS

SEABASS: Symmetric-keychain Encryption and Authentication for Building Automation Systems

    Get PDF
There is an increasing security risk in Building Automation Systems (BAS) in that its communication is unprotected, resulting in the adversary having the capability to inject spurious commands to the actuators to alter the behaviour of BAS. The communication between the Human-Machine-Interface (HMI) and the controller (PLC) is vulnerable as there is no secret key being used to protect the authenticity, confidentiality and integrity of the sensor data and commands. We propose SEABASS, a lightweight key management scheme to distribute and manage session keys between HMI and PLCs, providing a secure communication channel between any two communicating devices in BAS through a symmetric-key based hash-chain encryption and authentication of message exchange. Our scheme facilitates automatic renewal of session keys periodically based on the use of a reversed hash-chain. A prototype was implemented using the BACnet/IP communication protocol and the preliminary results show that the symmetric keychain approach is lightweight and incurs low latency

Tässä opinnäytetyössä esitellään kiinteistöautomaation teoriaa ja osallistutaan Valkeakoskella sijaitsevan Valmet Technologies Oy:n jauhimia valmistavan Terätehtaan kiinteistöautomaation modernisoinnin projektiin samalla etsien tehtaalta erilaisia energianhallinnallisia säästökohteita. Ennen kiinteistöautomaatiojärjestelmän modernisoinnin suorittamista on tärkeää selvittää, mitä tulisi parantaa ja mihin kiinnittää huomiota modernisoinnissa. Vaihtoehtoisia kiinteistöautomaatiojärjestelmiä tutkittiin ja ratkaisut esitellään kahdelta eri valmistajalta. Tehtaan vaihtelevat olosuhteet luovat haasteellisen ympäristön kiinteistöautomaatiojärjestelmälle ja kenttälaitteille, joten selvitystyötä tehtiin nykyisen laitteiston kunnosta. Lopuksi pohditaan, kumpi kiinteistöautomaatiojärjestelmä sopii tehtaalle paremmin. Lisäksi käydään läpi tehtaalta löydetyt ongelmalliset energiaa kuluttavat kohteet sekä suositellaan parannuskeinoa. The aim of this thesis was to introduce the theory of building automation and to take part in to the modernization project of a building automation system at Terätehdas, which is owned by Valmet Technologies Oy in Valkeakoski, meanwhile surveying the plant as to energy management issues. Before the modernization of the building automation system was carried out, it was important to figure out the key points of consideration and improvement in the modernization project. An examination of alternative building automation systems was performed and as a conclusion, two systems are presented in this thesis from two different manufacturers. Because of the challenging environment at the plant for the building automation system and field devices due to varying conditions there, a condition assessment of the state of the devices was performed here as well. The right selection of the building automation system for the plant is discussed here as well. The issues found in energy management are presented here and a proposed decision is recommended
