    Dynamic Model-based Management of Service-Oriented Infrastructure.

    Models are an effective tool for systems and software design. They allow software architects to abstract from the non-relevant details. Those qualities are also useful for the technical management of networks, systems and software, such as those that compose service oriented architectures. Models can provide a set of well-defined abstractions over the distributed heterogeneous service infrastructure that enable its automated management. We propose to use the managed system as a source of dynamically generated runtime models, and decompose management processes into a composition of model transformations. We have created an autonomic service deployment and configuration architecture that obtains, analyzes, and transforms system models to apply the required actions, while being oblivious to the low-level details. An instrumentation layer automatically builds these models and interprets the planned management actions to the system. We illustrate these concepts with a distributed service update operation

    TURTLE-P: a UML profile for the formal validation of critical and distributed systems

    The timed UML and RT-LOTOS environment, or TURTLE for short, extends UML class and activity diagrams with composition and temporal operators. TURTLE is a real-time UML profile with a formal semantics expressed in RT-LOTOS. Further, it is supported by a formal validation toolkit. This paper introduces TURTLE-P, an extended profile no longer restricted to the abstract modeling of distributed systems. Indeed, TURTLE-P addresses the concrete descriptions of communication architectures, including quality of service parameters (delay, jitter, etc.). This new profile enables co-design of hardware and software components with extended UML component and deployment diagrams. Properties of these diagrams can be evaluated and/or validated thanks to the formal semantics given in RT-LOTOS. The application of TURTLE-P is illustrated with a telecommunication satellite system

    Enabling Workflows in GridSolve: Request Sequencing and Service Trading

    International audienceGridSolve employs a RPC-based client-agent-server model for solving computational problems. There are two deficiencies associated with GridSolve when a computational problem essentially forms a workflow consisting of a sequence of tasks with data dependencies between them. First, intermediate results are always passed through the client, resulting in unnecessary data transport. Second, since the execution of each individual task is a separate RPC session, it is difficult to enable any potential parallelism among tasks. This paper presents a request sequencing technique that addresses these deficiencies and enables workflow executions. Building on the request sequencing work, one way to generate workflows is by taking higher level service requests and decomposing them into a sequence of simpler service requests using a technique called service trading. A service trading component is added to GridSolve to take advantage of the new dynamic request sequencing. The features described here include automatic DAG construction and data dependency analysis, direct interserver data transfer, parallel task execution capabilities, and a service trading component

    Web Services Discovery and Recommendation Based on Information Extraction and Symbolic Reputation

    This paper shows that the problem of web services representation is crucial and analyzes the various factors that influence on it. It presents the traditional representation of web services considering traditional textual descriptions based on the information contained in WSDL files. Unfortunately, textual web services descriptions are dirty and need significant cleaning to keep only useful information. To deal with this problem, we introduce rules based text tagging method, which allows filtering web service description to keep only significant information. A new representation based on such filtered data is then introduced. Many web services have empty descriptions. Also, we consider web services representations based on the WSDL file structure (types, attributes, etc.). Alternatively, we introduce a new representation called symbolic reputation, which is computed from relationships between web services. The impact of the use of these representations on web service discovery and recommendation is studied and discussed in the experimentation using real world web services

    Analysis and representation of test cases generated from LOTOS

    Cataloged from PDF version of article.This paper presents a method to generate, analyse and represent test cases from protocol specification. The language of temporal ordering specification (LOTOS) is mapped into an extended finite state machine (EFSM). Test cases are generated from EFSM. The generated test cases are modelled as a dependence graph. Predicate slices are used to identify infeasible test cases that must be eliminated. Redundant assignments and predicates in all the feasible test cases are removed by reducing the test case dependence graph. The reduced test case dependence graph is adapted for a local single-layer (LS) architecture. The reduced test cases for the LS architecture are enhanced to represent the tester's behaviour. The dynamic behaviour of the test cases is represented in the form of control graphs by inverting the events, assigning verdicts to the events in the enhanced dependence graph. © 1995
