    Seamless, Static Multi-Texturing of 3D Meshes

    In the context of 3D reconstruction, we present a static multi-texturing system yielding a seamless texture atlas calculated by combining the colour information from several photos from the same subject covering most of its surface. These pictures can be provided by shooting just one camera several times when reconstructing a static object, or a set of synchronized cameras, when dealing with a human or any other moving object. We suppress the colour seams due to image misalignments and irregular lighting conditions that multi-texturing approaches typically suffer from, while minimizing the blurring effect introduced by colour blending techniques. Our system is robust enough to compensate for the almost inevitable inaccuracies of 3D meshes obtained with visual hull–based techniques: errors in silhouette segmentation, inherently bad handling of concavities, etc

    Active modelling of virtual humans

    This thesis provides a complete framework that enables the creation of photorealistic 3D human models in real-world environments. The approach allows a non-expert user to use any digital capture device to obtain four images of an individual and create a personalised 3D model, for multimedia applications. To achieve this, it is necessary that the system is automatic and that the reconstruction process is flexible to account for information that is not available or incorrectly captured. In this approach the individual is automatically extracted from the environment using constrained active B-spline templates that are scaled and automatically initialised using only image information. These templates incorporate the energy minimising framework for Active Contour Models, providing a suitable and flexible method to deal with the adjustments in pose an individual can adopt. The final states of the templates describe the individual’s shape. The contours in each view are combined to form a 3D B-spline surface that characterises an individual’s maximal silhouette equivalent. The surface provides a mould that contains sufficient information to allow for the active deformation of an underlying generic human model. This modelling approach is performed using a novel technique that evolves active-meshes to 3D for deforming the underlying human model, while adaptively constraining it to preserve its existing structure. The active-mesh approach incorporates internal constraints that maintain the structural relationship of the vertices of the human model, while external forces deform the model congruous to the 3D surface mould. The strength of the internal constraints can be reduced to allow the model to adopt the exact shape of the bounding volume or strengthened to preserve the internal structure, particularly in areas of high detail. This novel implementation provides a uniform framework that can be simply and automatically applied to the entire human model

    Development of the components of a low cost, distributed facial virtual conferencing system

    This thesis investigates the development of a low cost, component based facial virtual conferencing system. The design is decomposed into an encoding phase and a decoding phase, which communicate with each other via a network connection. The encoding phase is composed of three components: model acquisition (which handles avatar generation), pose estimation and expression analysis. Audio is not considered part of the encoding and decoding process, and as such is not evaluated. The model acquisition component is implemented using a visual hull reconstruction algorithm that is able to reconstruct real-world objects using only sets of images of the object as input. The object to be reconstructed is assumed to lie in a bounding volume of voxels. The reconstruction process involves the following stages: - Space carving for basic shape extraction; - Isosurface extraction to remove voxels not part of the surface of the reconstruction; - Mesh connection to generate a closed, connected polyhedral mesh; - Texture generation. Texturing is achieved by Gouraud shading the reconstruction with a vertex colour map; - Mesh decimation to simplify the object. The original algorithm has complexity O(n), but suffers from an inability to reconstruct concave surfaces that do not form part of the visual hull of the object. A novel extension to this algorithm based on Normalised Cross Correlation (NCC) is proposed to overcome this problem. An extension to speed up traditional NCC evaluations is proposed which reduces the NCC search space from a 2D search problem down to a single evaluation. Pose estimation and expression analysis are performed by tracking six fiducial points on the face of a subject. A tracking algorithm is developed that uses Normalised Cross Correlation to facilitate robust tracking that is invariant to changing lighting conditions, rotations and scaling. Pose estimation involves the recovery of the head position and orientation through the tracking of the triangle formed by the subject's eyebrows and nose tip. A rule-based evaluation of points that are tracked around the subject's mouth forms the basis of the expression analysis. A user assisted feedback loop and caching mechanism is used to overcome tracking errors due to fast motion or occlusions. The NCC tracker is shown to achieve a tracking performance of 10 fps when tracking the six fiducial points. The decoding phase is divided into 3 tasks, namely: avatar movement, expression generation and expression management. Avatar movement is implemented using the base VR system. Expression generation is facilitated using a Vertex Interpolation Deformation method. A weighting system is proposed for expression management. Its function is to gradually transform from one expression to the next. The use of the vertex interpolation method allows real-time deformations of the avatar representation, achieving 16 fps when applied to a model consisting of 7500 vertices. An Expression Parameter Lookup Table (EPLT) facilitates an independent mapping between the two phases. It defines a list of generic expressions that are known to the system and associates an Expression ID with each one. For each generic expression, it relates the expression analysis rules for any subject with the expression generation parameters for any avatar model. The result is that facial expression replication between any subject and avatar combination can be performed by transferring only the Expression ID from the encoder application to the decoder application. The ideas developed in the thesis are demonstrated in an implementation using the CoRgi Virtual Reality system.     Analysis and Construction of Engaging Facial Forms and Expressions: Interdisciplinary Approaches from Art, Anatomy, Engineering, Cultural Studies, and Psychology

    The topic of this dissertation is the anatomical, psychological, and cultural examination of a human face in order to effectively construct an anatomy-driven 3D virtual face customization and action model. In order to gain a broad perspective of all aspects of a face, theories and methodology from the fields of art, engineering, anatomy, psychology, and cultural studies have been analyzed and implemented. The computer generated facial customization and action model were designed based on the collected data. Using this customization system, culturally-specific attractive face in Korean popular culture, “kot-mi-nam (flower-like beautiful guy),” was modeled and analyzed as a case study. The “kot-mi-nam” phenomenon is overviewed in textual, visual, and contextual aspects, which reveals the gender- and sexuality-fluidity of its masculinity. The analysis and the actual development of the model organically co-construct each other requiring an interwoven process. Chapter 1 introduces anatomical studies of a human face, psychological theories of face recognition and an attractive face, and state-of-the-art face construction projects in the various fields. Chapter 2 and 3 present the Bezier curve-based 3D facial customization (BCFC) and Multi-layered Facial Action Model (MFAF) based on the analysis of human anatomy, to achieve a cost-effective yet realistic quality of facial animation without using 3D scanned data. In the experiments, results for the facial customization for gender, race, fat, and age showed that BCFC achieved enhanced performance of 25.20% compared to existing program Facegen , and 44.12% compared to Facial Studio. The experimental results also proved the realistic quality and effectiveness of MFAM compared with blend shape technique by enhancing 2.87% and 0.03% of facial area for happiness and anger expressions per second, respectively. In Chapter 4, according to the analysis based on BCFC, the 3D face of an average kot-mi-nam is close to gender neutral (male: 50.38%, female: 49.62%), and Caucasian (66.42-66.40%). Culturally-specific images can be misinterpreted in different cultures, due to their different languages, histories, and contexts. This research demonstrates that facial images can be affected by the cultural tastes of the makers and can also be interpreted differently by viewers in different cultures

    Realistic Visualization of Animated Virtual Cloth

    Photo-realistic rendering of real-world objects is a broad research area with applications in various different areas, such as computer generated films, entertainment, e-commerce and so on. Within photo-realistic rendering, the rendering of cloth is a subarea which involves many important aspects, ranging from material surface reflection properties and macroscopic self-shadowing to animation sequence generation and compression. In this thesis, besides an introduction to the topic plus a broad overview of related work, different methods to handle major aspects of cloth rendering are described. Material surface reflection properties play an important part to reproduce the look & feel of materials, that is, to identify a material only by looking at it. The BTF (bidirectional texture function), as a function of viewing and illumination direction, is an appropriate representation of reflection properties. It captures effects caused by the mesostructure of a surface, like roughness, self-shadowing, occlusion, inter-reflections, subsurface scattering and color bleeding. Unfortunately a BTF data set of a material consists of hundreds to thousands of images, which exceeds current memory size of personal computers by far. This work describes the first usable method to efficiently compress and decompress a BTF data for rendering at interactive to real-time frame rates. It is based on PCA (principal component analysis) of the BTF data set. While preserving the important visual aspects of the BTF, the achieved compression rates allow the storage of several different data sets in main memory of consumer hardware, while maintaining a high rendering quality. Correct handling of complex illumination conditions plays another key role for the realistic appearance of cloth. Therefore, an upgrade of the BTF compression and rendering algorithm is described, which allows the support of distant direct HDR (high-dynamic-range) illumination stored in environment maps. To further enhance the appearance, macroscopic self-shadowing has to be taken into account. For the visualization of folds and the life-like 3D impression, these kind of shadows are absolutely necessary. This work describes two methods to compute these shadows. The first is seamlessly integrated into the illumination part of the rendering algorithm and optimized for static meshes. Furthermore, another method is proposed, which allows the handling of dynamic objects. It uses hardware-accelerated occlusion queries for the visibility determination. In contrast to other algorithms, the presented algorithm, despite its simplicity, is fast and produces less artifacts than other methods. As a plus, it incorporates changeable distant direct high-dynamic-range illumination. The human perception system is the main target of any computer graphics application and can also be treated as part of the rendering pipeline. Therefore, optimization of the rendering itself can be achieved by analyzing human perception of certain visual aspects in the image. As a part of this thesis, an experiment is introduced that evaluates human shadow perception to speedup shadow rendering and provides optimization approaches. Another subarea of cloth visualization in computer graphics is the animation of the cloth and avatars for presentations. This work also describes two new methods for automatic generation and compression of animation sequences. The first method to generate completely new, customizable animation sequences, is based on the concept of finding similarities in animation frames of a given basis sequence. Identifying these similarities allows jumps within the basis sequence to generate endless new sequences. Transmission of any animated 3D data over bandwidth-limited channels, like extended networks or to less powerful clients requires efficient compression schemes. The second method included in this thesis in the animation field is a geometry data compression scheme. Similar to the BTF compression, it uses PCA in combination with clustering algorithms to segment similar moving parts of the animated objects to achieve high compression rates in combination with a very exact reconstruction quality.Realistische Visualisierung von animierter virtueller Kleidung Das photorealistisches Rendering realer GegenstĂ€nde ist ein weites Forschungsfeld und hat Anwendungen in vielen Bereichen. Dazu zĂ€hlen Computer generierte Filme (CGI), die Unterhaltungsindustrie und E-Commerce. Innerhalb dieses Forschungsbereiches ist das Rendern von photorealistischer Kleidung ein wichtiger Bestandteil. Hier reichen die wichtigen Aspekte, die es zu berĂŒcksichtigen gilt, von optischen Materialeigenschaften ĂŒber makroskopische Selbstabschattung bis zur Animationsgenerierung und -kompression. In dieser Arbeit wird, neben der EinfĂŒhrung in das Thema, ein weiter Überblick ĂŒber Ă€hnlich gelagerte Arbeiten gegeben. Der Schwerpunkt der Arbeit liegt auf den wichtigen Aspekten der virtuellen Kleidungsvisualisierung, die oben beschrieben wurden. Die optischen Reflektionseigenschaften von MaterialoberflĂ€chen spielen eine wichtige Rolle, um das so genannte look & feel von Materialien zu charakterisieren. Hierbei kann ein Material vom Nutzer identifiziert werden, ohne dass er es direkt anfassen muss. Die BTF (bidirektionale Texturfunktion)ist eine Funktion die abhĂ€ngig von der Blick- und Beleuchtungsrichtung ist. Daher ist sie eine angemessene ReprĂ€sentation von Reflektionseigenschaften. Sie enthĂ€lt Effekte wie Rauheit, Selbstabschattungen, Verdeckungen, Interreflektionen, Streuung und Farbbluten, die durch die Mesostruktur der OberflĂ€che hervorgerufen werden. Leider besteht ein BTF Datensatz eines Materials aus hunderten oder tausenden von Bildern und sprengt damit herkömmliche Hauptspeicher in Computern bei weitem. Diese Arbeit beschreibt die erste praktikable Methode, um BTF Daten effizient zu komprimieren, zu speichern und fĂŒr Echtzeitanwendungen zum Visualisieren wieder zu dekomprimieren. Die Methode basiert auf der Principal Component Analysis (PCA), die Daten nach Signifikanz ordnet. WĂ€hrend die PCA die entscheidenen visuellen Aspekte der BTF erhĂ€lt, können mit ihrer Hilfe Kompressionsraten erzielt werden, die es erlauben mehrere BTF Materialien im Hauptspeicher eines Consumer PC zu verwalten. Dies erlaubt ein High-Quality Rendering. Korrektes Verwenden von komplexen Beleuchtungssituationen spielt eine weitere, wichtige Rolle, um Kleidung realistisch erscheinen zu lassen. Daher wird zudem eine Erweiterung des BTF Kompressions- und Renderingalgorithmuses erlĂ€utert, die den Einsatz von High-Dynamic Range (HDR) Beleuchtung erlaubt, die in environment maps gespeichert wird. Um die realistische Erscheinung der Kleidung weiter zu unterstĂŒtzen, muss die makroskopische Selbstabschattung integriert werden. FĂŒr die Visualisierung von Falten und den lebensechten 3D Eindruck ist diese Art von Schatten absolut notwendig. Diese Arbeit beschreibt daher auch zwei Methoden, diese Schatten schnell und effizient zu berechnen. Die erste ist nahtlos in den Beleuchtungspart des obigen BTF Renderingalgorithmuses integriert und fĂŒr statische Geometrien optimiert. Die zweite Methode behandelt dynamische Objekte. Dazu werden hardwarebeschleunigte Occlusion Queries verwendet, um die Sichtbarkeitsberechnung durchzufĂŒhren. Diese Methode ist einerseits simpel und leicht zu implementieren, anderseits ist sie schnell und produziert weniger Artefakte, als vergleichbare Methoden. ZusĂ€tzlich ist die Verwendung von verĂ€nderbarer, entfernter HDR Beleuchtung integriert. Das menschliche Wahrnehmungssystem ist das eigentliche Ziel jeglicher Anwendung in der Computergrafik und kann daher selbst als Teil einer erweiterten Rendering Pipeline gesehen werden. Daher kann das Rendering selbst optimiert werden, wenn man die menschliche Wahrnehmung verschiedener visueller Aspekte der berechneten Bilder analysiert. Teil der vorliegenden Arbeit ist die Beschreibung eines Experimentes, das menschliche Schattenwahrnehmung untersucht, um das Rendern der Schatten zu beschleunigen. Ein weiteres Teilgebiet der Kleidungsvisualisierung in der Computergrafik ist die Animation der Kleidung und von Avataren fĂŒr PrĂ€sentationen. Diese Arbeit beschreibt zwei neue Methoden auf diesem Teilgebiet. Einmal ein Algorithmus, der fĂŒr die automatische Generierung neuer Animationssequenzen verwendet werden kann und zum anderen einen Kompressionsalgorithmus fĂŒr eben diese Sequenzen. Die automatische Generierung von völlig neuen, anpassbaren Animationen basiert auf dem Konzept der Ähnlichkeitssuche. Hierbei werden die einzelnen Schritte von gegebenen Basisanimationen auf Ähnlichkeiten hin untersucht, die zum Beispiel die Geschwindigkeiten einzelner Objektteile sein können. Die Identifizierung dieser Ähnlichkeiten erlaubt dann SprĂŒnge innerhalb der Basissequenz, die dazu benutzt werden können, endlose, neue Sequenzen zu erzeugen. Die Übertragung von animierten 3D Daten ĂŒber bandbreitenlimitierte KanĂ€le wie ausgedehnte Netzwerke, Mobilfunk oder zu sogenannten thin clients erfordert eine effiziente Komprimierung. Die zweite, in dieser Arbeit vorgestellte Methode, ist ein Kompressionsschema fĂŒr Geometriedaten. Ähnlich wie bei der Kompression von BTF Daten wird die PCA in Verbindung mit Clustering benutzt, um die animierte Geometrie zu analysieren und in sich Ă€hnlich bewegende Teile zu segmentieren. Diese erkannten Segmente lassen sich dann hoch komprimieren. Der Algorithmus arbeitet automatisch und erlaubt zudem eine sehr exakte RekonstruktionsqualitĂ€t nach der Dekomprimierung

    Mobile Wound Assessment and 3D Modeling from a Single Image

    The prevalence of camera-enabled mobile phones have made mobile wound assessment a viable treatment option for millions of previously difficult to reach patients. We have designed a complete mobile wound assessment platform to ameliorate the many challenges related to chronic wound care. Chronic wounds and infections are the most severe, costly and fatal types of wounds, placing them at the center of mobile wound assessment. Wound physicians assess thousands of single-view wound images from all over the world, and it may be difficult to determine the location of the wound on the body, for example, if the wound is taken at close range. In our solution, end-users capture an image of the wound by taking a picture with their mobile camera. The wound image is segmented and classified using modern convolution neural networks, and is stored securely in the cloud for remote tracking. We use an interactive semi-automated approach to allow users to specify the location of the wound on the body. To accomplish this we have created, to the best our knowledge, the first 3D human surface anatomy labeling system, based off the current NYU and Anatomy Mapper labeling systems. To interactively view wounds in 3D, we have presented an efficient projective texture mapping algorithm for texturing wounds onto a 3D human anatomy model. In so doing, we have demonstrated an approach to 3D wound reconstruction that works even for a single wound image
