    Control Strategies of DC–DC Converter in Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle

    There is a significant need to research and develop a compatible controller for the DC–DC converter used in fuel cells electric vehicles (EVs). Research has shown that fuel cells (FC) EVs have the potential of providing a far more promising performance in comparison to conventional combustion engine vehicles. This study aims to present a universal sliding mode control (SMC) technique to control the DC bus voltage under varying load conditions. Additionally, this research will utilize improved DC–DC converter topologies to boost the output voltage of the FCs. A DC–DC converter with a properly incorporated control scheme can be utilized to regulate the DC bus voltage–. A conventional linear controller, like a PID controller, is not suitable to be used as a controller to regulate the output voltage in the proposed application. This is due to the nonlinearity of the converter. Furthermore, this thesis will explore the use of a secondary power source which will be utilized during the start–up and transient condition of the FCEV. However, in this instance, a simple boost converter can be used as a reference to step–up the fuel cell output voltage. In terms of application, an FCEV requires stepping –up of the voltage through the use of a high power DC–DC converter or chopper. A control scheme must be developed to adjust the DC bus or load voltage to meet the vehicle requirements as well as to improve the overall efficiency of the FCEV. A simple SMC structure can be utilized to handle these issues and stabilize the output voltage of the DC–DC converter to maintain and establish a constant DC–link voltage during the load variations.     Advanced Statistical Modeling, Forecasting, and Fault Detection in Renewable Energy Systems

    Fault detection, control, and forecasting have a vital role in renewable energy systems (Photovoltaics (PV) and wind turbines (WTs)) to improve their productivity, ef?ciency, and safety, and to avoid expensive maintenance. For instance, the main crucial and challenging issue in solar and wind energy production is the volatility of intermittent power generation due mainly to weather conditions. This fact usually limits the integration of PV systems and WTs into the power grid. Hence, accurately forecasting power generation in PV and WTs is of great importance for daily/hourly efficient management of power grid production, delivery, and storage, as well as for decision-making on the energy market. Also, accurate and prompt fault detection and diagnosis strategies are required to improve efficiencies of renewable energy systems, avoid the high cost of maintenance, and reduce risks of fire hazards, which could affect both personnel and installed equipment.     H-GA-PSO Method for Tuning of a PID Controller for a Buck-Boost Converter Modeled with a New Method of Signal Flow Graph Technique

    In this paper, a new method of signal flow graph technique and Mason's gain formula are applied for extracting the model and transfer functions from control to output and from input to output of a buck-boost converter. In order to investigate necessity of a controller for the converter with assumed parameters, the frequency and time domain analysis is done and the open loop system characteristics are verified. In addition, the needed closed loop controlled system specifications are determined. Moreover, designing a controller for the mentioned converter system based on the extracted model is discussed. For this purpose, a proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller is designed and the hybrid of genetic algorithm (GA) and particle swarm optimization (PSO), called H-GA-PSO method is used for tuning of the PID controller. Finally, the simulation results are used to show the performance of the proposed modeling and regulation methods

    Modeling and identification of power electronic converters

    Nowadays, many industries are moving towards more electrical systems and components. This is done with the purpose of enhancing the efficiency of their systems while being environmentally friendlier and sustainable. Therefore, the development of power electronic systems is one of the most important points of this transition. Many manufacturers have improved their equipment and processes in order to satisfy the new necessities of the industries (aircraft, automotive, aerospace, telecommunication, etc.). For the particular case of the More Electric Aircraft (MEA), there are several power converters, inverters and filters that are usually acquired from different manufacturers. These are switched mode power converters that feed multiple loads, being a critical element in the transmission systems. In some cases, these manufacturers do not provide the sufficient information regarding the functionality of the devices such as DC/DC power converters, rectifiers, inverters or filters. Consequently, there is the need to model and identify the performance of these components to allow the aforementioned industries to develop models for the design stage, for predictive maintenance, for detecting possible failures modes, and to have a better control over the electrical system. Thus, the main objective of this thesis is to develop models that are able to describe the behavior of power electronic converters, whose parameters and/or topology are unknown. The algorithms must be replicable and they should work in other types of converters that are used in the power electronics field. The thesis is divided in two main cores, which are the parameter identification for white-box models and the black-box modeling of power electronics devices. The proposed approaches are based on optimization algorithms and deep learning techniques that use non-intrusive measurements to obtain a set of parameters or generate a model, respectively. In both cases, the algorithms are trained and tested using real data gathered from converters used in aircrafts and electric vehicles. This thesis also presents how the proposed methodologies can be applied to more complex power systems and for prognostics tasks. Concluding, this thesis aims to provide algorithms that allow industries to obtain realistic and accurate models of the components that they are using in their electrical systems.En la actualidad, el uso de sistemas y componentes eléctricos complejos se extiende a múltiples sectores industriales. Esto se hace con el propósito de mejorar su eficiencia y, en consecuencia, ser más sostenibles y amigables con el medio ambiente. Por tanto, el desarrollo de sistemas electrónicos de potencia es uno de los puntos más importantes de esta transición. Muchos fabricantes han mejorado sus equipos y procesos para satisfacer las nuevas necesidades de las industrias (aeronáutica, automotriz, aeroespacial, telecomunicaciones, etc.). Para el caso particular de los aviones más eléctricos (MEA, por sus siglas en inglés), existen varios convertidores de potencia, inversores y filtros que suelen adquirirse a diferentes fabricantes. Se trata de convertidores de potencia de modo conmutado que alimentan múltiples cargas, siendo un elemento crítico en los sistemas de transmisión. En algunos casos, estos fabricantes no proporcionan la información suficiente sobre la funcionalidad de los dispositivos como convertidores de potencia DC-DC, rectificadores, inversores o filtros. En consecuencia, existe la necesidad de modelar e identificar el desempeño de estos componentes para permitir que las industrias mencionadas desarrollan modelos para la etapa de diseño, para el mantenimiento predictivo, para la detección de posibles modos de fallas y para tener un mejor control del sistema eléctrico. Así, el principal objetivo de esta tesis es desarrollar modelos que sean capaces de describir el comportamiento de un convertidor de potencia, cuyos parámetros y/o topología se desconocen. Los algoritmos deben ser replicables y deben funcionar en otro tipo de convertidores que se utilizan en el campo de la electrónica de potencia. La tesis se divide en dos núcleos principales, que son la identificación de parámetros de los convertidores y el modelado de caja negra (black-box) de dispositivos electrónicos de potencia. Los enfoques propuestos se basan en algoritmos de optimización y técnicas de aprendizaje profundo que utilizan mediciones no intrusivas de las tensiones y corrientes de los convertidores para obtener un conjunto de parámetros o generar un modelo, respectivamente. En ambos casos, los algoritmos se entrenan y prueban utilizando datos reales recopilados de convertidores utilizados en aviones y vehículos eléctricos. Esta tesis también presenta cómo las metodologías propuestas se pueden aplicar a sistemas eléctricos más complejos y para tareas de diagnóstico. En conclusión, esta tesis tiene como objetivo proporcionar algoritmos que permitan a las industrias obtener modelos realistas y precisos de los componentes que están utilizando en sus sistemas eléctricos.Postprint (published version

    STABILITY IMPROVEMENTS FOR GENERALIZED AVERAGE-VALUE MODEL OF DC-DC CONVERTERS

    Power electronics have a significant role in modern electrical devices, for instance, hybrid electric vehicles. Power electronics are the technology in between the source and the load circuits and can convert the power from dc to ac or from dc to ac. There are also many types of dc-dc converters, like such as boost and buck converters, which exhibit switching ripple behavior. A boost converter increases the output voltage (with respect to the input voltage) and reduces the output current. A buck converter decreases the output voltage and increases the output current. Many models are used to predict the behavior of the boost and buck converters. The detailed (DET), state-space averaged (SSA), and generalized averaging method (GAM) models are capable of predicting the average behavior of dc-dc converters. For DET and GAM models, the rippling behavior can also be predicted. These models differ in terms of required run time, existence of constant equilibrium points, and accuracy. The DET model has a long run time and does not have constant equilibrium, but it is very accurate. The SSA technique is a mathematical and time-invariant model that capable of describing the behavior of a dc-dc boost converters. It can derive the small signal ac equations of a switching converter and is used to illustrate the average behavior of any linear or nonlinear system in converters. The SSA does not take extensive runtime simulation and has constant equilibrium points, and can be applied to continuous, discrete and sample data systems. The GAM model can predict the average and ripple behavior in power electronic systems and has constant equilibrium and fast run time. However, it has a numerical stability issue. The integrator stabilized multifrequency averaging (ISMFA) model is employed to solve the stability issue in the GAM model, but it is a complicated dynamic method and has restrictions in its process. In the present study, a simplified but stable GAM model is introduced to predict the average and ripple behavior of boost dc-dc converters and to overcome the limitations of other methods. In this work, the stabilized GAM model has been used for a dc-dc boost converters. The stability of the proposed model is analyzed. The performance of the improved GAM model is compared with the DET, SSA, and GAM models. The results show that the stabilized GAM model is stable with the additional poles created by the GAM assignable by parameter choice. The new GAM model predicts the same results as the existing GAM method without the underlying stability concerns. The stabilized GAM model exhibits constant ii equilibrium point and requires significantly lower run times than the DET model, but it is also able to predict the ripple performance of the converter. The stabilized GAM model does not take a long run time, is less complicated, has fewer restrictions, has constant equilibrium and internal stability, and has more straightforward implementation than other models, like the ISMFA model. It represents a suitable alternative to DET models when high accuracy simulations are desired without long simulation run times

    Performance of Positive Buck-Boost Converter with Mode Select Circuit and Feed-Forward Techniques Using Fuzzy Logic Controller

The portable devices development of semiconductor manufacturing technology, conversion efficiency, power consumption, and the size of devices have become the most important design criteria of switching power converters. For portable applications better conveniences extension of battery life and improves the conversion efficiency of power converters .It is essential to develop accurate switching power converters, which can reduce more wasted power energy. The proposed topology can achieve faster transient responses when the supply voltages are changed for the converter by making use of the feed forward network .With mode select circuit the conduction & switching losses are reduced the positive buck–boost converter operate in buck, buck–boost, or boost converter. By adding feed-forward techniques, the proposed converter can improve transient response when the supply voltages are changed.     Pem fuel cell modeling and converters design for a 48 v dc power bus

    Fuel cells (FC) are electrochemical devices that directly convert the chemical energy of a fuel into electricity. Power systems based on proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) technology have been the object of increasing attention in recent years as they appear very promising in both stationary and mobile applications due to their high efficiency, low operating temperature allowing fast startup, high power density, solid electrolyte, long cell and stack life, low corrosion, excellent dynamic response with respect to the other FCs, and nonpolluting emissions to the environment if the hydrogen is obtained from renewable sources. The output-voltage characteristic in a PEMFC is limited by the mechanical devices which are used for regulating the air flow in its cathode, the hydrogen flow in its anode, its inner temperature, and the humidity of the air supplied to it. Usually, the FC time constants are dominated by the fuel delivery system, in particular by the slow dynamics of the compressor responsible for supplying the oxygen. As a consequence, a fast load transient demand could cause a high voltage drop in a short time known as oxygen starvation phenomenon that is harmful for the FC. Thus, FCs are considered as a slow dynamic response equipment with respect to the load transient requirements. Therefore, batteries, ultracapacitors or other auxiliary power sources are needed to support the operation of the FC in order to ensure a fast response to any load power transient. The resulting systems, known as FC hybrid systems, can limit the slope of the current or the power generated by the FC with the use of current-controlled dc-dc converters. In this way, the reactant gas starvation phenomena can be avoided and the system can operate with higher efficiency. The purpose of this thesis is the design of a DC-DC converter suitable to interconnect all the different elements in a PEMFC-hybrid 48-V DC bus. Since the converter could be placed between elements with very different voltage levels, a buck-boost structure has been selected. Especially to fulfill the low ripple requirements of the PEMFCs, but also those of the auxiliary storage elements and loads, our structure has inductors in series at both its input and its output. Magnetically coupling these inductors and adding a damping network to its intermediate capacitor we have designed an easily controllable converter with second-order-buck-like dominant dynamics. This new proposed topology has high efficiency and wide bandwidth acting either as a voltage or as a current regulator. The magnetic coupling allows to control with similar performances the input or the output inductor currents. This characteristic is very useful because the designed current-controlled converter is able to withstand shortcircuits at its output and, when connected to the FC, it facilitates to regulate the current extracted from the FC to avoid the oxygen starvation phenomenon. Testing in a safe way the converter connected to the FC required to build an FC simulator that was subsequently improved by developing an emulator that offered real-time processing and oxygen-starvation indication. To study the developed converters and emulators with different brands of PEMFCs it was necessary to reactivate long-time inactive Palcan FCs. Since the results provided by the manual reactivation procedure were unsatisfactory, an automatic reactivation system has been developed as a complementary study of the thesis.En esta tesis se avanzo en el diseño de un bus DC de 48 V que utiliza como elemento principal de generación de energía eléctrica una pila de combustible.     Fast‐converging robust PR‐P controller designed by using symmetrical pole placement method for current control of interleaved buck converter‐based PV emulator

    In this study, the interleaved buck converter-based photovoltaic (PV) emulator current control is presented. A proportional-resonant-proportional (PR-P) controller is designed to resolve the drawbacks of conventional PI controllers in terms of phase management, which means balancing currents evenly between active phases to avoid thermally stressing and provide optimal ripple cancelation in the presence of parameter uncertainties. The resonant path of the controller (PR) with a constant proportional unity gain is designed considering the changing dynamics of a notch filter by pole placement method (adding mutually complementary poles to the notch transfer function) at PWM switching frequency. The proportional gain path (P) of the controller is used to determine the compatibility of the controller with parameter uncertainty of the phases and designed by utilizing loop-shaping method. The proposed controller shows superior performance in terms of 10 times faster-converging transient response, zero steady-state error with significant reduction in current ripple. Equal load sharing that constitutes the primary concern in multiphase converters is achieved with the proposed controller. Implementing of robust control theory involving comprehensive time and frequency domain analysis reveals 13% improvement in the robust stability margin and 12-degree bigger phase toleration with the PR-P controller. In addition to these, the proposed unconventional design process of the controller reduces the computational complexity and provides cost-effectiveness and simple implementation. Moreover, implementing of auxiliary resistor-capacitor (RC) circuits parallel with the inductors to sense the current in each phase removes the need for current measurement sensors that contribute to overall cost of the system
