Face recognition technologies for evidential evaluation of video traces
Human recognition from video traces is an important task in forensic investigations and evidence evaluations. Compared with other biometric traits, face is one of the most popularly used modalities for human recognition due to the fact that its collection is non-intrusive and requires less cooperation from the subjects. Moreover, face images taken at a long distance can still provide reasonable resolution, while most biometric modalities, such as iris and fingerprint, do not have this merit. In this chapter, we discuss automatic face recognition technologies for evidential evaluations of video traces. We first introduce the general concepts in both forensic and automatic face recognition , then analyse the difficulties in face recognition from videos . We summarise and categorise the approaches for handling different uncontrollable factors in difficult recognition conditions. Finally we discuss some challenges and trends in face recognition research in both forensics and biometrics . Given its merits tested in many deployed systems and great potential in other emerging applications, considerable research and development efforts are expected to be devoted in face recognition in the near future
Structured Light-Based 3D Reconstruction System for Plants.
Camera-based 3D reconstruction of physical objects is one of the most popular computer vision trends in recent years. Many systems have been built to model different real-world subjects, but there is lack of a completely robust system for plants. This paper presents a full 3D reconstruction system that incorporates both hardware structures (including the proposed structured light system to enhance textures on object surfaces) and software algorithms (including the proposed 3D point cloud registration and plant feature measurement). This paper demonstrates the ability to produce 3D models of whole plants created from multiple pairs of stereo images taken at different viewing angles, without the need to destructively cut away any parts of a plant. The ability to accurately predict phenotyping features, such as the number of leaves, plant height, leaf size and internode distances, is also demonstrated. Experimental results show that, for plants having a range of leaf sizes and a distance between leaves appropriate for the hardware design, the algorithms successfully predict phenotyping features in the target crops, with a recall of 0.97 and a precision of 0.89 for leaf detection and less than a 13-mm error for plant size, leaf size and internode distance

High-speed multi-dimensional relative navigation for uncooperative space objects
This work proposes a high-speed Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) based navigation architecture that is appropriate for uncooperative relative space navigation applications. In contrast to current solutions that exploit 3D LIDAR data, our architecture transforms the odometry problem from the 3D space into multiple 2.5D ones and completes the odometry problem by utilizing a recursive filtering scheme. Trials evaluate several current state-of-the-art 2D keypoint detection and local feature description methods as well as recursive filtering techniques on a number of simulated but credible scenarios that involve a satellite model developed by Thales Alenia Space (France). Most appealing performance is attained by the 2D keypoint detector Good Features to Track (GFFT) combined with the feature descriptor KAZE, that are further combined with either the H∞ or the Kalman recursive filter. Experimental results demonstrate that compared to current algorithms, the GFTT/KAZE combination is highly appealing affording one order of magnitude more accurate odometry and a very low processing burden, which depending on the competitor method, may exceed one order of magnitude faster computation
End-to-end weakly-supervised semantic alignment
We tackle the task of semantic alignment where the goal is to compute dense
semantic correspondence aligning two images depicting objects of the same
category. This is a challenging task due to large intra-class variation,
changes in viewpoint and background clutter. We present the following three
principal contributions. First, we develop a convolutional neural network
architecture for semantic alignment that is trainable in an end-to-end manner
from weak image-level supervision in the form of matching image pairs. The
outcome is that parameters are learnt from rich appearance variation present in
different but semantically related images without the need for tedious manual
annotation of correspondences at training time. Second, the main component of
this architecture is a differentiable soft inlier scoring module, inspired by
the RANSAC inlier scoring procedure, that computes the quality of the alignment
based on only geometrically consistent correspondences thereby reducing the
effect of background clutter. Third, we demonstrate that the proposed approach
achieves state-of-the-art performance on multiple standard benchmarks for

Robust Minutiae Extractor: Integrating Deep Networks and Fingerprint Domain Knowledge
We propose a fully automatic minutiae extractor, called MinutiaeNet, based on
deep neural networks with compact feature representation for fast comparison of
minutiae sets. Specifically, first a network, called CoarseNet, estimates the
minutiae score map and minutiae orientation based on convolutional neural
network and fingerprint domain knowledge (enhanced image, orientation field,
and segmentation map). Subsequently, another network, called FineNet, refines
the candidate minutiae locations based on score map. We demonstrate the
effectiveness of using the fingerprint domain knowledge together with the deep
networks. Experimental results on both latent (NIST SD27) and plain (FVC 2004)
public domain fingerprint datasets provide comprehensive empirical support for
the merits of our method. Further, our method finds minutiae sets that are
better in terms of precision and recall in comparison with state-of-the-art on
these two datasets. Given the lack of annotated fingerprint datasets with
minutiae ground truth, the proposed approach to robust minutiae detection will
be useful to train network-based fingerprint matching algorithms as well as for
evaluating fingerprint individuality at scale. MinutiaeNet is implemented in

Structure Preserving Large Imagery Reconstruction
With the explosive growth of web-based cameras and mobile devices, billions
of photographs are uploaded to the internet. We can trivially collect a huge
number of photo streams for various goals, such as image clustering, 3D scene
reconstruction, and other big data applications. However, such tasks are not
easy due to the fact the retrieved photos can have large variations in their
view perspectives, resolutions, lighting, noises, and distortions.
Fur-thermore, with the occlusion of unexpected objects like people, vehicles,
it is even more challenging to find feature correspondences and reconstruct
re-alistic scenes. In this paper, we propose a structure-based image completion
algorithm for object removal that produces visually plausible content with
consistent structure and scene texture. We use an edge matching technique to
infer the potential structure of the unknown region. Driven by the estimated
structure, texture synthesis is performed automatically along the estimated
curves. We evaluate the proposed method on different types of images: from
highly structured indoor environment to natural scenes. Our experimental
results demonstrate satisfactory performance that can be potentially used for
subsequent big data processing, such as image localization, object retrieval,
and scene reconstruction. Our experiments show that this approach achieves
favorable results that outperform existing state-of-the-art techniques
Computerized Analysis of Magnetic Resonance Images to Study Cerebral Anatomy in Developing Neonates
The study of cerebral anatomy in developing neonates is of great importance for
the understanding of brain development during the early period of life. This
dissertation therefore focuses on three challenges in the modelling of cerebral
anatomy in neonates during brain development. The methods that have been
developed all use Magnetic Resonance Images (MRI) as source data.
To facilitate study of vascular development in the neonatal period, a set of image
analysis algorithms are developed to automatically extract and model cerebral
vessel trees. The whole process consists of cerebral vessel tracking from
automatically placed seed points, vessel tree generation, and vasculature
registration and matching. These algorithms have been tested on clinical Time-of-
Flight (TOF) MR angiographic datasets.
To facilitate study of the neonatal cortex a complete cerebral cortex segmentation
and reconstruction pipeline has been developed. Segmentation of the neonatal
cortex is not effectively done by existing algorithms designed for the adult brain
because the contrast between grey and white matter is reversed. This causes pixels
containing tissue mixtures to be incorrectly labelled by conventional methods. The
neonatal cortical segmentation method that has been developed is based on a novel
expectation-maximization (EM) method with explicit correction for mislabelled
partial volume voxels. Based on the resulting cortical segmentation, an implicit
surface evolution technique is adopted for the reconstruction of the cortex in
neonates. The performance of the method is investigated by performing a detailed
landmark study.
To facilitate study of cortical development, a cortical surface registration algorithm
for aligning the cortical surface is developed. The method first inflates extracted
cortical surfaces and then performs a non-rigid surface registration using free-form
deformations (FFDs) to remove residual alignment. Validation experiments using
data labelled by an expert observer demonstrate that the method can capture local
changes and follow the growth of specific sulcus
Peaks detection and alignment for mass spectrometry data
The goal of this paper is to review existing methods for protein mass spectrometry data analysis, and to present a new methodology for automatic extraction of significant peaks (biomarkers). For the pre-processing step required for data from MALDI-TOF or SELDI- TOF spectra, we use a purely nonparametric approach that combines stationary invariant wavelet transform for noise removal and penalized spline quantile regression for baseline correction. We further present a multi-scale spectra alignment technique that is based on identification of statistically significant peaks from a set of spectra. This method allows one to find common peaks in a set of spectra that can subsequently be mapped to individual proteins. This may serve as useful biomarkers in medical applications, or as individual features for further multidimensional statistical analysis.
